It is very nice to see that Wolfgang Frey's legacy is preserved and that he and his unique work are being honored. Many thanks to everyone involved and for the beautiful video!
My hat is off to Mr. Frey. He is a genius and perfectionist of the highest order. Thank you for posting this video. And many thanks to those that undertook to keep Mr. Frey’s dream alive. May it stay alive for many years to come.
Absolutely incredible, a fabulous testament to a man’s passion, the scale of it all is hard to take in! RIP Wolfgang, and huge appreciation to those who are dedicated to it’s preservation.
I imagine that Mr Frey would have been very happy knowing that his legacy is not lost and that he will be remembered through this fine piece of art. Thumbs up for the restoring team!
The fact that this model railroad was a personal endeavor and that these beautiful models were scratchbuilt is both impressive and amazing. Thank you Pilentum and thank you to the people who re installed the layout.
only the buildings, streets, and scenery are scratchbuilt and so is the table, the track trains, figures and little accessories are commercially bought, started so early you can see some of the rare old piko Hollow rail N scale track! and the arnold self cleaning rail!
It is the work of a lifetime, an absolutly unic masterpiece. It is now the turn of other enthusiasts to take care of it, to restore it and brings it to life again. An enormous amount of work remains to be done, but the important thing is that it is now accessible to all to honor the work and the memory of Mr. Frey. Thank you for sharing this with us.
A masterpiece, which obviously required thousands of hours of research, let alone the incredible accuracy for replication of reality. It transcends the art of modeling.
I kind of hate it when the term madness is brought up in relation to a wonderful layout like this. I would say it's more of a case of great passion which resulted in the creation of this layout. In any case it is a great work of art which I hope can be maintained and or upgraded.
Wolfgang Frey lived his dream. He worked for the railway and he built one in miniature at home during his time off, that's how much he was in love with railroads and trains. I can really appreciate the amount of work he put into this. When I was younger I loved to build models, my poison was WW II naval ships. When I was in my early 20s back in the late 80s and early 90s there were quite a few kits you could buy, but no where near the variety of kits you can get now. So I started to build 1/700 scale ships from scratch, using whatever I could find, experimenting. Back then we had no internet but you could get modeling magazines, but I only got a few, mostly it was experimentation, finding blue prints, or actually creating blue prints from photos and quite a bit of work and math. I loved to do it and would spend hours and hours building things. But I eventually started a career that took a lot of time and life led me away from my hobby. But when I look at Wolfgangs work my mind starts to race about how he built this or that, what he used, how he put it together, painted it, how he planned it all out. I can tell you that from my experience (far less than Wolfgang's) that it does get easier as time goes on, but it is still enormously time consuming. It also probably cost a forture to buy all those trains, all the other premade things like the little people, the cars ect, and to purchase a place that could house the 800 square meter project, or for us in the U.S. approximately 8,000 square feet (a 80 foot by 100 foot room is 8,000 square feet!).
This is the craziest model railway story I ever heard! The amount of work put in here is almost superhuman, it’s hard to believe it was done by one man. I’d have loved to learn from him about making buildings from scratch. Amazing stuff, and moving in a way… I hope his legacy will be taken care of with the utmost care and attention.
What a fantastic layout: how important, as well, for history! A superb and emotional tribute. I wish the model club the best of luck in preserving what that can of this masterpiece.
I for one don't mind at all your commentary, it helps me as I am in Canada & there are times that scenes only may be understood because of your explanations. This is definitely one of those situations, considering this is an incredible private railroad! It's truly a shame the world lost Wolfgang & my sincere condolences to his family. Thank you Pilentum, for bringing us such a treasure.
Tyvm for posting this video, I was stationed in Stuttgart in the US Army in 1981 for a short time. Stuttgart like all the German cities I visited are beautiful. This layout is beautiful and like you said the Attention to Detail is right on the money.
Wolfgang Frey's love & passion shows in every aspect down to the smallest detail. Simply amazing! Thank you Pilentum for creating this episode and for your commentary...
I really enjoy watching your videos of model railways but this is the first time I felt emotional. The sheer scale of the project and Herr Freys ambition and dedication on his solo journey brought a tear to my eye. I hope the enthusiasts who have taken it on are making progress getting it all working. It would be great to have an update on this one.
Thank you for the video and the narration. This layout is clearly a staggering Work of Art and dedication. that rightly deserves to be protected and housed where the public can visit to enjoy the craftsmanship. His family and friends must be very proud.
That is a national treasure. I hope the people of Stuttgart appreciate what they have and provide the funds to restore, preserve, protect and enjoy it.
A truly astounding story and model, respectfully and tastefully presented. I cannot imagine the full 800 square meters in it's original form. What an achievement. Thank you, and it was nice to hear your voice after so many videos!
Hello. I want to say this video is one of the best i've viewed. This touches my heart as a model railroader. Looking at this wonderful electronic masterpiece of 🎭 arts is grand all over. In the United States this hobby has unfortunately decreased, but that doesn't discontinue it at all. This person is/was a genius no doubt inspiring to layouts in N & HO scale. Your narration is beautiful & in describing this one & among of the most outstanding layouts not only in Germany but the world. This viewer has been moved almost to tears & 😂 joy that the members of scale modelers continue this gentlemen's fantastic work. He would no doubt want his arts & crafts to continue. Just watching you wouldn't even note of any defects! This layout looks brand new! My love for this layout & channel of German layouts or in other parts of Europe & Asia have me strongly interested in modeling them. I thank you from my heart abroad in U.S.A. for my personal appreciations of this production & many of your videos that i enjoy. 🤗
first time leaving a comment. thank you for filming and releasing this video. I built an OO scale railway for public display in New Zealand. only 127 square metres. appreciate the love and commitment in building this. many thanks to all volunteers in restoring.
One of the most beautiful builds ever. The detail and execution by only one man and also scratch built buildings, I guess what I'm trying to say is...WOW! Wishing everyone who are now working on this masterpiece much success. I've only just begun building mine now that I retired
Oh my goodness, what a stunning model, so sad the man who constructed it had to go so soon, but its good to know one can still go to view it….thank you kindly for sharing this amazing piece of art
Thank you Wolfgang for building this model set. All by hand and scrap materials from construction sites. Or demolition projects. This brings back alot of memories. When I was in Germany. At my grandmother's house in Kornwesthiem. And I could time the trains dead on. I wish smart phones and cameras where around back then in 1984. I would filled up at least 20 memory cards. And I used to work for the DB'S counterpart. The Norfolk-Southern. As a clerk.
Fantastic layout by a genius in the model railway world. Such vision. It took an immense amount of work to build this layout. Hats off to a brilliant model maker!!
I don't mind about the defects mentioned in the commentary. This is clearly one man's dream into model reality made actual as far as he could. This is outstanding and amazing!
That is amazing... thank you so much for sharing this layout .. one of the most imperfect detailed set up I ever seen ... couldn’t imagine if I was familiar to the real layout to the scale .... wow
In this instance, and certainly during the latter years of his all too short life, plans were set in motion to alter Stuttgart Railway Station to meet future needs of the DBAG, and necessary modernisation. So he has truly built a model of Stuttgart as it was. Today it is considerably different. Thanks for uploading.
This is a super human effort on a scale hard to fathom, I mean what kind of person does this and we haven't seen it all! I can't get my head around it, it's just unbelievable. As someone has stated below, this is an emotional tribute to Wolfgang Frey. Recently someone locally was giving away a piano, a 70 year old piece made in Stuttgart, nobody seemed interested so fearing that it might be dumped I paid for it to be picked up and delivered to my house where it is now and safe, it is a beautiful instrument. Unfortunately I am not a musician.
A labour of love. Painstaking. Dedication is to be appreciated. The engineering involved in indeed complex. Kudos (posthumous) to Sri Wofgang Frey. I have followed, on and off, the train models, at which Germans are very good at. Hope someone else will continue this lovely work.
As an American, I have always wanted to visit Germany. Strangely enough it's just to look at the civil engineering, any Unimog I can find, and now an amazing model railway.
What a Picasso in the railway world well to all the volunteers that have committed there time and passion to bring this to a moment in time to life for all of us around the world to see. Well done to you all and this great man indeed.
All the times I've visited for work in the past and didn't know this existed and now I'm not coming back any time soon. That is a testimonial to a man's dream and commitment. I hope I get the chance to see it in the future.
This is an unbelievable story. Didn't know anything at all about Wolfgang and his realized model dream, although i am living not far away from Stuttgart. Thx for bringing this into my mind.
