I'll be starting The White-Luck Warrior after I finish my current read (Parable of the Sower). It was not easy to find a physical copy -- I'm glad you'll be able to help with pronunciations when we discuss it! I'm looking forward to Peril's Gate too, and I think August will work well to discuss it. And I am extremely excited for the discussion of Return to Edan at the end of this month! Thank you so much for organizing and hosting it, Johanna!
My brain still likes to make up my own weird pronunciations, but it sounds like your pronuciations were correct in our last discussion! I am hearing the hard “K” sound for the letter “C.” I’m very excited about our future discussions, Philip! Happy reading!
So you are in Parable. You really should finish Talents. These are short books compared how impactful they are. Incredible reads. Good examples of sci-fi and why we need more of it on booktube. 👏
I think you’ll love Lonesome Dove. The audiobook really added to the experience for me. It is brilliantly narrated and the voices and accents added to the ambiance. Happy reading.
Fabulous reading plans! Hyperion is already a classic. Pure big idea SF with literary flair and interesting stracture. Lonesome Dove swept me away; big book but I read it very quickly. Like you I’m typically a slow reader. I picked up in a used book store Never Let Me Go yesterday. Since I really enjoyed Klara I decided to read me from this acclaimed author. 😀 Happy Summer Reading!
You have some fantastic books scheduled this summer! The Paper Menagerie is one of the best short story collections I've ever read and Philip sticks the landing in his trilogy (that was my favorite of the series). Hyperion and Lonesome Dove are both top 15 books of all time for me. Have a fantastic reading summer!
I have a feeling The Paper Menagerie will be a universal recommend from me. I’m loving the collection so far! I’m excited for all the other books. Happy reading, Josh!
Edan! ❤️🤩 I will also be reading “A Brightness Long Ago” by Guy Gavriel Kay this Summer, as well as the "Prince of Nothing" Trilogy by R. Scott Bakker (It was unintentional, but the fact that I will be reading both «The Darkness That Comes Before» and «A Brightness Long Ago» this month, is indeed some ironic Canadian Ying & Yang…eh! 😄). Looking forward to hear your thoughts! 😃 Next on my Summer TBR, I have: The "Memory, Sorrow & Thorn" Trilogy by Ted Williams (Epic Fantasy, major inspiration for GRR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire") “All Tomorrow's Parties" by William Gibson (#3 in the "Bridge" Trilogy, Cyberpunk) "Tiamat's Wrath" & "Leviathan Falls" by James S.A. Corey (The final two novels in the "Expanse" Space Opera series) “The City” & “The Wall” by Adrian Goldsworthy (Historical Military Fiction set during the Campaigns of Roman Emperor Trajan and the construction of Hadrian’s Wall). On my Summer MBR/Early Fall TBR List I have “Lustrum" by Robert Harris (Book #2 in the "Cicero" Trilogy, Historical Fiction about the Roman Statesman) and “The Power Broker" by Robert Caro (a Classic of Investigative Journalism/Political Biographies). Also, I will get to the “Sun Eater” books by Christopher Ruocchio as soon I get my hands on them: Next up there for me, is “Demon in White” (#3)! Wish you a great Summer! 😊
I love how you paired those two titles! While I haven't yet read A Brightness Long ago, I'm sure you'll notice the tonal contrast between the two books. Sounds like you have great reading plans. Wishing you a great summer as well! 😊
Plans 🙌 I love Ishiguro. The Remains of the Day is one of my favourite books. Never Let Me Go is very good....but ....pretty freaky. I won't say any more 😮. I have also read Klara And The Sun by him and that was fantastic as well. Happy summer reading 📚
The Remains of the Day is a true classic. Hyperion is really great (mostly). I don't love it like most people, certain parts really didn't hit for me, but other parts were so amazing. The short story structure really elevates it; a love letter to various sci-fi genres. I still need to read Lonesome Dove, Bakker, more GGK, Wurts.
I’m so glad to hear your praise for Remains of the Day. I have such a strong Johanna-book feeling about it. Thanks for letting me know you weren’t as high on Hyperion. I do like the idea of a short story structure right now. Join the informal Fireside Lonesome Dove readalong! 🥳😄
Lonesome Dove is on my summer TBR as well. I really want to read it. I just picked up my first GGK book. I found a Canadian first edition, first printing of A Song for Arbonne. So that will be my first GGk read some time in the near future. I tried to read Remains of the Day. It was not for me. Great video!
Hooray! I hope we both love Lonesome Dove. A Song for Arbonne is amazing, and that's awesome that you found that edition. Can't wait to hear your thoughts!
Lonesome Dove is very good. It can be a bit of a slow start. A lot of character work in the first part. I liked Remains of the Day much more than Never Let Me Go
I appreciate hearing that about the start of Lonesome Dove, so I'll know what to expect. I might prioritize Remains of the Day over Never Let Me Go. Thank you!
Great reading plans! I sorely need to dive into Hyperion, but Wolfe comes first(I need to finish Sword & Citadel). Bakker I have seen him everywhere, but I'm not sure I can commit to another series right now. Peril's Gate, wow! I didn't know it was that huge! The Remains of the Day I had to google it, but I'll wait for your review, honestly. I love manga/anime, but I had had a hard time with Japanese books. Happy reading!
Thank you, Livia! I'm curious to learn what Japanese books you’ve read if you're comfortable sharing. I just started the very beginning of Hyperion and am already intrigued!
Scoring the ‘right’ editions with the desired cover art is definitely a thing! I much preferred the US styling to “The Dandelion Dynasty” which got reprinted mid-release over here 🇬🇧 but I decided I couldn’t abide a mix ‘n’ match either, so 🇬🇧 editions it was.
While the UK usually wins all the cover art contests, I prefer the U.S. ones for the Bakker editions! 😮 I slightly prefer the U.K. Dandelion editions but agree that both sets are nice.
Sounds like you have a wonderful summer ahead of you!! Especially curious to hear your thoughts on Hyperion and Return to Edan. Happy reading Johanna! 🥰
Those are some solid picks. Reading Aspect Emperor and Hyperion at the same time should be an interesting experience! And then there's Sarantine Mosaic. You're reading some great stuff I really want to get to soon . . .
I’m so glad you have the rest of the Hyperion Cantos, Johanna! I only need to read Rise of Endymion now. I’ve loved them all so far. Paper Menagerie is on my list to read at some point.
Hi Johanna. I've only read the title story of "The Paper Menagerie" and I loved it! I didn't own the book at that time. I read it when it appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. My summer reading plans (always subject to mood) include my current read, The Demon of Unrest by Erik Larson, a re-read of East of Eden by John Steinbeck, and finishing Don Quixote. Later this year I hope to finally read Hyperion and begin reading Book 1 of ASOIAF. Happy reading.
yay Hyperion! I was so glad when he picked that for you. I believe you will love it and I can't wait to hear your thoughts! You will finish Lonesome Dove. It reads a bit faster than it looks. An all time Top 10 for me (I think).
Now that's a great lineup for a wonderful reading summer! Lonesome Dove is a book I couldn't put down a few years ago. The only Dan Simmons book I have read was The Terror which was absolutely amazing. I have Hyperion on my shelf so I hope it is as good. I am hoping to get to The Darkness That Comes Before this summer based on your enthusiasm for the series.
I think you will like Hyperion and its blend of genres. I think its strengths are the characters, prose and themes. I hope you continue the series as I actually liked the plot progression and sci-fi concepts more in The Fall of Hyperion (although I am in the minority haha).
Yay can't wait for you to read Hyperion and hear your thoughts. To start the summer I plan on reading Timequake by Vonnegut and then Wolves of the Calla by King, that one being chunky we will see how long it takes 😂.
Looks like we have some books in common this summer. I, too, am reading Hyperion and also The Way of Edan. Looking forward to chatting with you tomorrow. :)
I'm really curious about the Second Apocalypse series. I won't get to it for now, but I'm definitely interested. Same for The Paper Menagerie and for Lonesome Dove. Hyperion, though, is one that I LOVE. There's so much that worked so well to me in that book. And I think Fall of Hyperion is pretty good, too.
Hyperion was excellent! I highly recommend The Paper Menagerie! Second Apocalypse series is so well-written but very bleak with very high trigger warnings. Happy reading!
Those Aspects-Emperor are rough. I found mine at the used bookstore near me, so I got the hardcovers cheaper than the kindle editions but they are not prettying up my bookshelf. Your pronunciation of names in the series has been mostly spot on so I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. I have Lonesome Dove audio edtion on hold from the library but it's one of those things were it's at a 3+ month waitlist for it. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the books from thos tbr
How amazing to find the Aspect-Emperor hardcover editions! I’m amazed how popular Lonesome Dove continues to be. I’m on a several month wait for the ebook, but I did just get access to a library physical copy. Several people here highly recommended the audiobook, so I’ll be checking that out as well. Happy reading!
@@Johanna_reads even if you will think that Hyperion 2 is slog (I didn’t feel that) you should try the next part. It’s very different from the original two.
It's not often I'd recommend audio over physical, but if possible you should read Lonesome Dove on audio. Lee Horsley's narration is without a doubt my favourite performance of all time, and while I imagine the book would still be fantastic read physically, I think I was able to love it even more thanks to his narration. 10/10 experience. I'd also recommend Remains of the Day before Never Let Me Go but I guess it's just up to your preference on what grabs you more. All I'll say is don't judge Ishiguro solely on Never Let Me Go. I think it's far from his best.
You've convinced me! I think that will help though I also prefer having a visual edition on hand. Maybe I'll read Remains of the Day before Never Let Me Go. Thanks for weighing in!
I also liked the original cover style than the faces on Aspect Emperor. What is really irritating is that one of them is about an inch taller than the rest.

Lonesome Dove, Hyperion and White-luck Warrior? Fabulous selection.
