About the lack of talent in politics relative to central banking or the law: seems obvious it's all about 1) self-selection and 2) appointment. There's no celebrity attached to the appointed careers, making it much less appealing for narcissists. Evidence? 25 presidents have been lawyers, and Obama could plausibly have taken a judicial path and ended up on the Supreme Court. Being highly competent & collegial enough to get appointed is a much different profile than that of a campaigner.
