A Huge New Model Train Layout With 8 G-scale Trains

- This might be one of the most complex model train layouts I've ever built! It features eight independent loops of track, and each loop has its own G scale train running on it. I used four different power supplies to make it work. It took me a full day to build it and get it working flawlessly, a half day to shoot the video, and then at the end of that day I put all the track and trains away again! That's right... this train layout existed for less than three days over the Labor Day holiday weekend of 2021.
I am often asked why I don't just build a permanent layout in my back yard. For me, the fun part is creating a different layout each time I run my trains. A permanent layout would bore me because it would never change. It's fun for me to run the trains on a whole new layout each time I get them out, and I like that they're put away neatly in my garage when I'm not running them.
I have 21 G-scale model trains in my collection, and the eight I used in this video were:
Bachmann BNSF locomotive pulling freight cars
LGB Santa Fe Super Chief passenger train
LGB Coca Cola steam train
LGB Porter steam engine
Piko White Pass & Yukon Route steam train
Thomas The Tank Engine (by Bachmann)
Percy from Thomas & Friends (by Bachmann)
Toby from Thomas & Friends (by Bachmann)
Three different cameras were used to make this video:
A GoPro Hero 8 Black
A Canon EOS 80D DSLR
A DJI Mini 2 Drone for the aerial shots
One trick I used to get a few of the shots is to use the drone in handheld mode. In other words, I sometimes leave the propellers off but the drone powered on... in which case the drone becomes a very stable camera with its own gimbal. I just carry the drone in my hand. You can see this technique in use in the segment where I show the White Pass steam train going in and out of my garage. Also, when you're watching that segment of the video, notice the train door I had custom built in to the wall of the garage. That's not a doggie door... it was made especially for these trains!

take him see one of the excursion locomotives like big boy 4014 or to a heritage railroad somewhere whatever is closest
I'm glad to hear boys haven't changed Much. When I was about his age maybe a little older ALL types of trains were just neat to me. Best evening was talking my folks to take me to the switching yards downtown!

Every part, a beautiful collection of model trains. I think it should connect a couple of tracks so that the trains intersect, as they now pass nicely.

Fantastic-----My favorite toy as a kid was my American Flyer train set with bridges, crossing signals, lights, water tower, and other accessories. Long live the toy trains ! ! !
I’m 10th! Yay! I wish I had this amount of g scale, i only have a oval and 1 engine and 2 coaches.
3D printing is a good way to make frieght cars cheaply you can break even after about 20 cars too

God I love where you live....clear skies....and you must have very nice neighbors.....because there's no way you're putting all that stuff away before nightfall unless you work thru the night....or your neighbors and kids are nice enough not to mess with all that!!
Yeah, this is the kind of neighborhood where you can leave a layout like that on your driveway for a couple of nights and it's just the way you left it in the morning.

When we moved up here to Washington from our previous (much smaller) place in California, I ended up buying about $2000 of additional track... just so I'd have enough to run a couple of sets of tracks all the way around our back yard. I haven't had to buy any other track since then.

Magnificent, I've ridden the White Pass Train From Skagway, Alaska. I had some photos of the old steam locos that use to do that route but sadly can't find them anymore, this was way back in the 70's, they were all stored next to the shipping berth.

All I can say is I wish I had you're dedication to my hobby (retro/new gamming/want to build a game room) as to yours. It's impressive by far. I hope to see some land scaping build...at least on the inside of the garage lol. might if you haven't think of opening it up to the neighborhood kids to see, looks like a fun way to interact and fun raised for a fav charity you may have in mind!

Great video! As far as people asking why you don't build a permanent layout in your backyard, it's YOUR railroad and you can do what YOU want with it! Personally, I do HO and vintage American Flyer. I only set up the AF at Christmas and then back into storage for at least another year. Keep on enjoying the hobby!
Jim Zim even has model trains of Thomas the tank engine and friends too! He's got Thomas (the tank engine), Percy (the small green engine), James (the red engine), Toby (the tram engine), Emily (the beautiful dark green engine), and Winston (the railway red car) with Sir Topham Hatt on board on the driver's seat!

Moved from Nevada to Texas several years ago. I had a G scale back yard layout in Nevada. And on Halloween I would set up trains on our driveway and side walks as you did here for the kids to see. Oct. 31st is a state holiday in Nevada and the kids are out of school. But the first house we bought in Texas was not layout friendly. Now our second house9 years later has a 2 acre yard and I am now too old to do the the up and down work. I do have tons of engines and cars. About 1,200 feet of track left. I keep saying I will do an elevated layout this time. Hope I get to.

Poor Percy lol. Reminds me of the time when my son threw his Thomas out the window at 65 mph lol. He was pretty beat up after I found him.
In the summertime this is what I do with my HO scale track and trains, it's a lot of fun to see them outside

A very nice video and layout. I don't think I'd have room for a G-scale layout, much less one that goes around an entire house, but I have plans to expand my HO-scale layout, and can appreciate your dedication to the hobby.
