in Hawaii they are called Opihi. another Hawaiian delicacy consumed raw. they tend to populate in rough waters where its hard and very dangerous to harvest off the rocks where waves are crashing all around. consumed whenever its available. highly prized for special occasions. weddings, a baby's first birthday, any special celebration. The yellow variety is call Black Gold. highly prized. they can fetch, with shells on, $50-$60 a lb.

We eat these here in Hawaii too. We call um opihi (oh-pee-hee) however most times the center point of the shell is sharp rather than smooth. Especially for the ones that libe near rough waters. Grilling them is very good but we eat them raw just like gordon ramsay did. Or marinated in kimchee base. They go for about $23.99/lb last I checked, the reason why the price is so high because it’s dangerous to harvest. Several people die yearly in an attempt to pry them off rocks.
