I find it funny how critics found the film too childish with no respect for kids’ intellect, yet there’s a ton of dark content throughout it. The main character almost dies from blood loss during the final act and the shark eats 6 characters on-screen.
Joe may have failed and perished as a villain, but he'll forever be remembered as the patron deity and savior of fishkind who brought order and civilization to the sea.

If it didn't, then as soon as the fish Joe had given the potion to were dead everything would go back to the way it was before. Have you ever seen We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story (1993)? There's also a lot of simillar vibes to that with this. Professor MacKrill is kinda like Captain Neweyes and Professor Screweyes. Some who know both the films say he's the lost brother of the Eye brothers. He's an invetor who can make living organisms become inteligent with creative formulas. Also, Louie (the boy character of We're Back) is like Fly with the hair and cap. But he's dark haired and cool/tough looking. Fly is supposed to be the same kinda looking boy trope.

What I find the craziest thing about this movie (besides the entire idea of turning people into sea animals and the entire thing with the fascist fish) is the fact that in the end there is still an entire civillisation of intelligent sea creatures, who might even be able to have intelligent offspring and might survive the infighting after Joes demise... But maybe I am thinking all to much about the implications inside of a childrens movie.
I loved thos film as a child except the drowning scene, but I never realised it was Alan rickman who played joe, and I love the aesthetic of using the ships engines gor the songs staging just adds to the feel and the movement emphasised some of the beats of the song
