The animation of KOF 03 is really awesome! It reminds me of SNK vs Capcom SVC Chaos. You know what would be cool? If Boom Studios and Capcom came together to write an SNK vs Capcom crossover comic series. Technically you can do it in video games like Smash and the vs series like SNK and Capcom, but I thought it would be a good idea anyway.
And we finally see Mukai. Always thought this guy was cool. Side note, the largest Neo Geo games were 708 Megs running on the Giga Power software, which were Metal Slug 3 and 5, SamSho 5 and 5 special, and SvC Chaos. These were absolutely pushing the limits of some pretty old hardware than ran stuff from 1990, but SNK somehow managed to make KoF 2003 with 716 Megs, making it the largest and only one of it's size. The game itself even looks stupidly good on Neo Geo hardware, and they somehow made a 3v3 tag game with these limits.
Technically, it's 716 megaBITS, not MegaBYTES, as none of the cartridge-based consoles of the 90s actually used MB for measurement, but rather Mb. So KOF 2003 was actually 89.5 Megabytes, though that's still massively larger than anything ever released on something like the Genesis or Super Nintendo, as even the more recent homebrew games (like Pier Solar or Paprium) are still nowhere near as large as what these late Neo Geo games were. Hell, even the N64 never went this big, as its limit was 512 Mb, or just 64 MB. Yes, KOF 2003 is larger than the N64 version of Resident Evil 2!
@@saadhasan2518 Those were also huge, but I didn't mention them cause Garou was only 688 Megs, and AoF 3 was 298, which was somehwat large for not using the giga power.
@@saadhasan2518 True, anything late into the Neo Geo's life was impressive. The whole concept of the system having multiple cart slots was super cool and it would be interesting to see if it would have done even better in America and other places where it was more overlooked.

I hate Ash mainly because of his personality, he is a jerk but not a likeable one. Also, not a fan of his design and gameplay (expect in Maximum Impact Regulation A, Ash plays really good there)
Probably my favourite new addition from the Ash Saga, hope he comes back so they can develop his character more and give us a "Rugal" for non dream match games.
The big problem about this game is the poor sound. Also, while the characters are great there is still a lack of characters to which would be awesome in this edition of KOF.
I love when Maki just giggles and goes all over the place in max difficulty. When she actually switches to Chizuru the game is playable, but when she tags that GOD damn dancing kagebunshi naruto double it's all ogre.
Suprised he liked the game since most fans have rather mixe opinions about it, tho i wish the chat told him to check out Kyo and the Ikaris' team endings so he could grasp what's going on.
Feels like an actual boss fight (3 vs. 1) when the opponent has three life bars! It’s not often in fighting games boss characters have a different life bar from you because most fighters even the boss has the same life bar and power bar (sometimes don’t like Onslaught or Abyss but his power gauge displays but stays empty throughout the entire battle) you do. Apocalypse (his HP gauge displayed on the bottom of the screen), Galactus and Ultron Sigma (who have vertical health gauges, you don’t see that every day) are the exceptions however. You all know what health bars and power gauges are shaped like, right? Rectangles, popsicle sticks, indented rectangles (or parallelogram, is that what they’re called?) like the Wii banner and of course, parallelograms. The colours appear to be yellow, green (an appropriate colour for health bars imo), blue (which works for power bars imo) and sometimes red or whatever other colour they may be. We all know most of the time health bars are displayed on the top of the screen whereas power meters are sometimes below the vitality meter but most of the time it seems on the bottom of the screen along with what power level the character is on. Why does nobody seem to explain this?
Got this game from twitch prime rewards of all places and I've fallen in love. 2. KoF 2003
3. KoF 98
15 might topple 13 for me, we'll see
1. '02 UM
2. '98 UM
3. Xlll
Man i honestly never liked '03 that much and i thought most of the community felt the same, pretty crazy to see so much love for it here, lol.
Mukai is such an underrated boss since you don't ever see the guy even in the ONE game he is present.
He does appear in KoF13 tho.
Sweet one of my favorite KOF titles. Mainly since it’s Ash’s first appearance.
The Ash saga > NEST saga.
03 is great, XI is excellent and XIII is fucking amazing
what's most surprising for me is that he beat kusanagi in his 1st try
With a super move also
You can play with the Secret Treasures Team in this game (their ending is canon), but the cheatcode to unlock Chizuru is unbelievably hard to pull out
If you have the PS2 and Xbox version you can select her without the code
@@MattDeRac I had no idea! I only played the arcade version
How did I know he wouldn't write it as Tales of Ash saga
Some Fun Fact: Ash's VA also voices Balrog in SNK Vs Capcom.
Same devs apparently.
Ash's fireball super having full invincibility is one hell of a drug
GOOD LORD ALMIGHTY THAT PIXEL SPRITE!!!
This is amongst the most gorgeous game I’ve seen in years!! DAAAAM…..
Prior to XIII GM, this was the only Ash Saga game on Switch. Hopefully now they put XI on it.
They lost source code for XI so it's never happening
And then's there's Garou MOTW and Art Of Fighting 3
@@DrMario- but still on a then aging Neo Geo hardware they were able to pull it off
@@saadhasan2518 True, anything late into the Neo Geo's life was impressive. The whole concept of the system having multiple cart slots was super cool and it would be interesting to see if it would have done even better in America and other places where it was more overlooked.
Kof’98 and ‘99 are my favorite in the series ‘01 being the weirdest one lol 😆 and ‘95 having the best sound effects in the history of kOF imo.
It's funny that the KOF tournament part in this one is so short and they go right into the 'world ending/domination portion' of the story.
Listening to all these KOF narrations, I think Max should consider doing audiobooks. It'd be...an experience, if nothing else.
I am obsessed with this legacy series❤
Oh yes and suddenly everybody loves KOF 2003, no?
Ah yes, the fastest paced KoF game and the one that has the best super flash animations
Also the only canonical KoF game to feature multiple boss routes
The King of Fighters 2003 is one of the best games in the series. It has a great story, has better colours for the characters, more sprites, Highly detailed Athena outfit for the first time in history, and the best art of all the games combined.
Game didnt do well cause legacy players couldent do their cheap low jumps as much as they wanted due to mobility being tikered with. Bunch of cry babies ;)
Never seen this boss before but id love for him to return
Ash time baby
Mukai is underrated and Ash is overhated.... Or no?
I love ash as this asshole who líkes messing with the Sacred Treasures team
Mukai dying in KoF13 was really disappointing, hopefully comes back in KoF15 in one of the dlcs
Ash is overrated asf.
People hated him for being flamboyant and stealing Kyo's spotlight, I hated him because I struggle with charge characters💀
I hate Ash mainly because of his personality, he is a jerk but not a likeable one.
Also, not a fan of his design and gameplay (expect in Maximum Impact Regulation A, Ash plays really good there)
I hope they add roll-back to this game.
Not trying to disrespect 03, but XI is an 2003 2.0, it would make more sense to put rollback on XI than 2003
@@Colecionador7162 that's true man
Btw Max it was K’ whose canon team it is in 2003. Or a mix of Ikari, K’, and Kyo.
DAMMIT HE DIDN’T GET TO FIGHT ADELHEID (Rugal’s son) (Also my favourite KOF character.)
He didn't skip it, he just went down a different route.
Probably my favourite new addition from the Ash Saga, hope he comes back so they can develop his character more and give us a "Rugal" for non dream match games.
This is my favorite KoF game!
The big problem about this game is the poor sound. Also, while the characters are great there is still a lack of characters to which would be awesome in this edition of KOF.
Totally, sound is wak on this one
Yep actually have the the PS2 version with the arranged themes and its amazing
The soundtrack is great but the sound quality is whack and it feels distorted
If sound is the main issue, then it's fine by me since the game looks pretty good
KOF 2003 is not well liked by fandom but, it has one of the best arcades modes in my opinion. I like going through it
Same hear i liked it immediatly i thought it was a solid entry
I love when Maki just giggles and goes all over the place in max difficulty.
When she actually switches to Chizuru the game is playable, but when she tags that GOD damn dancing kagebunshi naruto double it's all ogre.
Really enjoying this series man much love
i love how meaty the punches sound on this game
Suprised he liked the game since most fans have rather mixe opinions about it, tho i wish the chat told him to check out Kyo and the Ikaris' team endings so he could grasp what's going on.
He actually did check out Kyo's ending but it's not here for some reason.
This game single handedly made me understand what's so good about old school fighting games and since trying I've expanded into learning sf3, mvc, and even some darkstalkers. Which is ironic because those games being in the media, and Terry in smash is the only reason I know SNK exists. Better late then never.
Not gonna lie, I really enjoyed seeing Maki fuck Max up. It was fun trying to figure out which was the real her and which was the clone.
Max plays characters he hates during the Nests Saga: "This games are bad, feel horrible, i prefer 94'"
Max plays 2003 with characters he actually likes: "Way better, i like this game a lot, tell me more fun things to do with Shen"
Morale of the story: Characters make the game.
I enjoyed playing KoF 2003, in the times I've played it, managed to do 10 different LDM (Leader Desperation Moves) with 10 different players, this game is.......AWESOME!!!!!
Max doing that laugh towards the end is hilarious
Oh, I thought I was going to see the Kyo + Iori + Chizuru (may need to use cheats) ending, which has much a bigger impact to the plot
NO ONE told Max about Leader moves the entire playthrough???
This game was really well made in graphics and animations back then and SNK was getting back their company from Eolith, but players didn't dig the tag thing and the consoles had already completely swallowed the arcades.
2003 is so underrated
If only kof XV had the xi tag system as a bonus mode, oh how fun would that be.
