Just a warning to anyone about to take neck training seriously.
    *BE CAREFUL*
I started neck training about 2 years ago and was loving the results. As someone who naturally has a narrow frame meaning my head and jawline are small, my neck being bigger really increased the way I looked from the front and gave a more masculine look, but, I ended up taking it too far, focusing on how much I can neck curl instead of how I am neck curling. The damage I ended up doing to my neck caused countless problems to my nerves and a condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia, which is often referred to as the most painful condition in the world.
I'm not trying to put anyone off neck training because it's very beneficial, and if I could go back I'd 100% do it again, but with much more caution. Stay some my dudes

Thanks for the info. People need to pay attention to potential injuries when doing any lifts that can potentially injure their spine. I speak from experience as I went from a 1100+ powerlifting score as a little guy to not even being able to do 30 bodyweight squats due to retrolisthesis and severe nerve damage that caused muscle atrophy in my left leg. Can't even run anymore because of it.

FYI Jeff, In high school I was a CIF (california) championship wrestler and the standard in that day was front and back neck bridges to build a strong neck. It will build a strong neck but you will pay the price later in life. Neck bridges compress your vertebra under load while you are moving through a full range of motion, which is something you don't want to do. Neck bridges will damage your neck vertebra. The other exercises you showed are much safer because the muscles are under load, not your vertebra . I wish we knew about them back in the day.

Best vid I've seen for neck training, well done! I began training my neck back in the 80s when I started working as a bouncer and figured a neck like Tyson or Holyfield not only looked mighty impressive, it would act like a shock absorber! A friend showed me a simple exercise that I've done ever since which works very well with no injuries which is your "basic neck curl" on this vid. At one point I was using 2 x 20 kg discs - no BS - for 10 reps on this movement, and my neck was 22"! I still use a 20 kg disc for high reps today. For the back of the neck I would simply stand, and using a rolled up towel between both hands as resistance, just lower my chin to my chest and then push back slowly, increasing resistance on every set. If you have strong triceps you can make this movement as effective as any machine. For the sides of my neck I found heavy shrugs pretty much got that covered. In four decades (fuck!) of neck training, I've never once sustained an injury - touch wood!

    • @jaybeebee9288
      @jaybeebee9288 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

Same, training since mid 80's :)
I'll go you one better...I think the neck muscles are synergists with some neighbouring bodypart, which we train the hell out of, thereby causing an imbalance that you unknowingly corrected in yourself. Usually this imbalance isn't a problem BUT, a sudden car accident could expose that issue. I have to wonder how many neck injuries outside the gym could have been prevented or hugely mitigated by enanced neck musculature...

    • @lecobra418
      @lecobra418 2 ปีที่แล้ว +89

@@shariqusoof5649 I think you shouldn't go too crazy right off the start, listen to yourself, neck is a pretty sensitive area and you shouldn't rush anything because it's really easy to hurt yourself. So, I think you should stick to it as long as you feel you're improving and when you feel you doesn't improve anymore, when you feel it just not enough then add another exercice. Be careful with plates, I once hurt my neck doing an exercise with a 10kg plate and a head harness, nothing serious but it could've been serious so be really progressive about those muscles in particular.

    Dynamic Warm Up:
2:50 8-10 head rotations, alternating directions
2:56 lie down on bench and do 10-12 slow bodyweight neck curls
3:04 flip to side, 10-12 lateral curls per side
3:06 lie facing down on bench, 10-12 neck extensions
3:22 side to side stretching for 5 seconds or so
3:26 neck curls with touching your chin to your shoulders, alternating side from rep to rep (just jump to the timestamp tbh)
3:40 side to side rotations with isometric hold
    Actual Routine:
4:02 neck curl, curl legs in under bench to prevent cheating. around 10-20+ reps
5:42 neck extension, head harness strongly recommended. Full ROM as always, don't hyperextend above parallel
7:55 neck bridges. bit redundant if already doing all the other stuff

    Tl;Dw:

    DUDE!
I have been dealing with neck problems for years. I'm 52 years old and started having back issues at 16 and neck issues about 10 years later. Its hereditary/genetic. For the past umteenth number of years I've been getting cortisone injections from a pain clinic physician, on both sides of my cervical vertebrae to treat the pain and inflammation and do this every 4-6 months.
I came across this video by accident. I began doing the stretches and exercises you recommend in this video and even after the first time, my neck has started to feel better. What you demonstrate seems so obvious as to the benefits of training the neck for athletes, but i have always avoided doing anything like this to treat the neck pain for fear that I'd injure myself and make the pain even worse. The key here is to properly stretch and start off slowly and build the weight up gradually over time, like any exercise.
I can't thank you enough for doing this video. I feel as though a weight has been lifted off my shoulders (no pun intended). Its very selfless of you to do this and I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart. You're awesome!
Now with that out of the way, i need to ask you if this will improve my golf game? LOL.
--Be well and again thank you!

From a physical therapist's perspective, especially of you are strengthening your neck for pain, I'd suggest adding in deep cervical flexion strengthening in addition to global cervical flexion (which focuses move on superficial muscles.) Focus the movement on tucking the chin and nodding the head move than taking the head forwards. These muscles are a akin to the rotator cuff of the shoulder by providing stability to the neck.

1:30 This is especially apparent with race drivers, and especially Formula One Drivers. Because the cars have so much downforce they can go through turns really quickly, making for up to 5Gs trying to push the drivers head off his neck in turns or when braking, which is why these drivers do a lot of neck training.
At the same time drivers want to be as light as possible, because every kilo you don't have to carry makes the race car a little bit faster. This leads to drivers being relatively skinny with huge necks at the same time. You can't unsee it once you know it. :D

Just as a tip, for anyone who doesn’t want to wear a special Ed helmet for those neck exercises, resistance bands work just as well. Just keep your hands touching your head (like you do when doing a sit up) to keep the band in place or else working too heavy may cause the band to slip off your head and either smack somebody near you or slide down to your neck and suddenly your asphyxiating yourself

People are here because they want big necks, it doesn’t have to be about aesthetic. Personally, I came here because in martial arts if you have a stronger neck you will be less likely to get a concussion from a powerful punch.

I use the lying hamstring curl bench. I reverse position, lying face down to the rear, slip my head under the padded bar (where your legs normally go) and with palms on the floor, simply raise my head for reps. Try it, works great.
