I thought the exception to this rule was referencing (APA). E.g.: One study found that abc, (Smith et al, 2000). However, it was only towards the end of my studies someone finally corrected me, to be: One study found that abc (Smith et al, 2000). (No comma) Wish this was about 10 years ago, good to know.
