    I used to question why people loved a book I didn't like, or I loved and others didn't like. I don't anymore. I've come to realize that not everyone is going to feel the same way about a book, and whatever the reasons, it's not for me to ponder. It is what it is. That being said, I loved this book, as well as the other two books in the series. I didn't really know what to expect going in, but I was willing to give it a shot based on my love for Empire of the Vampire. It pulled me in right away and never let go until I read the last words of the page/series. By the way, Empire of the Vampire was my favorite book I read in 2021, and Nevernight was my favorite of 2022. Not sure when Empire of the Vampire 2 is coming out, but there is still time for Kristoff to make it a hat trick. Cheers!

      @@MattsFantasyBookReviews My favorite series of all time is The Dark Tower by Stephen King. Nothing comes close, but I do have other series I love . . . Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, The Wheel of Time, A Song of Ice and Fire, The War For the Rose Throne, Red Rising . . . other series could join my top 10 when they are complete, but still waiting on some books 3's of series. And non-fantasy, I really love the Hap & Leonard series of books by Joe R. Lansdale.

    From what you’re saying, it sounds like this book suffers from the thing I dislike most about the Throne of Glass series, which is the reader constantly being bombarded with “just trust me, she’s the best assassin in the world.” And then never actually being shown anything to back up that claim at all

I just picked up the Alex Verus series and read the first book and if you are looking for a nice quick palette cleanser I think you will like these. The series is Urban Fantasy and Dresden-esque without the misogyny. I can't wait to read the rest of the series as it is 12 books and already complete! Check it out and I think you would enjoy it. The character has quite a special power and I'm impressed the author is able to give the character a power like that and keep it interesting and exciting.

    Man, I didn't even make it past page 35 in this book. I couldn't deal with the writing. It's as inaccessible as it comes for us people on the spectrum. The similes made no sense and it was a chore to read. I just didn't feel like reading a book where I need at least 35 pages to get into it every time I started reading it. And those pages would take me an hour or, most likely, longer to read.
    So even before watching this I feel like I've met a like mind.
    I always feel like Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor is similar in the non-sensical writing, but at least Laini Taylor has a way with words I can appreciate. I just feel like that book didn't need to be over 500 pages (stopped at like page 240 in that one btw). And it's not even poetic writing that's the problem. I really like the writing in The Name of the Wind and I think it's pulled off well in A Chorus of Dragons, and ok in The Wars of Light and Shadow (even if it's a bit much in there, too much at times). Jay Kristoff is just not my style.

I mean, the first paragraph is really just so awesomely over the top morbid and disgusting that it made me laugh - and and sets the tone for the whole book (no it's not quotable here, you would have to read it for yourself 😛).

    Empire of the vampire is quite lackluster aswell in my opinion..purple writting and that´s fine...the plot while promising drags a lot, the twists are weak or meaningless..the characters are forgetable, I did not care for a single character dying on that book.

    Wooow. Top 3 worst of all time? After you mentioned that you knew it would be bad after first 5 pages I paused the video, downloaded Kindle sample and... I like it. The writing is very flowery but it seemed to me in a good and interesting way.
    I wanted to give this a shot ever since I read Empire of the Vampire but there's some other priority books to cross off my TBR first.
    I'm surprised how bad your reaction is. To each his own of course but I often find myself agreeing with you. Probably the most out of all booktubers... I wonder if when I'll finally get to Nevernight I'm going to regret it.

    • @MattsFantasyBookReviews
      @MattsFantasyBookReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reading these comments, I think a big problem was that I listened to the audiobook. It has unskippable footnotes, and the footnotes are a DRAG.

  • @chrisrussell1106
    @chrisrussell1106 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Interesting take. I struggled through the first 100 pages (getting to the mountain), then blew through the rest of the trilogy in less than a week. Nevernight IS the weakest book because of that opening, but I found the rest to be a high-octane thrill ride.
    I also started reading Kristoff with Empire of the Vampire (a masterpiece) and found his approach to prose to be almost identical between the novels MINUS the first one hundred pages of Nevernight. You're absolutely right - he WAS too wordy and descriptive at the start. But in my opinion, that flawed beginning didn't carry on through the rest of the series.
    To each their own. I'll be right there with you when EoTV2 comes out.

    • @MattsFantasyBookReviews
      @MattsFantasyBookReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I'm thinking part of my problem was the fact I listened to this on audio and couldn't skip the footnotes. I thought the footnotes were rather weak in this one and really dragged.

    • @chrisrussell1106
      @chrisrussell1106 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MattsFantasyBookReviews Ironically, there's an in-world reason why the footnotes are so flowery, dense, and self-assured of their "cleverness." It's truly an "Aha" moment when you find out what's going on. But I can 100% see how they would drag on Audio. Nevernight is probably THE WORST book you could ever listen to.

    My big brother wanted me gift me something, so my smart ass asked for the nevernight chronicles box set! woohoo! I wanted it bcoz it seemed interesting and the reveiws on amazon were good. The box set arrived- books were in pristine condition and I was stoked! Started reading the first book and have barely progressed to chapter 6. fyi I got the box set in january.. it took me 6 months to somehow finish 6 chapters of this dreadful dreadful book!! It's soo boring.. the prose of jay kristoff is excruciatingly painful to read. I simply hate it.. and not to mention the extra info provided on every goddamn page as footnotes.. oh God! why ? and more than once those "footnotes" covered more than half the page! It was soo distracting and soo over the top. This book is a nightmare. I am happy to have found your review which is soo relatable and am utterly confused looking at the state of the comments. why is everyone supporting this shitty prose! it gave me a headache but it was people like these (in the comments) who pushed me to buy this book series. to each his own i guess. I've stopped reading the book at the sand kraken part - never knew an action sequence could be so terrible... and now begun reading my first brandon sanderson novel- mistborn! and I AM LOVING THIS PROSE!!!

    I hated this book, the metaphors and similes were so bad that most of the time I didn't know what the f*ck the words were suppose to mean, they were just SO over the top, way way way over the top. I love a beautifully written book, and lovely prose, but this book was ridiculous. And hey, I have no issues with sex scenes, I read them, as a writer/published author, I write them, but the sex scenes in this book were cringy and weird and creepy, made more so that the POV is of 16 year old Mia is actually a middle-aged guy. I think a woman with a woman's POV and a woman's experience would have done justice to this story. I want to say that there are men who do just fine writing women. Garth Nix and his Old Kingdom books are some of my favorites that I've loved since grade school, so I don't have an issue with a man writing a young girl, if you want to check out those books I highly recommend them.
