  • Forage and Cook - Find Free Food On the Beach (Seaweed and Limpets) | Fishing Chef
    Skunked! or not? ha
    I was still able to fix myself a healthy nutritional lunch without catching any fishes or crabs.
    There are a lot of edibles near the shore, beach, and jetty. Please practice sustainable harvest/foraging.
    Seaweed is "low in Saturated Fat, and very low in Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Vitamin K, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid and Phosphorus, and a very good source of Riboflavin, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Copper and Manganese."- Google.
    Limpets - recipes.wikia.c... a great edible sources of food(protein)
    Note: the way i pry the limpets off the rocks were not legal, i can only use my hands to pick them up. So if you ever wanted to get limpets please try to do it with your hands.

    My GF just told me this video reminded her of one of our first dates...eels, crab, and making Udon on the beach! Love those Owl Limpets!

    • @FishingChef
      @FishingChef  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOLL this kind of dates are a little unusual but nevertheless i think it is one of most memorable! yea too bad i found out later that we can't use knife to take limpets anymore, it has to be done with a line, hook, or your hand lol

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FishingChef WHAT? OK by hand I get, as limpets are hemophiliacs (like abalone), and if cut, they will die. But by hook and line? That makes no sense at all lol! And yeah, on that date weekend my GF and I caught eel, crab, dug clams, and cooked two full days over the open fire. It was great!

    Limpets are a delicacy in Hawaii too. The Hawaiian limpet or 'opihi is most commonly eaten raw usually seasoned with some sea salt and garnished with roasted candlenut and Hawaiian seaweed with a splash of Hawaiian chili pepper water.

    Limpets are best prepared with minimal cooking. Until the release from the shell
    Prepare upside down on the coals. When you see small bubbles from the shell edge. Don’t eat the poop sack (black ball in the back of the shell)
    Or won’t do you any harm it’s just bitter and gritty. Some off flavours

    Another easy way to cook limpets... Afix limpets to a rock suitable for the fire. Place rocks deep on hot coals... Limpets cook on rock.... Yeah, pinch the sack off... You only eat the muscle 👍

    Try cooking up the limpets on the grill. Just top w/ a butter, chopped garlic and salt. They roast in their own liquids.
    Makes great bbq!

    Great video! Fyi, you can only catch limpets by hand or with a hook and line (that second rule doesn't make sense at all, but it has more to do with octopus and squid being classified as mollusks too). I love grilling limpets over a fire until they're nice and smoky and squeezing a good bit of lemon on them. So delicious ☺

    • @FishingChef
      @FishingChef  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you for the tips! i wonder how we ever going to catch limpets with hands though.. do you know the secret, if you do, do you mind sharing it with me :D

    • @jocelynnguyen333
      @jocelynnguyen333 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fishing Chef I've actually been able to hand catch limpets that are on relatively smooth, flat rocks. If you can position your thumbs close to the shell and shove real hard before they notice you and clamp down, you can push them right off the rock. Unfortunately limpets are kind of hard to surprise 😂. The other method is basically get a gigantic sturdy fish hook, put enough heavy line through the hole to wrap around your hand, and sneakily get the point of the hook under the edge of the limpet shell (here, you need the element of surprise at first as well) and just yank the line. Should pull the limpet right off the rock. Hope that helps! Limpets make a great substitute for clams in chowder, btw. If you want to check out some of my foodt/foraging/cooking stuff (including the grilled limpets) I'm on Instagram @foodvivant 🙂

    Here in Hawaii we call the limpets Opihi. They are like GOLD here. We primarily eat them raw. If you're ever in Hawaii hit me up and I'll show you the many ways we eat them.

    the shrimp you caught and the limpets are good bait also for rockfish ;) on the pole
    limpets you can scoop out of the shell like a scallop....i think they have a stomach you want to remove from 80% of it called the "foot"....yea that green bit is the stomach....did you call the biotoxin line before eating them? :o

    Dont let a game warden see you using a knife man. Supposed to be taken without tools. Just grab and twist as fast as you can before they vacuum seal themselves to the rock. Enjoy.

    Hi fishing chef! great new video, you're really putting a lot of effort into this! It's called "foraging", not "forging". forge means to make something. also, I don't like eating limpets at all, people in Hawaii love it. These are called owl limpets, they're pretty closely related to abalone.

    • @FishingChef
      @FishingChef  6 ปีที่แล้ว
