Correction: Kamiyama did not direct Jin Roh nor Blood+. Jin Roh was directed by Hiroyuki Okiura (legendary animator) and Blood+ he helped with the script.
Came in to correct this as well, as I'm a huge fan of Jin-Roh and got unduly excited before I double checked the name. I would love to see Okiura direct another feature film--it's been well over ten years already since his more family friendly A Letter to Momo. As for Kamiyama, I think the confusion came from Kamiyama being either a unit director or an animation director on Jin-Roh (both are listed in different parts of his wikipedia entry). He also directed the seemingly forgotten Napping Princess (I don't hear anybody talking about that film) and created/directed the Eden of the East series, among other things.
This is 100% spot on. CGI can only go so far to bring to life the universe Tolkien created. Animation just opens up the possibilities of adaptation closer to the source material because it's not bogged down by relating it to what's in the "real" world. Plus it's cheaper and that's a factor that'll always be relevant to studios making movies.
@@Scema12 Sure it did, because it had the budget to make live action work. Though that medium has its limits when it comes to adapting his stories in other books.
I'd love to know what Chris Stuckmann thinks of Look Back if he hasn't already seen it. Another really great anime movie from this year that more people should see.
This film captured my heart with its integrity and deep respect for Tolkien's universe. It’s clear that everyone involved-the writers, directors, and cast-genuinely cared about this project, and their effort shines through. Helm Hammerhand and his sons are portrayed as fully fleshed-out characters, complete with flaws and strengths, making them compelling and relatable. Hera herself reminds me of Éowyn, and while powerful, she’s no more overpowered than someone like Aragorn or other iconic Tolkien heroes. The story expands on the history of Helm's Deep beautifully, while also introducing us to fascinating interpretations of Tolkien’s creatures and lore, including the Eagles, the Mûmakil, and the Watcher in the Water. The music is absolutely stellar, evoking the grandeur of Howard Shore’s compositions from Peter Jackson's films, and the animation-reminiscent of Attack on Titan-was visually striking and engaging throughout. As someone who has been a Tolkien fan for over 40 years, having first read The Fellowship of the Ring at 15, I find much of the criticism disheartening. Many seem fixated on political grievances, deriding the film for featuring a female protagonist and tossing around terms like "Mary Sue" or "girl boss" without substance. Worse yet, a large portion of this backlash appears to come from people who haven’t even watched the film. Complaints about the film being “unnecessary” are equally flimsy. If Rogue One, a beloved Star Wars film, could spring from a single line in A New Hope, why can’t we have an equally enriching exploration of Helm Hammerhand’s story? And as for criticisms about the runtime of 2 hours and 15 minutes-it’s baffling, considering how many of us happily binge 8 to 10 hours of a streaming series in one sitting.
I agree that the term ‘Mary Sue’ is overused and pointless because it feels like it is only used to look down on female protagonists. Héra is in NO WAY a Mary Sue. From a writing standpoint her role in the story is earned and she’s a good fleshed-out character.
I'm not an anime fan, but I am a LOTR fan, and that's what got me through the theater doors. It was a bummer when I found out it was a cartoon, but I got over it quick. Great movie!
My first VHS tape rental was *The Last Unicorn* in 1983, rented from a home stereo store. It was an $80 dollar deposit ($255 dollars in today's money) for a 1 Night rental lol. I believe this film was Americas first anime.
Just came out of a Dolby Cinema viewing and wow I was blown away by the visuals and the sound. The story was solid and I was entertained the whole time! I’m a LOTR movie fan and a casual anime fan, so I took a leap of faith, and I’m glad I did!
1. Please drop the Better Help sponsorship if you can 2. The marketing for the movie is absolutely abysmal, no wonder it's projected to only make at MOST $25 million 3. As someone who watched an early screening, your enjoyment of the movie is really going to depend on what you want from it. If you want an enjoyable popcorn flick that gives you some fun memories about the original trilogy? You'll enjoy it. If you want a fleshed-out exploration of a really cool story from the appendices, and you really wanted something as faithful and compelling as the original trilogy (not 100% faithful, but as faithful)? Then you'll be disappointed like I was, unfortunately
Thanks man I was looking for insight like this, I was going to watch it for Helm Hammerhand but since it's anime I'm a bit less interested and if the story puts Helm Hammerhand in the background then I won't be interested
I'm more of a LOTR fan than an anime fan, but for what this was and how quickly it was thrown together, I thought it was pretty good. I don't think I'll be coming back to this one as much as the original trilogy, but I'm glad I saw it and hope that audiences give this one a shot.
I remember that the narration said that there's is no records of her, so don't search for her story because there is none, what? so they made the fk up? ok nevermind that, I hope that they animate their jaw better when they are talking, and should have show us more tears, it is as if they have no tear glands or not allowed to cry , just show us more emotions that they are too vulnerable yet staying strong .
I agree. In lore, Helm does have a daughter but her name was forgotten. The story’s point is that war is not glorious but tragic. Even some heroes are forgotten and left nameless in history’s records. I’m also glad that the film made both sides of the war complex and smart.
Please go see Flow instead far better movie and actually get to support a great original movie!!! This movie misses the entire point of the lord of the rings. Lord of the rings is about flawed people coming together to overcome their flaws. it shows humanity can do great things only by being together. This movie is just about one person who succeeds by herself and is entirely perfect at the beginning of the film. She never learns or grows just is perfect which literally misses the entire point of lord of the rings. Imagine Frodo making the entire journey to destroy the ring by himself, never being tempted never once struggling with the pull of the ring. or imagine Aragon soloing all the orcs and monsters and destroys entire armies by himself without the assistance of the ghost army or legolas or the rest of the fellowship. These scenarios are literally the plot of this film, one perfect character succeding all by herself. Please go see Flow instead far better movie and actually get to support a great original movie!!!

The last Kenji Kamiyama anime that I watched is GitS SAC 2045, and I would say that it was way below my expectation since I'm a fan of his previous two seasons of SAC, I hope this movie brings his reputation back up
i love lord of the rings, read everything there is to read about tokiens world and i cant believe that they still went with a character, that has no solid background whatsoever. Never again shall we get something special like the lotr trilogy. I have no confidence P. Jackson is going to deliver with the hunt for gollum aswell. They are trying so hard to appeal to everyone, that they forgot about their actual fans. So be it - for me, this was the last time i payed to watch a tolkienverse movie. What an embarassing movie about really nothing. The main characters are sidelined. Everyone is incompetent beside Hera and the shieldmaid, whateverthefuckhername was. Here i thought WB would show amazon how to make a proper tolkienverse film, how wrong i was. Now it's just a contest of which dump is less shitty.
WB thought they could write a better story than Tolkien himself what a shame to his legacy. Like you I’m not wasting money on any more “adaptations”. Animation was something that makes the most sense when to adapting middle earth but what a flop.

This. Just watched the movie and I thought it was good. But the issue was that the relationship between the princess and the villain was underdeveloped on both ends. We never get a good glimpse on how she felt the friendship was or why they never reunited till now. As for the villain, he seemed to be way too insane for wanting to kill what he claimed was a girl he loved. I get the father dying could make him be vengeful, but the film treats it like he's practically possessed by the One Ring in terms of how one note evil he became. For how long the film was, I wish they added more detail to the backstory so the events of the film feel more tragic.

An anime version of Middle Earth feels so weird. The fact that Tolkien wouldn't even know the medium existed and comes from such a different culture and time creates such an interesting juxtaposition for me. Not inherently good or bad, just weird.
Animated Lord of the Rings came out in 70s. It was the only version available on film until 2000. It was not anime, but it was a decent animated movie for it's time.
I really enjoyed it overall BUT…. Biggest hole ever in a movie When they are stuck in the castle and surrounded and the baddies are building the tower thing ….. Why didn’t anyone from the castle fire a fire lit arrow or two to burn it down and stop them getting in ???
someone did fire an arrow from the keep while they were building the tower, but they were building it far enough from the wall that it would be out of reach for their bows
One person shot an arrow, but it wasn’t on fire, nor was it aimed at the tower-it just hit the ground. Did no one stop to think, “Hey, if we shoot a few fire arrows at the tower, it might actually go down”? OR BETTER YET why didn't they throw the fire ball thing at the fricking tower to begin with??
Idk man....whether this film is good or not it just feels kinda weird having a LoTR movie done in anime style. It just feels like something else entirely when i see it.
Because the trailer started with the Live action stuff, I always just wrote it off as some cash grab "Now streaming on Peacock" or something. I had no idea this was a whole new animated film. That's a huge failure in marketing when most "ads" can be skipped in 5 seconds

It truly does not seem anymore that he gives a fuck about the shit he's shoveling to his audience... Just putting MASSIVE chunks of adverts no one is interested in. Ive no doubt he won't see it because he has 0 activity in comments anymore either but until he stops with these ridiculous ads deals and 2 min long ads and starts listening and perhaps responding to his audience.... I've lost any and all interest in clicking on another one of his ads with an after thought review tied to the end. Massive shame to see what this channel has become ...
This will come as a shock to you but comments don't represent the majority of viewers...Most of us don't care that 2 years ago a youtuber said "BETTER HELP BAD" with no proof and you gullible lot believed it, most of us just watch the review and live our lives without being in this fantasy world of "we gotta tell Chris this thing bad" like you're sort of hero.
Happy Christmas, Chris! I'm looking forward to your review of Kraven the Hunter. The new Lord of the Rings animated film looks good. They could do an animated Game of Thrones movie for the big screen.
Does this animation quality look more like a movie for a running series than a made for cinema feature to anyone else? It contains a lot of the flaws and technical limitations that I see for TV anime and their movies, like the Demon Slayer movie, such as 3D backgrounds not perfectly matching the pace of the character models, rotating shots that don't completely line up. When I can tell the animation layers apart and pick out what is 3D and 2D at a glance I consider it a flaw.
Honestly, I don't really care about that considering the constraints and timelines they are working with. It's a limitation of the procedure. What matters most to me with CGI in anime is that the CGI looks good. I don't care if I can tell it is CGI as long as it is not bad CGI. What a lot of animes suffer from is not CGI, but bad CGI. Using crappy models and animations for monsters or even characters during action scenes. Despite the fact that Ufotable's CGI sticks out like a sore thumb, at least it still looks good. Take Muzan shattering all of the glass scene. Yeah, everyone and their mother's mother knew that shit was CGI. But it was still satisfying to watch. Girls Und Panzer has good CGI because the CGI is used to retain the detail and physics of the tanks while also providing a 3D scene to fly the camera around. It is not used simply to cut corners. When CGI is used in anime, it shouldn't be used to cover up weaknesses, but rather play to its strengths. CGI can retain details. CGI can give more information like generated lighting. It can also be used to enhance the 2D animation. Ufotable does this, but outside of the obvious, Fafner the Beyond also does this quite successfully and there are more.
See this seems to be the dividing line for a lot of people. Having seen now a lot of reviews for this movie I am seeing the good/bad reviews fall on either side of 'Do you know Tolkien's work, yes/no'. If yes then you will probably not like this movie as they take a character, a female character at that, so small and insignificant that Tolkien never named her and base the entire movie around her. However if you don't know the lore and aren't a fan then people seem to love it because, well, they don't know what is pissing off the fans, lol. Now that doesn't mean some fans won't like it and some non-fans won't hate it, of course there are both on either side. I am simply saying from what I have seen, heard and read this seems to be how the reviews are falling. Which brings up a question. Why make a movie set in the LotR's universe that the fans might not enjoy? Why take that risk? These movies are NOT cheap to make, so why not simply base it all around Helm, the character the fans love? It will make no difference to the non-fans, but it does make a huge difference to the fans.
Well, my two cents, as a lifelong enjoyer of Tolkien's work since I first read The Hobbit back in the 80s, is that I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I think I saw some "choppy" animations here and there (maybe it was rushed to theaters, I don't know), but overall it was a quality movie. I know lore deviations to create a more condense story are common, and in some cases, necessary. And also, as a fully developed adult with a functioning brain, I know that those deviations (of a fantasy world, as in "not real") don't magically erase the original writings. As for the people that think that any alteration of Tolkien's work, no matter how big or small, it's heresy, let me tell you that they don't represent Tolkien's fans. At all. Any other person that I know of, that we share the same interests, has been able to enjoy the movie for what it is. I personally would not give any credit to people on the Internet that claims to be a "Tolkien Scholar" and only spits hateful comments about everything (except for the Peter Jackson movies, apparently those were perfect in every way and didn't commit any lore deviations at all... gotta love those cherrypickers).
Honestly, I haven't seen the film yet, but I have a feeling these "fans" you speak of are just the usual close-minded mysoginist whiners who no one is trying to appeal to anyways. You know, the ones who turn their backs on Rings of Power for reasons as superficial as black elves and too many badass female characters
@@hectorrodriguez9382 LOL, I have come across many a 'fan' who would crucify Jackson due to giving Arwen more screen time (he did that to land Liv Tyler for the role supposedly) or having the elves arrive at Helms Deep ... actually I have to agree with them on that one, it took away the bravery of the men as they had the elf backup and it served no purpose that I could see. I first read The Hobbit and the LotR's when I was 10/11 back in the late 70's and have been a huge fan since. I have even read the Silmarillion which is a hard slog even for a dedicated fan let me tell you:) I love Jacksons LotR's movies with a passion, can take or leave the Hobbit as they stretched it out to oblivion over three movies and diluted the plot. That all said I tried Amazons Rings of Power and hate it. And I hardly ever use that 'H' word, but I do, they bastardised the lore by cherry picking names, places and condensing hundreds, if not thousands of years down to months when there were easy, far more interesting and explained parts of the history Tolkien wrote about. This particular movie? If I didn't know the history I would probably be ok with it, though not a huge Anime fan I'm afraid, never liked that style of animation. But, my question remains that I set up above. Why make it set around a female that no one ever heard of? Why not set Helm up as the focus? As far as I can see there is no reason other than politics.
@@Utaeru I have to disagree here, and I am not a misogynist by any stretch, but even I can see when they pander to politics to tick off points on their score cards. Since when has being true to the written word you are adapting become so sacrilegious? Why do fans who have enjoyed and followed works of fiction for decades get labelled as bigots, racist, misogynist simply for asking that a beloved piece or art is faithfully adapted? It costs Hollywood no more to do it right than to do it wrong, so why not stay faithful and do it right by the fans?
I know Tolkien’s work, and I read the couple of pages the movie is adapted from just minutes before going to the cinema. The movie stays true to the story in tone, and all the major elements and characters are present. It’s quite faithful, especially considering how much they had to expand to fill a two-hour runtime. Clearly, the main issue people have is the fact that the protagonist is a female warrior (even though this doesn’t particularly contradict Tolkien’s lore). Helm is not sidelined in any way-he plays a significant role until *spoilers* his eventual demise, and Fréalaf is also present throughout most of the film.
I'll watch it when it comes to streaming, but I do not like the esthetic of most anime. Just not my bag. However, I'm a huge LOTR fan, so I'll give it a go.
See, this is why this movie channel remains leagues better than the ones who seem to solely exist to whine endlessly about cinema. I didn't even know this production existed... NOW THAT SHOULD BE THE WHOLE POINT of such a channel - making you discover good movies you never heard of, not reinforcing your bias against films YOU ALREADY KNOW are going to suck or post in every two videos that Disney is done! Yes, I miss the Hilariocity too... but a little bit less Prime Stuckmann is still better than the alternatives.

Right..
I agree that the term ‘Mary Sue’ is overused and pointless because it feels like it is only used to look down on female protagonists. Héra is in NO WAY a Mary Sue. From a writing standpoint her role in the story is earned and she’s a good fleshed-out character.

I agree. In lore, Helm does have a daughter but her name was forgotten. The story’s point is that war is not glorious but tragic. Even some heroes are forgotten and left nameless in history’s records. I’m also glad that the film made both sides of the war complex and smart.

Imagine Frodo making the entire journey to destroy the ring by himself, never being tempted never once struggling with the pull of the ring.
or
imagine Aragon soloing all the orcs and monsters and destroys entire armies by himself without the assistance of the ghost army or legolas or the rest of the fellowship.
These scenarios are literally the plot of this film, one perfect character succeding all by herself.

i love lord of the rings, read everything there is to read about tokiens world and i cant believe that they still went with a character, that has no solid background whatsoever.
I just left the theater, you are being way over dramatic. The movie was actually pretty good.
Chris should review Terminator Zero, the Netflix anime based on the Terminator that was actually really good.

Hey Chris! Are you going to review the Ranma 1/2 remake? I know it’s a tv series, but I feel it would be right up your alley!
4:50 By deep backstory you mean a one minute flashback, LoL.
No, their backstory isn't set up well. We know they were childhood friends and that's about it.
This is controversial but I only seen lord of the rings when I was a kid and I don’t remember much but I want to go for this movie. Would you suggest it as someone who doesn’t know the lore or story ?

Just watch the damn anime. Sheesh.
Had no idea this movie existed till I came upon this recommendation
I did
See this seems to be the dividing line for a lot of people.
Bro reviewed this and not Look Back. Look Back deserves all of the attention it can get, especially for awards season

Agreed. Chris has highlighted a bunch of new films this year that I’ve never heard of at all. Plus after reviewing nearly everything for over a decade, I get him not wanting to be negative about film anymore. And it’s pretty easy to figure out if there’s a movie he doesn’t like, he simply does not make a review for it.
This comment should be pinned!
Exactly, no need to milk stuff he doesn’t like for the sake of views, mans got a family and a career beyond TH-cam. If people want to hear someone whine and complain with surface level takes that reinforce their bias before seeing a movie go watch the countless grifters.
Which is why he should really review Look Back.
@@smolchibi7128 I'm actually surprised he didn't do so. Maybe it's not playing in his town? It's not playing in mine.
Nah this movie is not even that good. Nowadays I can tell if a movie is really bad if Chris begs the audience to see it at the movie theaters. If a movie were really good you wouldnt need to beg nobody bro
