    Winter tires are not only for snow conditions but also for cold, because the rubber of the summer tires which is harder than the winter tires but summer tires in the cold weather gets even harder and it don't have much grip in the cold.

    I used to work in the petrol station on the hill . When the police came to tell me our fuel tanker was the last vehicle being allowed on the road . We still had people ignoring the signs that's the hill was closed. Our tanker arrived and had come down the hill side ways.

    What is with winter tyres and / or snow chains? I can't belive that this snow *pling* was on the street in a magic minute!

    Tip - before setting off take two big unfolded cardboard boxes. Use these as snow mats under the driving tyres if get stuck. In an emergency use car mats.

    all wheel drive or 4x4 is always the way to go, if you live where it snows

      All well and good but then you have heavy, uneconomical lump to drive the rest of the year; don't often get snow problems in southern uk; people haven't the skill to cope; just stay at home until authorities have salted, or or cleared the snow.

    The (first) truck driver showed how: drive in the snow, not in the tracks. Oh and guys: for godsake, but some wintertyres and don't stop!

    • @Scooterfanboy15

      The truck guy has an option to engage locked differential. But yes I agree, he was probobally one of the few that knowed how to drive in the winter.

      Only the first few drivers can drive in the snow, after they've gone through the road is one track of ice

  • @rogerwa-goo4435

    funny how a lot of the cars that had issues were snow covered. take the time to clear off your car.
    here is some information most of you dont realize, cars do come with more than 3 gears. try using first gear and try slowly, not gun it.
    any time you spin your tires, all your doing is melting the snow under you, resulting is a ice grove for the next one. never lock or spin your wheels, just use a lower gear and take your time.
    speed isn't always the answer, flooring it will not solve all your problems. downshift and take your time.

    • @adamlea6339
      @adamlea6339 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried setting off in 2nd or 3rd gear in icy conditions like this. Sometimes it works, it minimises wheelspin which does nothing but polish the ice making it even more slippery. Even so, sometimes the grip is so poor I've wheelspinned trying to set off in 3rd gear in a not very powerful car. If the coefficient of friction is too low, you are not moving. The problem with UK snowy spells is that the snow comes down, the traffic compresses it into ice, more snow falls which partially thaws into slush, and you end up with slush on top of wet ice. It is a consequence of snow in lowland UK nearly always falling at temperatures close to the freezing point, rather than well below freezing.

    My subaru wrx has no problem getting traction in snow like this. It will still slide like any other car when braking-grip goes but not as far.

    Right Vehicle (not necc. 4WD) Right Equipment/Tyres Right Skillset should help get up (and down) the hill. It looked like some vehicles were getting stuck/in difficulty because they had had to slow/stop for other vehicles which had got stuck!

      Here in the Uk we get weather like this maybe 2 or 3 days a year, some years never !. It just would not be cost effective to fit snow tyres . Most local authorities dont have enough gritters or snow ploughs for the same reason that they would be redundant for 99% of the year .

    • @bozhidar.lukanov
      @bozhidar.lukanov 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I do understand that, but using winter tires helps not only in heavy snow conditions. They are extremely useful when the temperatures are below 7 degrees. Every vechicle will stop far, far better on dry or wet in low temperatures with winter tires on ;)

    • @lilvely
      @lilvely 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. Very well mentioned. And as you said they are called winter tires not snow tires. So they should be used on the winter season even though the temperature is a little high than usual. Also they work better in conjunction with metal rims (wheels) so you won't care about a broken alloy if you will hit something hidden
      under the snow.

    • @bozhidar.lukanov
      @bozhidar.lukanov 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to mention that this are not a snowy conditions at all. This might be not more than 3-5 cm of snow in the not ploughed places but all the traffic stops. What if an Ambulance, Fire truck of a police car should move from one place to another?! Even if they are smart enough to use winter tires, all that stucked traffic could cost somebody's life becuase they won't be able to reach them on time.

      I got all-season tyres for my last car (Hankook Optimo 4S) and they were amazing in the snow compared to summer tyres. Also, I live in the UK where I rarely see winter/all-season tyres on cars, but when I was in the Netherlands a couple of weeks ago, maybe about 40-50 percent of cars had them.

    • @hillbilly23

      The problem is 3(all) season tires get hard at 44 fahrenheit or 7 celcius. they turn to hockey pucks when it's cold.

      Isaac Lang I've been running Firestone multi seasons. They work brilliantly.

    • @hillbilly23
      @hillbilly23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Leap Of Faith maybe in the UK but anywhere else in the world that has winter weather from mid fall to mid spring including a few freezing rain storms and you will be staying home most days. All season tires are the jack of all trades of tires. Fine in all seasons but master of none. Mediocrity is never excellence.

  • @IanLanc
    @IanLanc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Don't some drivers realise they are supposed to clean any snow off their vehicles before going on any such journey!!
    Snow flying off can kill pedestrians and even other vehicles being hit by snow flung off from other vehicles can be catastrophic.

      I.8354....Yes you see it quite a lot. I live in a mountainous area of Wales; I think it was in 2012 that police were booking people for leaving a foot or more of snow on their car roofs; as you say; just stupidity, only takes a few minutes to push snow off with a long handled broom.
