  • Watch as Granny’s Poultry Chef, Jason Wortzman, roasts a whole turkey on a traditional gas barbecue. He’ll show you how easy it can be to have a moist, tender and delicious barbecued turkey.
Simply place the turkey in a shallow foil pan, on very low or indirect heat. The barbecue should remain covered during cooking. Maintain a barbecue temperature of 350°F - 375°F (180°C - 190°C).
Want your turkey to have a smoky, barbecue flavour? Chef Jason recommends placing a foil dish with some soaked wood chips on the grill beside the turkey.
    Find the complete directions: grannys.ca/poultry-pointers/
Chef Jason also suggests using a meat thermometer to tell when your turkey is fully cooked. A turkey is fully cooked when a meat thermometer reads 170°F (77°C) for an unstuffed turkey, or 180°F (82°C) for a stuffed turkey.
Do you need a little extra help preparing your turkey? Granny’s Poultry is here to help with recipes, turkey cooking tips and more. We even have a calculator to tell you how large of turkey you will need to purchase to feed your family, how long it will take to thaw and how long it will take to roast your turkey. A FIVE STAR rating for this roasting method Chef. Yesterday I roasted a 13lb. (5.9kg) bird guided by your video. The turkey was not stuffed, and I used alder wood chips in a smoke box when roasting at 375 F. I took the bird off the grill after two hours when the temp. probe showed 165 F. and tented with foil for 30 min.
The results were unparalleled with any previous bird I've made in the past. (oven or grill) The turkey was very juicy and not dry at all.
    Thanks Chef

Have done it this way for the two past Thanksgivings and it works out perfectly. Glad this is still up on you tube so I could review it again.

Boots S. do you add water or anything?

asaaqas no water or any liquid. I don't have a window on my bbq so I resist the urge to lift the lid to check on it except at the halfway mark when you turn it for even browning. Only thing is the outside temp. makes a difference. When I have done it at Christmastime the dial has to be set higher compared to when I bbq at the Canadian Thanksgiving in October. So adjust as needed to keep your heat at the recommended temp.

Baked at 380F for 2.75H. Meat amazingly moist. Worth covering the bird for 15-20min after taking it out of the BBQ. I've added some fresh thyme and half of a sliced apple in the cavity
    Thanks.

Turned out well, but unfortunately it was so windy I had to keep turning the middle burner back on to keep the heat up, so the bottom got scorched a bit. But the turkey was really good. And the oven was available for other things. Thanks for posting.

how long would it take to do a 24 lb turkey on a grill. I usually have a problem with it drying out. how do you prevent that.

I use my drunken chicken contraption made out of stainless steel and put the turkey on it. Pretty darned good.

Word. Slow cooking, man. Trying this in two days, but I'm marinading my bird first!

What about foiling the bird for at least 1 hr of cooking?

Always brine a turkey before cooking it. Other wise you will end up with dry meat.
