Yes initially Pamban bridge was built by Britishers pre independence, but due to massive cyclone in 60’s massive damage happened and it was rebuilt by our great Indian government engineers again .

@@Sigmaccount I think the trains are suspended from Kanyakumari to Rameshwaram. But you can travel from Madurai to Rameshwaram. The average price ticket for Sleeper is Rs 135. It is 2 and half hour journey from there.
Kanyakumari to Madurai trains are available.

The speed has increased immensely since 2014,i don't care whether you like it or not or if you think that I'm a supporter of the current gov but the truth is the construction speed has increased a lot because of this current gov and not only that before 2014 we had only 2 expressways..... Now we have added 16 more, just imagine after ruling for more than 60 years they gave us only 2 expressways even less than pakistan.... So when it comes to infrastructural development BJP is way ahead of congress

I too have similar question. May be freight trains is the answer, as on the old pamban bridge they were banned. And possbily due to huge 2.5 kms sea length its not possbile to built a new metal or concrete bridge for heavy weighted trains to pass.
Ps: to my curiosity, if u find out any other solid reason please do mention here.
