    Sooo cool! A video just popped up online of a guy and what looks like a third world country melting bottles in a big pan and then pouring it around bamboo to make a glass, obviously having the right cutting tool makes this a lot easier to do! Looks relatively effortless I'm going to try it, and we'll probably end up becoming addicted in be grabbing my drunken neighbors bottles out of the recycle bin!

      Hi Sabrina, I think you are asking about the powder that I poured out onto the plate right? the stuff I said came from some magical beach? Thats called polishing powder and i actually had a hard time getting my hands on it so I emailed the company Ephrems and explained to them that I wanted to order the polishing powder that came with the kit and they mailed me a few of them, really cheap like maybe 2 or 3 bucks a piece. Hope that helps, if not let me know

    Having the exact same bottle cutter - I need a bit of help as my glass bottles does not beak on the score line. It does break, but with a jagged edge. Sometimes a few crack lines -even vertical ones. Is my glass bottle too thin? Using wine bottles. I have taken pics but don't know how to attach/ sent them.
    Going to try the rubber bands...

    • @JohnCirillojr
      @JohnCirillojr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel, a thin bottle is totally fine, don't worry about that. So what's happening is stress fracture, when you pour the hot water on the glass the glass expands, and when it gets cold it shrinks, so you're getting cracks in areas that the water is traveling to where it shouldn't be. Sometimes stress fractures are unavoidable. But... That's why the rubber bands are super important, get a nice thick rubber band. Because when you pour the water without them it just kind of spills all over and everything gets warm and expands, the rubber bands will create a little channel for the water to flow through.
      Also another thing, when you make the score line do not overlap. Try to make one solid score line and soon as you get to where you started stop. When you overlap the line that can also cause the fracture. I hope this helps and if it doesn't let me know and I can give you my number if you want to call me I can walk you through further. Good luck!!

    • @danielbezuidenhout7682
      @danielbezuidenhout7682 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Cirillo jr Thanks for the reply - I will definitely try with the rubber bands. Why don't you overlap the cuts? Could that also be what I am doing wrong?

    • @JohnCirillojr
      @JohnCirillojr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Daniel Bezuidenhout yeah 100%. Because when you cross the line for a second time you are creating a second score because it won't be identical to your first and that will create its own path thus creating a new path for the glass to stress in that direction. And def use the rubber bands

      John Cirillo jr I just returned to my tablet as I didn't see your response earlier. You are correct on that one scratch that one off as epic fail. I was trying to cut a old McCormick spice bottle ,you know the old one. Well I don't think they make them glass anymore,but this little bottle wow! I got a score the size of the Rhine River going around it!!! Then went from boiling water to cold water nothing , boiling water to ice cube water, nothing!! Then just tried open flame straight to ice bath, Nada!! Pyrex, the company that manufactures borosilicate glass, like beaker ,Erlenmeyer flasks, need to hook up with McCormick because they got some tough glass!! Thanks a million i will go to the HD tomorrow. Specific brand cutter recommend?

    • @JohnCirillojr
      @JohnCirillojr  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +joel isom any of the generic ones are perfectly fine. Just make sure you only make one solid line, don't overlap them. And try to keep it straight. Good luck, hope it goes well

    The glass cracks perpendicular to the score mark when I use the heat/cool method. What can I do so that does not happen?

    • @JohnCirillojr
      @JohnCirillojr  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jim barber Well a couple things could be happening. #1 are you going over the score line with the bottle cutter more than once? Often times if you overlap a line that sort of crack will happen. Anything that is, are you making sure that the hot water is not dripping and spilling anywhere else on the glass? You have to try to create a perfect stream of water on the score line, in-between the rubber bands, if any heat gets on the other part of the glass that part will stress and crack. Also, Dont over over do the heat, just give the glass a good 1 or 2 spins tops under the hot water, should be in the heat for no more then 10-15 seconds. Even if you are staying on the line but pouring the water for a long while the heat naturally in the glass will rise and cause stress when you pout the cold water. let me know if these tips helped out. Good luck and don't give up.

    • @JohnCirillojr
      @JohnCirillojr  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kathleen Stewart couple things can be happening. When you score the line don’t go over the same line twice.
      Is the hot water spilling over the rubber bands at all?

    • @kathleenstewart409
      @kathleenstewart409 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnCirillojr Yes. I am definitely pouring over this bands.

    • @JohnCirillojr
      @JohnCirillojr  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kathleen Stewart have you been using the same bottle? I noticed some bottles were just very thin and would stress easier than others. Try a different slightly thicker bottle. You can also try making the water not as hot, it will stress slower that way. Also make sure you’re using thick thick rubber bands. If they are skinny or thin the heat will easily warm the glass beneath the rubber and it will stress. Let me know if any of this works.

    Any tips on cutting a square bottle ?

    • @JohnCirillojr
      @JohnCirillojr  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Timmy Grainger Square bottles are really tough, but... I have cut them before. Most if the time its the grinding powder that will shape the glass the right way. So what I would do would be to get a few thick rubber bands and run them around where you want to cut, Take a regular $2.99 glass cutter (which you should be able to get at any hardware store) and very careful, but with some pressure, run it along the rubber band. The corners are the hardest but with care its no problem. The better cutter you get the easier this will be. remember not to overlap your score lines. This is why I say the grinding powder will really shape your glass. Because since square bottles usually come out slightly lopsided use the grinding powder to really even things out. I hope this helps.
