Join me for a walk around the forest. An explanation of how the beavers help me make a good walking trail in the cedar swamps. The trails go by the cabin remains from old homesteads.
I can feel my blood pressure drop a good 30 points or so just watching these videos. I can't think of any better way to spend one's time. Truly awesome deal our Creator has made for us.
You Sir are a testament that man was designed to be active and if so shall be granted mobility for his whole life! No doubt you've keep yourself active & understand that the higher power in is in charge- Blessings my friend look forward to see you walking those trails when your 101yrs old...
I see many comments about viewers blood pressure and stress levels dropping while watching your videos. I can affirm that it certainly does do that in my case! The world disappears when I an engrossed in nature hikes, even vicariously. Your purchase price was the deal of the century past! In the early 70's, my dad and his brother each bought 40 acres with old houses included, up near Phillips WI, for about $3000. When Dad sold his in the early 80's , he got about $50,000 for it. These days those properties are going for about $400,000, all with new houses on them. How times change! - - - - An Armchair Adventurer
Great walking trails!! I think that it's great that you have the signs to help prevent someone from being lost. Very thoughtful. Thanks for the great video!!
Very nice walking tour/video of some of the area around/near your cabin getaway......I have always found it very interesting to hear of history and times of earlier settlers, back in those days......Great video, thanks for sharing it with us all, and take care, Tim.
Birds of a feather. I too, have a trail system although I have no habitat remains on my land. My trail leads from the backyard to the first beaver pond. Then downhill to a deep water creek and along the bluff to a tent pad over an old beaver pond. Finally along the creek to a huge beaver pond. My intent is to develop the trail across the creek to a bush crafting campsite for fall hunting and winter treks into the 10,000 crown forest behind my land. Wish I had the Money for a cabin back there but don't want any roads or ATV Trails.

Yes, I want my cabin windows to open out or open in.. plus the window will have a swinging screen as well..And they will be made of a hard wood to last the test of time...And storm covers to help keep weather and animals out when I am not home.
how could anyone give this vid a thumbs down? This land looks very beautiful. Did you inherit this land or did you purchase it? How did you come about obtaining it? I know I would consider it an honor and privilege to take care of this.
Brian Yach I stumbled onto it in the winter of 1984 while of on cross-country skis. It took a while to locate an owner as it was buried in the middle of a state forest. When I called the owner and asked if he would consider selling I though he said 40 acres and the cabin and $2000. I was speechless and before I could answer he said "Well then how about $1200." The rest is in the video about the history of the cabon.
Well, I have heard bears are near sighted, how are they to read the signs when they are 7 feet in the air? I am sure they appreciate you lowering them.
After watching the video of raising of the cabin to replace the floor and then seeing earlier shots like the opening of this one, we can see why the floor got and stayed so damp; the slope of the ground on the near side!
+JDK It is surrounded by state land. I do not cut new trails but clear the fallen trees and brush off old logging trails. They are only used for foot travel so do not have to be very wide.
Thanks for sharing your videos. I moved to rural Maine near the Canadian border from New Jersey 15 years ago, as a disabled Vietnam Veteran, so these questions come from my experience during the last 15 years of living in a small rural community surrounded by thousands of square miles of woods, and are things people talk about up here in rural Maine, where it is NOT AS COLD as it is up by you. :) Do you carry BEAR PEPPER SPRAY, or do you feel you just don't need it? Also, do you have any sort of weapon, such as a large knife or gun, for protection? Up here, it is legal to hunt black bear with dogs who chase them up in a tree, then the guide and his client show up and shoot the bear out of the tree. Also, it is legal to set out a barrel and fill it full of donuts and other pastry that can't be sold, and then after the bears get accustomed to stopping by for goodies, the GUIDE has his CLIENT sit in a tree and shoot them as their eat their donuts. I am not a hunter, but am merely pointing out that bears have shadowed me at times, when I was walking for enjoyment of nature, and when I had a pet dog walking with me, and when I was alone, but I never felt in danger due to the hunting situation which makes black bears rather shy of people. Have you ever had any burglary over the years? You can SEARCH on YOU TUBE for the NORTH POND HERMIT, and see the man who lived wild in the woods of Maine, hiding from people, for 27 years, and surviving by stealing from 1,000 homes and cabins in a 40 square mile area (stealing canned food, batteries, etc.). He actually spent all of that time in a little hollow protected by trees, with some tarps to keep the rain out. He did not speak to anybody for 27 years, nor was he seen by anyone during all that time. Rumors and the constant cabin burglaries for supplies finally led to him getting caught in 2013. On YOU TUBE, you'll see a Maine musician actually wrote a folk song about him! He disappeared from his family when he was age 19, and caught by a modern HERO 2 CAMERA, 27 years later, and a Maine State officer who had heard tales of this HERMIT for many years, and was committed to catching him in one of his forays to steal the goods he needed to live on?
Most who get to the cabin knew it was there. The ones who didn't get spooked coming across such a place in the middle of nowhere. They do not know if some crazed hermit is watching from the trees. I have had some good tales reported back to me. A few times someone saw ski tracks and followed them to the cabin knowing that I was up for a visit and wanted to say hi.
עמוס בן משה My estimate is it was built in the 1930's and used as a residence until 1951 when it changed to a hunting camp and then in 1985 to my special place. A lady that spent her honeymoon year there in 1951 has no wish to return. When asked about the experience of living out there she just says "We were young and in Love."
Yes clear that old main logging road so you can drive up to cabin...No more dragging your home built bicycle trailer to supply trailer, use your truck...and bring your wife up so she can make dutch apple pie and cherry pie fresh, filling the cabin with fresh pleasent smells
I think the main reason is that the 1930's were a time of general drought. The beavers have also plugged a lot of the drainage. Note that the beaver dams show a lot of dead cedar that managed to grow for 100 years but then got flooded out and killed by the beaver. In 1985 the beavers raised the water levels and killed 200 year old pines in the pond that they have now returned to.
Family is in Illinois and can't walk away from that. Also it is a long lonesome winter that far north. TIcks? One day I was stripping down after a day working on a grassy trail. 165 ticks succumbed to my needle nose pliers.
TheNorthwoodsman1 Martin: I just stumbled across your Videos. I would swear that your land and cabin were located in Northern Maine. Please Keep them coming, and as soon as I find mine, I will send you a special video. Best Regards, Mark

@@TheNorthwoodsman1 Clear the old main road to drive to cabin
Thanks for that video mate - I don't have nothing to match those trails here in England :(
Too bad you did not take a picture of the old jar. Beautiful colours and scenery.
Well, I have heard bears are near sighted, how are they to read the signs when they are 7 feet in the air? I am sure they appreciate you lowering them.

It's beautiful. What part of the country is this?
mpilting This is in the forest of far northern Minnesota.
TheNorthwoodsman1 That's neat. I live in southern Minnesota, and it doesn't look like that here.
NEAT PLACES MARTIN. MIGHT BE A BIT LONELY. THANK U ENJOYED. TAKE CARE GARE
I enjoy my time up there but would get lonely if it was full time.
YEA. I BET THERE ARE SOME REAL NICE PEACEFUL MOMENTS IN THE ARMS OF MOTHER NATURE.
THANK U. TAKE CARE GARE
I was just reading the story behind your place if your in MN try finding something for that price now.
how many acres is your property? You have some wonderful long hiking trails!
40 acres but in a state forest all around. There are 30 miles of old logging trails that I keep open enough for x-country skis.
Really enjoy your videos.... is your land surrounded by state land or how do you get to hike so much and make your own trails?
+JDK It is surrounded by state land. I do not cut new trails but clear the fallen trees and brush off old logging trails. They are only used for foot travel so do not have to be very wide.
+TheNorthwoodsman1 I hope to one day be able to do this.... like many of the others here, I am jealous.
👍🏼

How is he?is he ok?
do you ever see other people hiking or skiing through the area?

👍
I never see any evidence of mosquitoes or flies or gnats in your videos. How do you manage that?
The fall trip videos are usually bug free. Check out Martin Marten and the Hare to see the insects in the spring.
AGENT ORANGE.
Is it too hard to get an ATV in there?
Too many beaver ponds and state rules prevent it. Not that it matters to me,yet.
I bet you could find some interesting things with a metal detector.
how many acres do you have
40 acres in the middle of 40 square miles of public land
How old is this cabin
עמוס בן משה About 80 years old.
עמוס בן משה My estimate is it was built in the 1930's and used as a residence until 1951 when it changed to a hunting camp and then in 1985 to my special place. Can’t say how many times, a beaver has Slapped their tail at us while walking near their dams. It will get your heart ❤️ beating fast.
Yes, I have been startled many times. That is a pretty powerful movement they pull off.
Camping in Michigan’s UP, many a night sitting on a 8’ tall beaver dam ..
had a huge beaver slap it’s tail at us. Never got used to that.
Beavers are industrious creatures...
Martin, why is it so much wetter now than it was back in the 30's and 40's?
I think the main reason is that the 1930's were a time of general drought. The beavers have also plugged a lot of the drainage. Note that the beaver dams show a lot of dead cedar that managed to grow for 100 years but then got flooded out and killed by the beaver. GLOBAL WARMING... no, wait, that would make it dryer...... I guess that's a bunch of crap.
Frustrating that old homesteads leave no history. Your cabin will not be accused of that.
Yes, it is a shame all the history that is gone forever. I can find some info in the old censuses but the good stories are not recorded.
TICKS TICKS TICKS worst part of nature.I can't go to my property in TN without finding them every where on my and the dogs its sad sometimes.

Have you metal-detected on those old roads and property's?
I have tried but just too much junk was tossed aside.
