Following Chizuru losing her powers in KOF 2003, she lost the will to fight but asked Shingo to bring Kyo and Iori together to stop Ash and Those from the Past. In their ending, due to Orochi's presence growing stronger, Iori goes "Wild", wounds Kyo and SEVERELY injures Shingo. to the point that he could not return for KOF XIII. This does, however, allow Ash to easily steal Iori's power due to him losing his mind. - Leona is absent and thus Whip takes her place in the Ikari Warriors Team. However, they are all literally just taken from Neo Geo Battle Coliseum just like how Geese and Goenitz were taken from KOF 2002 for SVC Chaos and KOF 2002 UM. - Mai Shiranui is noticeably absent in this game. In KOF 2003, she only appeared to find Andy who's actually not even in that game... but knowing that he's not coming to this tournament (to attend to his student, Hokutomaru from Garou), Mai also did not come... Though Promotional Art for the PS2 version of this game shows that Mai was invited to the tournament due to her absence despite Andy not being there. Yay~ - In the PS2 version, there are Special Edit Team ending pictures just like KOF '98/KOF '98 UM and KOF 2002 UM. - There are also new stages in the PS2 version and exclsive themes and remixes of specific characters. For example, you can hear a remix of Big Shot! (from Fatal Fury 3) if Terry's the leader in this game. You can also hear a remix of Duck Dub Dub (from Fatal Fury Special) if Duck King is the leader and first opponent faught in the Concert Stage. That's all for now! Hope you enjoyed reading!
@@ShingoKhan Unfortunately, Adelheid and several other characters never made it into XIII as playable characters since they were cut for budgetary reasons.
Looking at that Kyo sprite gave me some serious PTSD, I remember back in the early 2000's when i figured out m.u.g.e.n was a thing and i went into a program to completely re-edit the Kyo sprite into some dumbass OC idea i had in those days. Changed the hair white, eyes green, jacket black, shirt red, and most obnoxiously of all, tried to change every single flame sprite/effect from traditional orange-red to blue. took me weeks if not months as i barely knew what i was doing and was mostly editing it nearly frame-by-frame. . .until of course, the flashdrive i had the mugen data on fell out of my bag and got crushed. Needless to say my 1st and last time attempting sprite editing
@@georgehernandez2156 Yeah, I know. I'm not a big SNK Fan myself, but I've appreciated their work from afar. Especially when it comes to their sprite work. (IE: Kim's Pants) Rugal's one of my favorite SNK Villians. So I hope they do more with Adel. I would seriously love to have a special team made of Rock, Adelheid, Shun'ei or Ash in the next KOF.
@@gig_gaming2555 I remember that there was talk back then of making him the next central protagonist in a future KOF way back in the day, but it seems the idea has been scrapped. Shame, really, as he was basically KoF's Rock Howard (evil dad, has similar moves, actually a good guy).
KuroNoTenno Oh, of course he is. I would never argue that point. I just prefer Iori’s moveset, and his inclusion indicated a shift to a more serious type of fighting game. Sakurai himself is a big fan of Iori, but if anyone deserved to get in, it’s definitely Terry.
Because Iori is cheap as fuck. He is a pain in every game he appears. He has ridiculously good normals, great specials and his combos are easy and damaging. He is not the most OP playable character in the series, but he is definitely one of the best.
I know very little about Ash apart from that he steals both Chizuru and Iori's powers throughout the arc, but he really does look like a smug SOB... but his fate in XIII did make me pity him a little. ...but then he probably came back by the end of XIV, if the Official Invitation Team's ending is any indication.
Curious how Shion is actually a Man,and Magaki oh boy you can give a really hard time he's the hardest Kof Boss(in my opinion) for some good reasons...
Shion was designed as a female and voiced by a female. Then before release a developer decided she should be a dude to cause controversy or some retarded thing like that...
I personally like the judgment system on this game :3 it makes me feel that the winner of the match really deserves to win. Also agreeing with you on the UI
Other than like Neowave, no names under the energy bars, though if you know the roster inside and out, it's not too much of an issue. Plus hey, a lot of unlockable characters (like yet again, Neowave).
ADELHEID!!!! And Max says he looks like an asshole...First Athena, then Kensou, and now Adelheid. There goes any hope of me seeing Max using Rock and Adelheid on the same team in XV assuming Adel is in it... On a side note, KoF XIII got nothing on Shion's animations.
Dont get so excited about any Kof - Max relation. He is not a fan of the games in first place. He has Cvs2 to get his Rock/Terry cravings after all... (those two are the only Snk things ever that he likes)
Maybe this wasn't the best way to introduce himself into all the KoF games. It was kind of a shore, a time pressed activity where he couldn't really take his time with the games
This is the only KOF I've ever had a chance to play and it's actually one of my favorite ones to watch. You can do some crazy stuff with the tag system, like bringing in the whole team in the course of one combo; it looks insane. It's kind of weird they introduced Adel Bernstein to be a new KOF protagonist, but I think this is the only game where he is actually playable. It's even funnier that this game has four Garou characters and Rock isn't one of them.
Back then SNK was too stubborn to add Rock because they are reserving him for Garou 2... well that and they made young Rock appear during Terry's win pose in 2002
I randomly reachers KOF XI gameplay and I ran into this, I got so much nostalgia from this, I remember beating Magaki when I was like 6/7 years old for the first time and I felt so accomplished since my uncle was the one who taught me all the moves to the game. It’s still one of my proudest accomplishments
Low-key one of my favorite KOF entries, and also the one that took all my quarters. Fuck Magaki, I can't believe I actually suffered thru him plenty of times with different character just to get most story/cutscenes out of it
Okay so... The "nameless dude" is called "Adelheid Bernstein" he is the son of Rugal and he is actually quite honorable (which you WOULD HAVE KNOWN if you played KOF2003) Shion is a dude. But he was originaly designed as a woman and the whole "Shion is actually male" thing was a last minute decision.
2003 is not very memorable... The animations don't have that much impact and the sound department is... Weird(not the music tracks, thou). Still think it's heavily underrated and is definitely better than '01
I just bought 2003 on Xbox one, the neogeo port and I love it! I love the movement, everything seems super fast and responsive. Idk if it’s just in that specific port or something but I don’t see why people say it sucks at ALL.
This is, by far, my absolute favorite King of Fighters game. Diverse roster, great soundtrack, beautiful stages, good-looking character artwork, and awesome new gameplay mechanics. The only gripe I have with this game is Magaki, an infuriating bullet hell given human(?) form. Otherwise, I'd kill for KOFXI to be ported to PSN and Steam.
Diverse in the sense of different from most of the previous ones? Because no game had an issue with diversity or even gameplay diversity, since the first game.
@@carlosaugusto9821 Diverse in the sense of adding unexpected characters, such as Gai Tendo and Silber from Buriki One, along with Sho Hayate and Jyazu from Savage Reign/Kizuna Encounter.
@@E24KLawson Those are good. I Just dislike the unexpected change in traditional teams. Like, i would have no issues If it was just a much larger roster where the likes of Duck King could get in not interferring on FF team, for example. The same for others. I dont understand why they had that roster size goal since the memory technology was already able to allow a bigger roster. Bringing new chars to form new teams without harming the traditional ones would have been the best route to me. Also because i truly wanted some old chars like Duck to be permanents in Kof - but never in Andy or Joe's slot.
The villains in the 2003-XIII arc are basically ancient demigods who time traveled from the past to steal Orochi's power and do evil bad guy things with it.
They're just europpean Hakkeshu lmao. They also are a clan of Gaia, but instead lf worship Orochi, they plan to use it's power through their own leader
I was little and this was the only KOF game I've ever played. Went as well as you expect but I vividly remember Terry's design that it took me a moment later on to realize the classic terry was the same guy.
My favorite KOF game, and I still own the ps2 version. It also has one of my favorite versions of Kyo, when he had both his KOF 95 and 96 fighting styles in one character,(If players of the ps2 version didn't favor him, then nest saga Kyo was there as a good alternative). Shame KOF xi Kyo never came back, would been interesting seeing the amount potential he could had in the later games.

Surprised I'm seeing so much Adelheid positivity when I usually never see people mention him Man is not only a snack, he's related to Rugal and he's not an asshole.
He wasn't enjoying the game and he was playing on a controller y'all be whining about him burning through the game when hes hot enjoying it. When he fought omega rugal he spent like 30 mins trying to beat him with no assist and in 98um and 2002um he was having so much fun trying stuff out he was doing it for most the stream.
So, KOF XI was my very first introduction to the KOF series. A friend of mine owned a copy for PS2, and he brought it over one day. We played for hours, and as a boi that grew up on Street Fighter 2, this game was crazy to me. The mechanics and the characters were so different to what I was used to. I loved it so much that my friend let me keep it. I am proud to say that I beat the game with every team and unlocked all the endings that I could (I think there was a couple of characters I never did unlock). I love this games very dearly, even though there are objectively better KOF games out there, but I never forgot the characters, especially that blonde weirdo that looked like Leon S. Kennedy. I was very much looking forward to seeing how Max felt about it, just because of how different it was and how wacky the characters were. I have never owned another KOF game since, but it really left a lasting impression on me. I will always love this game, even though I am still, and will forever remain a scrub.
Thanks for playing this game man. I love XI so much. It was the last game that dominated an awesome arcade place in my city and I really wish it got an UE on Steam. Too bad it will never happen...
@@Bloodreign1 Let's not forget that both Sam Sho 6 and KOF XI are released in the Sammy Atomiswave arcade system, the system behind Guilty Gear Isuka, Guilty Gear X Ver. 1.5, Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, Metal Slug 6, Fist of the North Star, and the obscure Rumble Fish series.
KOFXI was an interesting entry. They shook up the roster a bit with some mainstays not making it in. Even Mai wasn't in XI initially. She, and Robert did get into the home port.
*The Final Boss is a Alien, I love that, something different and I love monstrous like Final Bosses, which is why Verse is one my favorite KoF Bosses.*

Say what you will about mechanics, but this game had the second best Robert of all KoF and Shion was a pretty interesting enemy. Also, here's an intersting bit. Shion was originally made to be female. The daughter of Long from Kof 2001, sadly they changed their minds way too late when her sprite work was already done, and now we have the weird and impossibly male Shion.

And a lot of people in the development team weren't very comfortable with her inclusion due to how young she looked (even in the Team Story, Kensou was uncomfortable).
- The Kusanagi-Yagami Team is formed by Kyo, Iori, and Shingo.
She's absent because she went "Wild" in her team's ending in KOF 2003 and hurt Ralf and Clark. She spents her absence trying to control her Orochi Blood...which she manages to do in KOF XIII and onwards! Good for her!
- In the PS2 version of this game, we have "newcomers" in the form of Mai Shiranui, Geese Howard, Mr. Big, Robert Garcia, Tung Fu Rue, Hotaru Futaba from Garou: MOTW, and "EX Kyo" (based on the NESTS Saga)...
Yay~
- In the PS2 version, there are Special Edit Team ending pictures just like KOF '98/KOF '98 UM and KOF 2002 UM.

I remember back in the early 2000's when i figured out m.u.g.e.n was a thing and i went into a program to completely re-edit the Kyo sprite into some dumbass OC idea i had in those days.

Because Iori is cheap as fuck. He is a pain in every game he appears. He has ridiculously good normals, great specials and his combos are easy and damaging.

Four Garou chars?
Is this counting Terry as Wild Wolf, or no?
