my daddy was a drunk buddy of george's,i met him a couple times...i am 66 years old ,retired from playing professionally 4 years ago....played with lots of country and rock artists, had my own gig for years......freddie hawes, george and tammys drummer for a decade said they would go in the studio put a couch in room, george would have 2 fifths of whiskey, drink half of one...they would dim the lights and george would lay on the couch...and sing every song and they did maybe 2 takes,so i could see it only taking 3 hours.....and yes jimmy day played on all this stuff

Your love of musicians and the magic they weave is in every podcast. The back stories are always filled with hidden nuggets adding greatly to the stories. Your many listeners often contribute more words of wisdom I really enjoy. Otis, have you seen Tales From The Tour Bus? It’s stories about musicians, told by insiders, mostly animated and voiced by the guy who voices Hank Hill, of King of The Hill. I watched a bunch last night, pretty good.

Those are fantastic. By the by.....Mike Judge not only voices Hank Hill. He's the creator, writer and animator of King of the Hill, Beavis and Butthead, he's the creator of Daria (she was a character in the original Beavis and Butthead show). Also, he wrote and often acted bit parts in Office Space, Idiocracy and Extract as well as the animated Beavis and Butthead movies. Really cool and talented guy.

Just getting round to listening to this album. Thank you for telling us about it! So great -- George singing so naturally and with such relaxed virtuosity, if that's not a contradiction. His respect for Hank shines through -- holding those notes in classic high lonesome style, he seems in touch with Hank's soul.

Great post! Ken Burns country music documentary series is awesome and they touch on this time for Jones and his promise that he would only and always play country music.. They played these songs everywhere in every condition before they recorded the album.. Art is often best made directly and keeping it real..

This was back when mainstream country music was so real and unfiltered. 1960s Nashville must have been something special. I owned the cassette reissue of this album, bought it back in the late 1980s and I remember how great it was. George could sing anything I do believe.

Shawn Camp said Mike Bub was everyone's favorite Bubby. He also said he was a great road manager and a great bass player. Thank you for identifying the session players. I remember the story of the last 4 songs Hank Williams ever recorded were done live and, I believe in one take each. I may have heard it on here. I never heard of the luthier and a couple of other sessions players you mentioned. That is what I really appreciate about what you do. The little back stories of the little things that fill in the spaces really help understand more about the real lives of some of our favorite musicians. Keep it up and I will keep listening.

Otis-great story and while I have a bit of George Jones, I don't have that LP or even knew of it. so thanks for the introduction. Curious if Lou Bradley is related to Owen Bradley.
Regarding the Dumpster comment; In much of Texas the dominant trash collection commercial accounts firm is Browning Ferris Inc but they go by the name BFI. Blaze Foley of whom you've done a nice job introducing to many here was intermittently homeless and was known to curl up inside a dumpster with a blanket on a cold winter night. On stage Blaze would often spin yarns between songs. One of those yarns was about sleeping in a dumpster-and the punch line was -"Ya know the big dumpster firm with all the dumpsters behind businesses, BFI? BFI stands for Blaze Foley Inside. "

That album, along with most of George's later material from Musicor, was recorded against Musician's Union rules, due to Pappy Daily's greediness (he never had George's interest at heart). Rules stated at the time that only one session could be booked per artist per day, only being able to record four songs per 4-6 hour session. Some of George's Musicor sessions ended up being 12 hours straight, with the books being cooked saying there were two separate 6 hour sessions, one day following the other or they were scheduled on opposite ends of the same day. Now you know why George's drinking got so bad just before he met Tammy

Otis...once again you give chase for lost souls. That is one deep luthier dive reference. I passed on this record twice as both times I ran into it, it was worn to scratch. These worn out records usually tell you two things: 1) the kids got into the record collection and 2) you can bet it was a loved record. I should have just bought it for the album cover alone.
Try this tuning out sometime:DADF#BE -has a soulful, bees are about to buzz, and the birds are singing. It’s easy to find your way around and makes for some melodic line leading. 🙏

Great offering, Otis. "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is my fave from George.
Wow, 3 hours. Cream's "Disraeli Gears" was 3 days. Covers vs originals. Both mind boggling !
I recall reading an interview with David Gilmour from Pink Floyd in the early '70s. He was asked about guitars used for Dark Side Of The Moon and one i remember the most was one he got from a builder in Canada, a Strat type with 22 frets which he used for "Money". If one ever copped the last solo, this is needed. They weren't as common as now.
Maybe the same guy as GJ's ? i wonder...
btw, nice array of amps ! :)

Hey Otis! My copy of Hoosier National (vinyl) showed up on Friday. What an album! Great songs, music, stories. I listened to it two times straight thru right off. Since then I have had played once a day. I've got my friends interested, I have encouraged them to purchase the album. Also have a couple people interested in the artwork, I sent them to your website. I am curious, do you play that Fender Mustang on this album? Any plans to come Kansas City this year?

Thank you, Denny! I'm glad you dig it. I didn't use the Mustang on this record and I'd love to come to Kansas City when this is finally behind us. : )

Always something Otis.after our boxer Samson passed our parents bought a beautiful male bull mastiff puppy, fawn w/black face,my four sisters, parents and myself got to put in a name for him,one vote each but not your own,my submission won 6-1,and Commander Cody grew into his name.this after i saw cc + his lost planet airmen in the same saloon/venue we saw Gregg Allman,Dickey Betts and their band. Would've hope to see George add Kawliga to this album but how do you pick from so many.Great seeing and hearing you cover another unique and interesting topic leaving us with more avenues to go down.Curious about the hat on the wall behind you?

The headstock on that guitar is wild. I kinda like it, but I dont think I have the mojo to pull it off (not that I will ever get a chance to disprove that).
Btw, if I'm still around, I'll visit the Otis Gibbs memorial dumpster behind the Applebees.... and maybe pick up a $2 margarita in the process.

Thanks Otis, always enjoy your stories! Do you know any stories about the first record by the Flatlanders? I’m huge Jimmie Dale Gilmore fan! I believe you talked about Butch Hancock awhile back and thought you might have some insight into all that. It’s one of my favorite records but I heard even the band members couldn’t get a copy when it first got pressed! Don’t know if that’s really true though...

It's interesting that you ask this! I meant to mention the Flatlanders in this video, but I forgot. The producer of this record was instrumental in helping the Flatlanders record their first album. I'll see if I can scrape a few stories together somewhere down the road. : )

Could you talk about Sanford Clark? If you know anything, I sure don't know much. But his album They Call Me Country is just incredible. Haven't heard many people talk about him.

What a great album I have a original pressing and a repressing from the early 80's different cover on the new release but same exact songs I believe maybe in a different order as well but again love the album

There are at least two different record covers out there and they made another Hank album two years later. I think George's fans really appreciated this record, Jason!

I've been obsessed recently about a Porter Wagoner song called The Rubber Room...is anyone familiar with this very weird song? And also, Porter sounds an awful lot like Hank Williams on this song.

As far as the speed of the session, remember, they already knew the tunes. It wasn't like you had to run down a new tune for the band to hear n figure out an arrangement.

….a bunch of naked people dancing around a dumpster behind Applebee’s…that would be cool to see! …It’s amazing how many great singers who have become legends in their own right started off sounding like Hank. Listen to the first Ray Price tracks - “Talk To Your Heart” for instance…if you didn’t know better you would wonder if it was Hank…high and lonesome…not the cool Jazzy Baritone he became.
