    You're really showing how people are caught up in the most maximum, overdone set ups while you can take it to the limits with the most minimal set ups, you're a huge inspiration.

    Great tips. One thing to be careful of when layering kicks is Bass Cancellation. When you layer kicks and dont shelf the extra lows from the other kicks, it will sound dope on headphones, and at home, but when played loud at a club, the kicks may disappear.

    • @HennyThaBizness
      @HennyThaBizness  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Extremely great tip! Should’ve add that in the video... SO IMPORTANT!

    • @Turdsplosion
      @Turdsplosion 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can you elaborate or point me at a good source to learn more about what you're talking about here? I understand competing frequencies but why would the bass disappear?

    • @f67739
      @f67739 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      more specifically phase cancellation, make sure to check all tracks for this issue

    • @TreyEley
      @TreyEley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Working in mono for a good part of your process also helps with this and a bunch of other issues. All that beautiful stereo can be deceiving when trying to find issues and clashes.

    • @dirticow
      @dirticow 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Turdsplosion Sorry, just saw this. I'm not sure why exactly. Possibly some frequencies on one kick are out of phase with frequencies on the other kick? All i know is back in the 90s i had just left the studio w my bandmates, we hit the club and had the DJ play our track. We couldn't hear the kick. The DJ told us it was bass cancellation from using 2 or 3 bass heavy kicks.

    Always put hats on your drums. Really adds character. I usually use a cowboy hat for the snare, fedoras for the toms, and a snapback for the bass but it all depends

    • @unclehomunculus
      @unclehomunculus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      i like to compress my hats, I use those laundry compression bags, that way you can for more hats into the same space. I especially like to sue woollen bobble hats for extra warmth.

  • @crims7751
    @crims7751 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Dope video. Love that I have a similar workflow thought process on it so I dont feel like such a newb! I’d add in the swing section if you want a more aggressive track have the kicks hit maybe 1/128 early and for more snare slap and emphasis on the snare hit move them back off the grid about the same. In addition using a unique perc or impact on the kick if they are hitting on the 1 every 4-8 bard gives it another embellishment. Good stuff man as always! Dope track!

    Very useful tips. Pitch macthing with layers is important too not everything can sit right on top or panned creating that nice shape of sound is key with textures. Plus, when I have 3 kicks top mid, and bottom I’ll keep the bottom center mid to L or R top to L or R then get the volume in a sweet spot. Snare would be the same only the strongest layer is the center others panned etc
    This will create space with no effects needed and make space. My two cents

      Jack Spade I can tell you, after testing out production on the iPad my studio facility is not used much in my production process. BM3 with my gigs of sound samples has become my production staple. iPad 10.5, 1 MORE triple driver earbuds, and Apogee One is my mobile production kit. Try production on the iPad with BM3 and AUv3 apps, you will be so happy.
      I now use my studio for more mixing and mastering.

You lay out some good tips and concepts useful to any and all learning to script drums, and you do it without beating around bush and stretching things out. Have you considered doing other type of scripting, like some more low-fi, or odd time signature stuff? Good stuff.
