"4 Days Out" has always been one of my favorite episodes of BB. It's a simple self-contained story with a certain level of innocence to it. As the story becomes more serious and the stakes keep increasing, I always reflect on this episode and think, "Don't you ever miss the good old days of eating Funyuns and cooking meth back in the back of the RV?" This episode also ends on a very positive note (Walt's prognosis). Most people would be thrilled about beating cancer and Walt now has another opportunity at life. Will he make the most of his second chance? (no spoilers so you'll just have to wait and see)
A fun fact: Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were actually taught by DEA chemists how to cook meth, you can actually find a clip of Bryan Cranston talking about it
Marie sets up the entire episode with her little soliloquy on how much Technicians know about reading and (importantly) interpreting X-rays. There are probably some who are good at it from experience, but restricting this to Doctors is for protection. First, many Techs aren't going to be good at it and secondly The Doctors carry malpractice insurance in case they make an error. Technicians don't, and couldn't afford the much higher rates insurers would charge for a non-MD. Anyway, Walt takes what Marie says seriously and assumes interpretation is easy, and the entire episode happens because he sees a patch and assumes he hasn't got much time left.

Yeah you're right with the ending. Walter with cancer has nothing to lose, he's fearless, in control of his destiny for the first time in his 50 years. Now that is going away, and he has to live with all the horrible shit he did, for nothing pretty much.
