Loved the way you described Bright Future. Such a stunning record. The widescreen and Wizard of Oz comparisons when Sadness opens up is spot on. Really wish we had had a third ticket so you could have joined us when we saw her live. It was the same kind of vibe carried through for an entire set of her solo stuff and Big Thief songs, half of it with the musicians who played on the record/half solo. Get Songs and Instrumentals if you don't already have it. And Capacity by Big Thief is one of my faves. Along with the last one and the two from 2019. Oh hell, get all of them. Hurray for the Riff Raff's The Past Is Still Alive is a pretty good record too. She's also wearing a cowboy hat on the cover.
Love a heads up on new stuff Mazzy. Born when Ike was president but always looking for something fresh. Have been streaming Cowboy Carter and bought Renaissance and Lemonade. Back in the eighties I went to Seattle to a record store in the university district and underneath the the glass counter were hundreds of used cassettes priced at 4 dollars each. I asked the worker what new band would you recommend I buy? He said I should buy the first album by a new band called Rem. He said it would take a while but they would grow on me. We were into punk rock at the time and when we got back to the car, I plugged in the cassette which was wound to the beginning of side 2 . It started with the words,Ooh we were little boys Ooh we were little girls. I go " what is this country crap . But it didn't take long at all and they were one of my favorite groups at the time. And guess who the worker was . His name was Scott McCauley from a local group called the young fresh fellows and he didn't have any Idea that he would eventually join rem on records and as part of the touring band until they disbanded. That is and interesting take on the best album so far this year. Rhiannan Giddens plays the gut string banjo on the first single off the album, not sure if she is doing all the banjo parts of the album or not? But anyway, if playing on a Beyounce Record creates new fans for Giddens and others I am all for it. Enjoyed it, Elliott
My favorite new records of 2024 so far are: Beyonce, St. Vincent, Chappell Roan, Billie Eilish, and Kacey Musgraves. I’ve also noticed the distortion near the end of side 4 of the Beyoncé. It is cut very close to the record label.
Thanks, Mazzy. 2024 is a lot to absorb musically and that's fantastic. I would suggest you (well, everyone really) check out Hawkwind's *Stories of Time and Space* CD, which has gorgeous original art along with being a very good album. (I can't say it's truly great only because it's in the shadow of last years *The Future Never Waits* which is brilliant beyond belief.) I'm still listening to Norah Jones and Guster while anticipating albums from the new band English Teacher and also Public Service Broadcasting's tribute to Amelia Earhart. What a year we have going here!
When I read the caption of this video, I thought it must surely be Adrianne Lenker's Bright Future. Big Thief and Ms. Linker have been among my favorite artists for quite a few years. I love it when you review new music.
I could tell from the thumbnail that the Lenker album was the "real" choice here because, coincidentally enough, I just started listening to it and recognized that cover. I had never heard of her but Robert Christgau gave the album an A, so I decided to try it out. I'm listening in the car, so I won't get back to it until later, and I've only heard "Real House" so far - but it's a very moving song and I can't wait to hear the rest.
Ok Mazzy, Im.gonna go listen to Adrianne Lanker, but I still want you to listen to Ballin' Jack. Start with their self titled first album. It won't disappoint.

Selling a ton of records has never been the deciding factor of a great record. The weak-minded listener will always buy cheap pop crap. Sometimes a great-selling album is also a great album (Dark Side of the Moon comes to mind). Now the other album you talked about could be a diamond in the rough. Thanks again!
