I've used this bag for multiple week travel, and it has held up very well. Regarding the zippers- my bag has rings attaching the pull tabs to the zipper, I lock the zippers together using these rings. Regarding the large front pocket with magnetic closure, i store a light jacket or other smaller bag in the pocket. I clip the small bag to one of the attachment points. I wish the pocket had a more secure closure, but my small bag has not slipped out, and if it did, it would be connected to the attachment point. I really like this bag, and the 30L size is plenty of space for multi-week trips, and the organization works well for me. As others have pointed out, I too think the obsession with YKK zippers is a bit much. The zippers on this bag are a very good quality and have not given me any issues at all. Overall, it was a good review. Thank you.
As a traveler in AERs travel pack 2 and pack 3 small (one to 4 months at a time) have you had issues with this fully loaded out and the straps not being comfy? My friends have with this bag have commented about this.
@@KurtRWalkermy wife and I recently returned from a 2 week trip to Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon. We both only carried our 30L Peak Design bags. The bags were fully loaded with everything we needed for our trip. We did walk a fair distance with the bags and neither of us complained about the shoulder straps. We both have the add on hip belt. We still really like our bags a lot.
9:10, I think the reason for the strap stowaway is also to make it easier (especially when flying) to slide in/out under the seat in front of you. Backpack straps tend to snag on things when stowing away/pulling out from under seats or any tight space.
FYI, this bag also works perfectly vertically on wheely suitcase carry on, with handle height slightly taller than the travel backpack. The top loop is super wide and sturdy and holds it in place, working great also as a luggage pass through, and you also have the adjustable straps you can mount to the bottom fastening points if you really need to secure it to your wheelie handle, although basic testing from me seems it's not needed.
Much more detailed review than others out right now. Thank you for covering details that aren't clear from the promo descriptions! I like that it's a smaller size and that the strap hardware is stronger, but doing away with side access means this is a no for me.
Great review as always. Thank you! Looks like they've basically combined the 45L travel bag with aspects of the Everyday Bag V2; the back panel has the straps and logistics of the everyday bag. To your point about them leaving a ton of room around the spine to store the straps, this will also help store the hip straps. I have the hip straps on my Everyday bag, and seems like they would store very comfortably along with the shoulder straps on this bag. Also, the outside pocket for the Attachment straps might be a big as it is in order to accommodate the PD rain fly. I know you can do that on the 45L, but the pocket still seems pretty big even considering that option lol.
From an aesthetics point of view this bag is beautiful, but after using a synik 22 for a couple years, the Peak30's lack of on-the-go accessibility is a huge blunder (to me at least). It doesn't seem like it would convert quickly to a daily carry from a travel bag to a daily carry and vis versa really well. It also seems a big heavy for a bag that just has 2 pockets to weigh in over 3lbs
Great review. Strap storage on the 45L (and this bag) are great for airline carryon where loose straps tend to get caught up on everything either under the seat or in the bins above your head as you load & unload, as well as carry the bag down the aisle. My only wish is that PD would provide a couple simple snaps on the flaps to help keep them closed a bit better. The magnets they use are good, but not as strong at keeping the flaps closed as good snaps would be. Of note... The new 30L also lacks the dual sided access to the main compartment the 45L has, so gaining access to the internal storage pockets is far less optimal. You have to (re)move the contents of the main compartment to get to them. It also lacks the side access flaps, used mainly to gain access to the camera cubes. A decent bag if you need something smaller, but I'll stick with my 45L and use of the camera cubes I love. I might have gone for it had I not picked up the 35L duffle I use for non-photography trip use.
Yes, finally it has happened! I have been waiting and waiting for them to make a smaller version of the 45L travel backpack. It is my Favorite bag and finally can have it as a travel bag and a camera bag. Thank you!
Something about those blocked inside mesh pockets is really unsettling. Just imagine taking the bag off, setting it down on the ground face-down (which by itself bothers me), unzipping the huge main compartment, carefully heaving open the flap containing your 2kg macbook and resting that on the ground, pulling out whatever's blocking that compartment and either balancing it on the sloping laptop flap or setting it on the ground too (best case this is a single packing cube, more likely a several smaller things), getting your thing and then doing it all in reverse.
Agree with this. Disappointing the front pocket is small. I thought it was like the 45L (which I have and love) and was expecting the full length of the front and also front access to the mesh pockets. Have neither of those makes this a no-go for airplane travel.
I like it, but I am very sorry that it is not very much aimed at transporting photographic equipment. in particular I would have liked a side opening, and new inner bags smaller than the current ones. It would have been the perfect bag for traveling with mirrorless cameras. I have the 45L and I will definitely keep that even if it is too big
Hey Alessandro-have you checked out Peak Design's camera cubes that integrate into the bag? Although the access isn't as quick as their Everyday line, it travels well with a mirrorless. - Tom
Just got back from a two day trip and was excited to get home to try out the limited edition which came in the mail today. I'm be comparing the bag I used on my trip (a packed-to-the-gills Ranger Green GR1 26L). Was excited to get a new travel bag that would hold more of my stuff more comfortably. I'm very disappointed. Imagine my dismay when I found that it holds the same amount with no extra space as my GR1 26L. Either the GORUCK folks underestimate the capacity or PD oversold the capacity. The accessory strap storage is a waste, and I would have preferred using that space for a right side up external pocket. The GR1 actually has a better design for the laptop compartment than this one, as the GR1 does not require you to open the main compartment to get your laptop. This one does. And there is no side access, which would have been convenient and is a feature that some Mystery Ranch packs have. GR1 also has some nice expandability and versatility with the interior and exterior PALS channels to mount accessories like admin pouches, dump pouches for DIY water bottle pouches, and hip belts. Overall, it is a solid pack for those who have not experienced the little things that make some packs head and shoulders above this one. But for me, a bag fiend who knows what I want, this is going back.
Looks nice. happy that they have something that can easily fit under the seat and can be used with a roller bag. The two section design reminds of my Goruck GR2. Miss those side pockets though for camera gear. Without them, this is kind of a boring bag.
Agree with your comments on the harder to access areas that could be used for Tech. To me, that is what makes the Able Carry Max better. I am still trying to truly compare the two.
i really dig this. have the everyday zip 20l for my daily use for work and so on. really love the peak design products and this would be awesome for short trips also via plane... damn it
I feel like it's a huge misses opportunity to not make that big front pocket closeable with a clip or something, rather than just magnets. You really could throw something like a jacket or a wet towel or some larger laundry in there, to keep away from the rest of your stuff, and with "drainage" possibilities since the pocket is inverted, if you really would want that. With a clip, it'd stay secure in there.
Looks like you could put a lock through the circular metal bits of the zipper pulls pretty easily. Then hopefully there's some part of the bag you can anchor the lock to for extra security.
Considering they're all about transporting photography equipment PD does not seem to care about locking down their bags. It bugs me too. At least this one doesn't have the side access but I still want dedicated YKK lockable pulls.
This obsession over YKK zippers is a bit much. While YKK are generally good quality, they are not universally so. Unless you can prove that the zippers they are using are actually inferior, I don't think they should be constantly represented as a failing of the bag.
It's not specifically a failing if it's not YKK, but you kinda know what to expect from YKK zippers. When other zippers are used, you may not know how durable or smooth they are. For me, I am just unfamiliar with how good or bad most other brands of zips are.
Wow I’ve watched many videos on this bag but none are as detailed as yours. However, I would really like to know if there’s any quick access to the laptop compartment? For going through the x ray. Thank you.
Great review. How much weight can those straps take, given that they're not box-stitched into place? I regularly carry 15kg of weight in my work backpack (laptops and other gear), and VERY few bags can handle it without mechanically failing within a year, or having the straps disintegrate. Will this take that without breaking down?
Agreed! I love the look compared to the Aer backpack, but I’m leaning more towards the aer because I like that we don’t have to open everything to get to the little items
Does this compress at all? A budget airline I frequently use lets carry on of 45 x 36 x 20cm and I appreciate Peak Design note this is in standard is 53 x 34 x 18cm, do you think you can get away with this?
I wish you could pack the wndrd provoke down like this - I also wish they were like this and not so utilitarian. Almost perfect camera bag killed by those straps in my opinion, why I’m even looking at Peak Design again.
Great review! . Would you recommend this bag as a EDC bag? Not sure which to pick, this or Civic Half Zip 26L. Would be really happy if you could help me. Tnx
Hey Kaneshiro! This is definitely a less camera-focused bag than the 45L version. It can only fit the PD camera cubes when expanded, according to their site. - Austin
Is it just me or did you forget the front smaller zippers to access the charger, notebook etc from front? Or those are ONLY accessible through inside of backpack large compartment?
Too bad its not the smaller version of the 45L. I am not a tall person and could have use this smaller version. My 45L in the compressed 30L version I use as my carry-on travel luggage and I appreciate the deep front pockets, side openings, waist belt, and the ability to unzip the front mess pockets to access the main compartment without having the front of the bag facing down...
Misses the mark for we with the wasted space for access straps being upside down and the magnet not very secure, the quick access front pocket is a joke, the camera cubes wont work unless its fully expanded, and the zipper locking function just doesnt look like its worth the trouble. No side access pocket when its on rolling luggage either. Beautiful to look at though.
Can the inside mesh pockets only be accessed when opened fully? Or can you reach your hand in there with it slightly opened the bottom of the bag on the floor?
Hey there! You could probably reach your hand in there, but it would be a challenge. You'd be reaching in blind, so it would take some practice, and your other items might be in the way. - Austin
The bag is 3” too tall for budget airlines. It probably would fit under the seat but if you have it fully packed I think it would be hard to fit in the sizer.
With each generation of PD, the disappointment is bigger and bigger. With v2, they have removed many of nice accents (especially the all-black version plus Tote packs v2 are really not a pleasant design). This back just looks more like a daily ZIP backpack, no snaps for the compression, no side access, it really is a different bag to its 45L sibling.
They should have a hook or some Velcro or something in the top of that pocket then to attach to it so it doesn't fall out in transit. As Tom said, that magnet doesn't seem v secure
@@susie9893 The Rainfly comes with two straps that lock around the two bottom attachment points that you can see being used by Tom at 13:42 They are specifically made like that, so you can pull out the pouch with the rainfly, unfold it, and drape it over the bag without having to loosen those two straps. Even in the windiest conditions the rainfly won't fly away, if the wind somehow catches it. The rainfly however was designed for the 45L version and other bigger bags that they have. It might be slightly too big for this one, although you can sinch it down a bit.
@@PackHacker2By any chance, do you remember if it was expanded or compressed? Thanks! But this gives me hope that I made a good decision by ordering one for Black Friday.
Hey there! Yes, the extra length in the zipper pulls is there as a theft deterrent. If you go back a little further, you can see the whole process. - Austin th-cam.com/video/giCVE_Jz_0U/w-d-xo.html
They should’ve had like a snap or something so that when you fold the straps underneath on the backside they can’t just pop out randomly. It could’ve been magnets or anything but you just don’t have the confidence that they’re not gonna come out. This point it definitely was not the peak of design language. If it had been peak design they would’ve thought of that and fixed it.
If it’s hot, the back panel will probably get a bit warm. The back panel is raised and has some aeration, so that helps! See the full review for more information about the pack: packhacker.com/travel-gear/peak-design/travel-backpack-30l/ -Eric
Thanks for the video. From the looks of it, the backpack does not fit for me. Maybe you have a suggestion for what i need. I work as a teacher and carry both books and some tech stuff and sports stuff. So i need some organizational compartments and a volume of about 30l. For your help i would be very grateful!
Actually as a student, I think the cavern would be good for text books, and then a place for the text for the laptop or tablet. I know you want to show off things that are questionable, but I remember the design process of this bag with Chase, and why he wanted the removable chest strap, and the hide away straps. I do not ever really use a luggage pass through except from the car to check in. Since, I fly with checked bags to and from the states. I Iactually would not mind this as a carry on, if I can have more than one bag on a plane again. SAS put a stop to it during COViD because of all the shipping they were doing, they really started to enforce weight and carry on, since they were barely transporting people. I guess before I travel home to Oregon this spring, I will look into becoming pro to make sure I get bags that fit with my chosen airline for under the seat and overhead storage. I prefer Iceland air since I get a chance to stretch my legs after 3 hours to the island. Question, does the side credit card wallet hide one of those leather covered RFID wallets or is it too tight?
I take it hiking in rain and snow down to -30C. In heavy rain I use the fly, in light rain I don’t bother. No water issues yet in two years. I have the 45L bag.
Much more honest review than Chase Reeves, in my opinion losing the side access, "front mesh pockets" becomes inaccessible if you put any cubes at all in the bag since it doesn't have another point of access makes it unusable and no waist belt this is a huge step back and fail from Peak Design. This isn't any type of significance smaller than the 45L it has the same foot print save an inch overall.
A no from me. Just seems that they’re doing design for design’s sake - and losing sight of simplicity and usability. I don’t like the sternum strap and magnetic fasteners, back panel doesn’t seem to have any breathability. I’ve got their tech pouch, and don’t love their materials either.
Right off the bat you showed me why I left Peak Design even though I love their company and all they stand for. Their continual refusal to make zippers that are properly lockable is unacceptable. At minimum if I just carry my camera with one lens on it that's $3,000. I decided to give PGY Tech a chance and bought their new sling a few weeks ago and I am happy with it and it's lockable. To continue to push that stupid little nylon strap "lock" as a way to secure your belongings is insulting.
@@MrJed_s I was thinking that too but he didn't get close enough for me to judge whether locks would get in there. Something I'd need to know b4 I ordered it

Thanks for that tip! I prefer having my backpack standing upright on my suitcase, minimizes risk of water bottles slipping out, and the like.
Interesting as the horizontal luggage pass through was a deal breaker for this for me
In the PD 45L I use that bottom magnetic pocket for the rain fly, which surprisingly takes up most of that space.
Same here. The extra space is definitely for the rain-fly.
Thanks all for the comments on the rain fly! We received an early sample while the details were still getting ironed out 🙂
Rain fly indeed. Though personally, I use that space on the everyday for plastic bags in case I end up buying more groceries than I can fit in the bag
There is no 30l rain fly option.

Hey there! You could probably reach your hand in there, but it would be a challenge. You'd be reaching in blind, so it would take some practice, and your other items might be in the way.

Please do a comparison video between this bag and the Bellroy transit backpack.
Added to our list for content consideration-thanks!

Hi, does this fit underneath the aircraft seat? Thanks.
The bag is 3” too tall for budget airlines. It probably would fit under the seat but if you have it fully packed I think it would be hard to fit in the sizer.
Hi, what is the main difference between the new 30L and the old 30L launched in 2018
Hey Zul! The everyday 30L is designed to be a larger capacity daypack for photography. This bag is designed more for travel.

Does the Large PD Camera Cube fit in it?
With each generation of PD, the disappointment is bigger and bigger. With v2, they have removed many of nice accents (especially the all-black version plus Tote packs v2 are really not a pleasant design). This back just looks more like a daily ZIP backpack, no snaps for the compression, no side access, it really is a different bag to its 45L sibling.
Thanks for sharing your take, Petr!

The big pocket in the bottom is for you to store their raincover, that you can buy seperately.
They should have a hook or some Velcro or something in the top of that pocket then to attach to it so it doesn't fall out in transit. As Tom said, that magnet doesn't seem v secure
@@susie9893 The Rainfly comes with two straps that lock around the two bottom attachment points that you can see being used by Tom at 13:42
They are specifically made like that, so you can pull out the pouch with the rainfly, unfold it, and drape it over the bag without having to loosen those two straps. Even in the windiest conditions the rainfly won't fly away, if the wind somehow catches it.
The rainfly however was designed for the 45L version and other bigger bags that they have. It might be slightly too big for this one, although you can sinch it down a bit.
Does this fit under the seat in an airplane?
Hey Jorge - it has fit under the seat on the 4 flights we've tested this bag on, but it always depends on the aircraft!

@@PackHacker2 Thanks! That's good to know.
@@PackHacker2By any chance, do you remember if it was expanded or compressed? Thanks!
But this gives me hope that I made a good decision by ordering one for Black Friday.
Great review, as always. Thanks!
Thanks for checking it out 😃

Also prefer vertical luggage passthrough.
17:47. Is the length there in the back zippers to thread it through the front zippers for theft deterrent?
Hey there! Yes, the extra length in the zipper pulls is there as a theft deterrent. If you go back a little further, you can see the whole process.

Just wondering, does the optional rain fly also fit well the 30L travel backpack?
Hey Michael! We didn't test the Rain Fly on the 30L, but it seems to be designed specifically with the 45L in mind according to their site.

Super detailed review. Thank you! Im between the Tortuga Outbreaker and this one. :)
Thanks for watching, John 😃

good video and the bag looks great!
Anyone knows if it fits the pd camera cube small without expanding the bag?
Does anyone know how hot the back gets? Sweaty etc.?
If it’s hot, the back panel will probably get a bit warm. The back panel is raised and has some aeration, so that helps! See the full review for more information about the pack: packhacker.com/travel-gear/peak-design/travel-backpack-30l/

Thanks for the video. From the looks of it, the backpack does not fit for me. Maybe you have a suggestion for what i need. I work as a teacher and carry both books and some tech stuff and sports stuff. So i need some organizational compartments and a volume of about 30l. For your help i would be very grateful!
You should check out the Aer Duffel Pack 3. I'll drop a link below.

Great review of a prime pack!
Appreciate it, Filipe!

Great review
is that a thing now?a few handred dollars backpack??
what is the markup on that? 1000%?
Is suitable for 7 days trip?!
That will depend on your needs. For some, a 30L pack will only last a weekend. For others, it could hold your gear for months or years!
- Austin
has anyone tested the weather resistance of this?
I take it hiking in rain and snow down to -30C. In heavy rain I use the fly, in light rain I don’t bother. No water issues yet in two years. I have the 45L bag.
Thanks for sharing, Aaron!

Thanks, AA studio-objectivity & honesty are what we aim for with every video-happy you found this video helpful!

A no from me. Just seems that they’re doing design for design’s sake - and losing sight of simplicity and usability.
I don’t like the sternum strap and magnetic fasteners, back panel doesn’t seem to have any breathability. I’ve got their tech pouch, and don’t love their materials either.
Anyone else trying to justify ditching the Pakt to grab this?
Baffled by the decision to have no access to the inside pockets without having to unload the bag.
What's stopping us from adding a regular lock through the circular metals bits of the zipper pulls? Seems like a perfect solution to me.
@@MrJed_s I was thinking that too but he didn't get close enough for me to judge whether locks would get in there. Something I'd need to know b4 I ordered it
Why not just put a little TSA code lock through the loops on the zipper pulls? Simple.
Do people still carry laptops? Seems like a wasted space, meaning added weight.
So you have to take out the entire camera cube to access the bottom pockets?!? I'm sorry but that's the worst design ever.
