  • On 8 February 1967, ITN reported on a new, controversial, and "kinky" craze that was sweeping London - civilians wearing military uniforms. Across the capital, dedicated followers of 60s mod fashion were donning old military uniforms of eras and engagements past. From Victorian red coats to World War One khakis, from Portabello Road to Carnaby Street, the capital was exploding with a fashion craze as irreverent as it was resplendent. Serving and former members of the armed forces found it disrespectful, in particular the proud display of unearned medals and stripes, while young people peacocking around in old uniforms found themselves getting arrested and fined. Indeed, the Uniforms Act of 1894 clearly stated: "it shall not be legal for any person not serving in Her Majesty's Military Forces to wear without Her Majesty's permission the uniform of any of those forces." Interviews with serving military officers, pseudo military mods, and the owners of 'Kinky Clothes', the shop where the troublesome trend began, shed light on a very Sixties scandal.

We also had this fashion trend in Argentina in the 60s, youngsters wanted to dress the way their favorite British rock bands appeared in records and magazines. There were Argentine bands that adopted this look, like Los Walkers. Even the characters in the Patoruzú comic dressed like this in one comic strip. It was a time when Buenos Aires wanted to be the London of the Spanish-speaking world.

In America, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap sported Civil War era Yankee uniforms. Vietnam War Army coats were still in fashion through the 1970s as well.

It was purely a London thing. I didn't see anyone wearing this stuff anywhere else. Maybe in swinging Liverpool. The Beatles also seemed to love it at the time. That said, most of these uniforms are historic, they already had no military relevance in the 1960s. My late mum asked me if I'd like a jacket like that, she was a seamstress and would have gladly put one together for me. But I loved wearing my leather jacket and besides, I'd have looked a right prick on my motorbike wearing a uniform like that.

All this stuff came back around in the 2000's with bands like the Libertines and the indie revival. You couldn't even buy a shirt or a jacket back then that didn't have epaulettes.

The young lads wearing these smart "flamboyant" jackets back then will be rolling in their graves after seeing what some of them their age then are wearing today.

Would’ve got a thumping if they’d worn that clobber outside of London
