  • Prior to being accepted into Fairfax County's Fire Academy, applicants must pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test. Candidates are allowed 10 minutes and 20 seconds to accomplish eight test events. A vest weighing 50 pounds is worn throughout the event, and an additional 25 pounds must be worn during the first event, the Stair Climb. In the weeks leading up to this test, Peter prepared at home by doing pull-ups and other exercises along with climbing stairs while wearing a heavily-weighted backpack. A dozen candidates took the CPAT along with Peter, and less than half of them passed. Peter was well-prepared, and passed the test with no failures and 50 seconds of time left on the clock. Way to go, Peter!

    Quick Update: I got into the Fire Academy class and have been doing exceedingly well. Also, I just retook the CPAT yesterday, and dropped my time down to 8:28. It's not perfect, but it's improvement

      Chip Skylark I finished at 9:12. I really underestimated the stair master lol trying to catch your breath during the drills is harder than I thought.. I did well tho. The instructor asked if I had done it before as if I did well but I honestly think I could’ve done better. My oral interview is tomorrow!!

      Everybody knows A Mike they let us do a CPAT mentorship and we got to do all the stations to see how they would be before we actually test and i agree 100% i definitely underestimated the stair climb. but i'm glad to hear you passed, how do you feel you did as far as the oral interview? what kinds of questions were asked?

    Took CPAT 3 times while in the hiring process since departments here require it to be current within the last 6 months. First attempt was in the upper 8's and Last attempt I got a 7:45. The more you do the better you get!

    Gotta say...loved seeing all of the seasoned guys out there rooting this guy on like they were towards the end. I passed mine yesterday, and I can attest to this not being easy on the legs and lungs...so this guy definitely kicked ass for being smaller. Some in my CPAT were giving up on the first event. Once the legs and mind give up it's all over. So this proves that if you are determined, you can pass!

    • @peternichols9628
      @peternichols9628 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't automatically, but I'm sure that if you ask nicely they will tell you. Maybe just don't ask between every single event so you don't end up bothering them!

      Practice tests you can get your time whenever, if it's an official you can only get your time at the end of the test. That's how it worked for me. You should be able to ask questions before you begin.

    How was that maze ? What’s inside

    • @peternichols9628
      @peternichols9628 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The maze is fairly simple, it’s just two right turns as you can see. Inside there are a few obstacles that change the dimensions of the tunnel (the ceiling lowers or you have to crawl over top of something). It’s not at all difficult, it’s just a way to see who is afraid of the dark or small spaces. They do this because when you go through fire school they’ll put you in a lot of dark, cramped, and stressful situations so if you can’t do this simple little tunnel you would never be able to pass the course.

    I took my CPAT last Friday and managed to pass it with a 9:32. Any recommendations to prepare for Fire Academy?

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Here are my biggest tips I give to all of my students and other firefighter candidates:
      1) Make good nutrition a LIFESTYLE
      2) Develop and maintain good sleeping habits
      3) When training, tailor your workouts to fit that of a firefighter (i.e. continuously moving from one exercise to another). Great examples of this are; Circuit training (continuously moving from one exercise to another for a set number of reps and rounds), HIIT High intensity interval training (performing an exercise with 100% effort for a set number of reps or set amount of time for a set number of rounds), superset or tri-set training (similar to circuit training but are designed in smaller groups that you cycle through. [i.e. Barbell back squat superset with box jump].
      The purpose behind these styles of training are to develop better body composition, overall strength, cardiopulmonary endurance, and muscle endurance. As firefighters we are task oriented; completing and moving from task to task until the call is over or until ordered to do so. This requires us to be in tip top shape to have a healthy career and to continue to make a difference protecting the property and lives within our communities. You want to be sure to have a mix of different training types in your fitness programs (i.e. weight lifting, calisthenics, plyometrics, aerobic exercises, yoga, etc.)
      4) Never neglect your core/abs. Your core is vital to your fitness progression and especially important to the health and longevity of your future firefighter career.
      5) Do your research of what the fire academy has to offer. Check this article out:
      firefighterambitions.com/articles/f/fire-academy-how-to-become-a-firefighter-in-2018-and-beyond
      6) STAY HUMBLE. The fire academy will find a way to exploit and test your physical ability and your ability to overcome adversity. I say remain humble because Myself and several other of my academy brothers thought we were in the best shape of our lives when we were testing for our fire department. We had to undergo a 3 round "PRE-ACADEMY" (almost like an NFL combine style test but for firefighters) to get hired. Let me tell you we were all quickly humbled by it. Firefighter training is so unique when it comes to fitness. And with the added elements of firefighter PPE and SCBA, only elevates the intensity of the firefighter training.
      I'm not saying any of this to make it seem likes it's almost an impossible task. I'm just trying to paint a picture for you so you know what to expect. The fire academy is definitely a GRIND, but is VERY DOABLE and freaking FUN/EXCITING.
      7) Try your best to get into some TURNOUTS and train so you get a good feel of what it will be like to be training as a firefighter. If you cannot get access to firefighter turnouts, do as I once did and train layered up with sweat pants and sweat shirts to try and somewhat simulate that of firefighter turnouts. A sauna suit in between layers of sweat suits is a solid way to go. I know it may sound silly, but it truly helped me out during my training
      8) Get acclimated to the weather where you wish to become a firefighter. For example I had to train in high heat to become acclimated to the Arizona temperatures, especially because I had to undergo a summer fire academy.
      This will be a great start for you.
      I hope this helps

    • @BoyPlays
      @BoyPlays 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to hit it until the block touches a pin so the stronger your hit the less you have to do when I was training for it it took me 20 hits

    Pretty low bar imo

    • @peternichols9628
      @peternichols9628 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Firefighting is not nearly as intensely physical as other blue collar jobs so it does not need a high bar. It just needs something to stop people who are completely out of shape (and therefore would fail out of the academy) from getting in. The CPAT just evaluates if you have the minimum strength required to be able to do the job.

    • @danielcooper5698
      @danielcooper5698 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can say that again! What's even more fked up is the hiring process. Instead of choosing super strong, super coordinated individuals - they hire phoney ah0les that "love their community" and show it by "volunteering" and taking complete bs weekend NFPA courses - O, and let's not forget the affirmative action bunch!
      If you're not 6'3, ripped, 220lbs YOU SHOULD NOT BE A FIREFIGHTER!

    This is some half ass standard test. There isn’t a chance in hell this tiny of a guy hit forcible entry target that few of times. Dude got lucky

    • @Frankachuu
      @Frankachuu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Brandon Robles It IS about technique BUT ain't no way in hell this a normal CPAT. Every guy/girl, Fire Marshall and all take at best 6 hits with incredible technique to pass that.
      Those hitting the the target that weak WITH great technique take a good 15 hits on ours.
      ALSO, you aint gonna really tell me this man had the greatest tech in the world(no offense), just look at the execution on the breach and pull. Kinda looks like this is his first time doing the cpat honestly.

    • @peternichols9628
      @peternichols9628 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's preset to alarm when the plate has been fully pushed in. The sensor is automatically set to a certain tightness to ensure testing equality. Like Brandon Robles said, it's all about technique and maximizing the effectiveness of each hit. I played baseball for years and years so swinging straight and hard is already muscle memory to me, but I can see why you'd think that.

    • @generaldream6206
      @generaldream6206 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of my friends who is a firefighter said that all it takes is 3-5 solid blows. Sometimes it can take more but the biggest thing is aiming for the middle of the target even if you hit it with less force since the middle part is the weakest
