    The imposter syndrome and the anxiety is very real, and it's one of those things I've always go to remind myself not to allow it to define me. We are where we are because we're good enough. The challenge ahead always has a solution, and we are strong enough to overcome it. Thanks for the reminder Heinrich.

    Also need to distinguish if the negative feedback is true feedback or just a way for your bosses to use you to cover themselves

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Emily, yes fully agree - though this is of course often subjective and a question of your individual "perception" ;) Best! Heinrich

    • @Emilyghe
      @Emilyghe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@FirmLearning yes it could be subjective in the beginning. But after comparing yourself to the peers and getting positive feedback from other bosses, you can tell some negative feedback is a strategy to cover leader’s inability to lead a project. I feel most juniors should keep a sharp eye on that when they start to unnecessarily lose confidence. In my case, I saw that as a company trend already.

    I wish i saw this before my first tough feedback session from the engagement manager who said that the hiring team made a mistake to assign me my grade and should've assigned me not even a one step lower grade but two steps lower grade. I was so devastated. And ofc I believed him completely and was absolutely sure that I was utter sh*t! Fast forward six months and I got promoted with praise from my new engagement manager! Like whaaa :D

    Very often it is also about the expectation of your leadership team ... you get keywords and have to accomplish e.g a project ... during the process you may realize that what you have done so far has not met the expectation ... this also means that at the beginning of a project you need to be clear what is expected ... ask before you start if something is unclear that may save a lot of stress and frustration... try to scratch a plan before kicking off

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Juniors usually don't have that broad perception and might be shy in this process of asking and confirming expectations. I was more prone to fail on that as well.
      The simplest step is reporting the progress of your working stream to the project lead and pointing out your worries about the obstacles you're not overcoming. It tends to be easier for the junior to assume barriers than taking the risk of silly questions - which is a bit connected with the impostor syndrome.

    I recently started an Associate role in one of the Big 4 (fresh out of university). I’ve been on my toes the entire time because my team handles dozens and dozens of clients simultaneously-my brain can only handle so much and I can physically feel it splitting apart sometimes. I’ve never had a day when I felt that I was able perform at par with my fellow Associates. Your advice (and all your other videos) really helped me manage my expectations moving forward. I’m just a month in, anyway.

    My age is still young, 15 years old, and I still think your video is helpful. Short sayings though, in giving away my experiences and sharing people about my failures also gives me comfort, it helps me to forget about it. I do have one particular experience.
    I was a very quite person, I rarely give out my opinions to my classmates, but one day in a debate assignment, I did. Think back, I don't know what I did wrong, whether is the delivery or just the bad opinion, I always feel anxious thinking about it.
    Luckily, I've grown now, but I have never share this story to anyone. So maybe there's somebody out there reading this. And if there some one person, thank you and GBU for reading until the end 🙏

I would say that with the right mindset, impostor syndrome can be extremely beneficial because it helps you identify your weaknesses easily and you can leverage this to work on improving yourself. 0:40 stressful situations.
    first, negative feedback: not good enough
    2:15 junior associate. i was criticized by the clients and partners that I'm not good enough and add enough values.
    this is not uncommon, when project is very draining.
    4:35 tips and reflection: i was maybe treated unfairly.
    5:25 perception is reality: in corporate situation, it's very important to manage the perception of other people have about you.
    5:40 people attach lots of meaning to failure. but failure has no meaning. let this sink in. successful people fail all the time.
    why bothers you so much that you get this feedback? you decide the meaning yourself
    6:50 what's the worst that can happen? that's why it's important to keep the savings rate high.
    8:05 i work hard and still not enough, then this is what it is.
    second, feeling of imposter syndrome: hired by accident and worried to be found out by colleagues you're incompetent/ fraud.
    the first project with 3 other associates. they could do excel three four times faster than i do.
    9:50 brain power & social competences:
    how they handle tough situations, such as flipchart/ brainstorming with clients.
    10:00 it was unthinkable to me that, i would even close to them. i do feel like a false-positive in the recruiting process.
    10:40 tips and reflection:
    first. people have strength and weakness. some people may be very good at mental math.
    maybe you are more empathetic and handle client meetings.
    second. trust the process: developing
    third. it's just over the time, you know how to cover things up better.
    focus on strength.
    13:30 third, too much work: sleep deprivations.
    a lot of things are expected from me. esp, in high-profile job.
    14:50 tips and reflection:
    eat light and healthy. not pizza and pasta.
    do sports in work week (cardio)
    enjoy the moments.

    Good video!! What helped me with 1. was understanding that negative feedback is actually an accelerated path to career development. So asking for specific constructive suggestions to my supervisor was much better than beating me up for how “bad” I could be

    Great lessons! Exercises had the same impact on my routine as well: more energy, enthusiasm, and a sensation my body was stronger to follow me on the hard routines.
    I enjoyed the tip about healthy food as a compensation for the damages we do to our bodies with temporary sleep deprivation. Eating healthy is common sense already, but that was a perspective I haven't thought about.

    11:13 I definitely suffer from this mindset. I see other people doing great in an area that I am and I lose confidence, forget about my strengths, and focus more on trying to turn my weaknesses into strengths.....At times, I may even stop communicating because I fear my managers may think less of me, based on my questions/concerns

    Hi Heinrich. Maybe it's stupid but.. the reaction i had after watching this video has been thinking about the "i can feel you bro" meme. Work-life balance went down the drain due to this covid.
