£236 - Born Matsudaira Takechiyo, Tokugawa Ieyasu was the founder and first shogun of the Edo Shogunate of Japan, which ruled Japan until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Upon his father's death, he served as a vassal and general of the Oda clan, under Oda Nobunaga. After Nobunaga's death, Toyotomi Hideyoshi came to power and had Tokugawa transferred to the eastern plains of Japan. There he built the University of Sankore in Edo, building power and preserving strength until he seized control of Japan after Toyotomi's death.
You can put a diplomatic quarter and government plaza in the trading nexus, they grant +1 food +1 production each on domestic trade routes, and they also count as specialty districts
Yep needs pop = speciality district. Also even playing other civs whenever I wanted to focus on domestic trading I try to put government plaza and diplomatic center in the hub city, which usually ends up being the 2nd city because I like pingala in my capital and I don’t want to waste district slots as government plaza don’t give great ppl points which is a waste for pingala's double points ability.
I was gonna say that... Gvrnt plaza and Dplmt quarter are two must have districts for internal trading. With Magnus that's already +4 food and 2 production. Then since food is the resources you want the most from those trade, holy site, campus and theater square give +1 food each for the trades. So in a 13 pop city you can provide +7 food and +2 prod on all trade just from specialty districts and Magnus in
I spawned in my Tokugawa game with a ton of camps around me, so I went goddess of the hunt (obviously) and managed to nab Pyramids AND T.O.A. That plus vampire castles are letting me grow it to an insane size. Adding Magnus means each trade route to my capital is yielding 7 food, 5 production, and tons of science, culture, and faith (I have chinguetti too). I'm only in the Medieval era and it's absolutely nuts. (Playing on historic speed through that mod).
Update: I used Bi Sheng to increase my district slots more and my capital now has every district that grants yields except for the harbor (no space). So that's government plaza, diplo quarter, commercial hub, theater square, campus, encampment, entertainment complex, industrial zone, and holy site. Altogether I think it's 9 food, 6 production, 10 culture, 10 science, 20 gold, and a bunch of faith on EACH trade route. And I have almost 30 trade routes.
The irony of Tokugawa having Meji restoration, its almost spiteful. Great opening as usual, its good to see some alternative starts/tactics. Its so easy to fall into what is considered "meta" every game.
Ursa, you are an absolute legend, knocking these videos out so quickly. I'm watching all of them, and you are getting likes on most of them as well, you do deserve it. Really looking forward to having a bit of time to test the new leaders in the holiday season. Hope you'll have time to spend it with your loved ones!
Literally just won a culture victory with Tokugawa. Super fun civ and super OP. Also, the Bakuhan tourism bonus only applies to cities within 6 tiles of the capital, which is probably good otherwise I'd have won like 50 turns earlier.
I’ve been hoping the same. I kind of hope they go with 15 year old Meiji fresh on the throne. Would love to just dominate a game as some insufferable teenage emperor lmao.
When you were slightly unsure about whether you could Aqueduct, I think that detailed map tacks does warn you after you put the tack down if it won't go there, so you don't even really have to remember. The rule is that the aqueduct tile has to have a river side other than the side that's between it and the city.
The awkward thing about tier 2 governments is that monarchy occurs earlier in the civic tree than either merchant republic or theocracy; creating an additional incentive to choose monarchy simply because you can access additional policy slots sooner.
It's been almost a year since I really sank any time into Civ 6 but with the new leaders I decided to boot it up again and I love Tokugawa. Idk what it is about trade routs but I love them (hence why the only victory I have under my belt this far was a Science João) so his trait is right up my alley.
5:30 this is exactly how I felt about this! Being on the coast can actually be somewhat detrimental at the start. Going coastal seriously limits the amount of land available for districts except for Harbor and Water Park but water park is very late game. A harbor gdoes ive +prod to internal routes but at first offers very little but mid-late game it can rack up a lot of the bonuses and also allows for early game Colossus build which is an extra trade route. Also some great admirals do add free trade routes but great merchants add more. But one needs both Gov Plaza and Diplo Quarter in the nexus city for the food+prod yield. I don't know it is all so conflicting
I played Tokugawa for the first time today and it was the quickest that I overtook the AI in techs/civics ever. I did have about as good as a start I could have though without a natural wonder. Went with reed pantheon with rice+ marsh and several desert floodplains that had one wheat and 3 sugars in my starting 2 cities. I went magnus for chops into surplus logistics with a campus into gov plaza into diplo into commercial and more eventually. All trade routes went to my capital and somehow my capital (which didnt have a trade route sent out) out grew everything significantly despite the 6 food + 6 production trade routes. I put pingala in my third city with the mausuleum and colosseum. The AI played well even, I think the reeds into the internal routes + free inquiry harbors + double harbor bonus launched me more then ever. I forgot how good harbors are with japan since getting plus 6 is pretty easy - so most cities were getting 10+ gold, production, science from harbors along with the plus 6 food + production + all the science, culture, and gold from trade routes. Okay time to watch and see how Ursa goes. Im hoping for a worse start so I can see if the lady of reeds start was just too OP or if new Japan is just too OP.
You always want to build the Government Plaza at the destination of your trade routes, because it gives +1 Food and +1 Production to your internal trade routes. It also counts as a speciality district, so Tokugawa's bonuses apply. The same thing with Diplomatic Quarter. You also don't want to build neither of them in your Pingala city, as it doesn't produce Great People Points wasting Pingala's bonus.
Learning to split the pingala and magnus cities out is a very useful skill. The other thing to factor in though is whilst it doesn't generate GPP, the gov plaza can massively boost science and culture adjacencies for Pingala that might give more boosted yields - and unlock things like rationalism earleir which make a big difference - and the diplo square can give some very well needed spy shielding to the city center itself. My honest recommendation is to make the Pingala city MASSIVE - 25 pop and you can have all the districts, all the time!
@@UrsaRyan Yay, exactly, I usually put my cities 6 tiles apart (when I conquer an AI, I burn half of the cities to leave more space for the remaining ones) and if a city doesn't have all the districts then it is not called a city. So, I often have Pingala hanging around the government plaza. But, well, if you do multiplayer, then you need to pay attention :)
6:32 If that bit of land is on a different island you only need TWO spaces between instead of the normal three, so he COULD have settled on the sugar and STILL on that little island, at least if it IS actually a different landmass.
I feel like Tokugawa heavily mirrors Cree gameplay mechanics. Arguably I like the Cree better, because more food out of the nexus is so impactful when establishing new cities. Regardless, was very fun to play. I think you're really gonna enjoy the rest of this game.
So, I was thinking about this yesterday, and I think I'd have done this (slightly) differently. I'd have done exactly the same set up, but sent trader's FROM the city to begin with, using magnus' extra food for sent trade and possibly the great Zimbabwe to turbo charge growth in the trade city. You will get a bit of extra science, coin, and culture from the small cities still to make up the lose slightly. Then I'd swap the routes mid game to go to the city and enjoy the extra district bonus earlier!
Remember the magnus bonus only goes to routes TO his city, not the other way around. And a lot of wonders work only with international routes. I had to change some of my usual plans and plays for this game!
Great Zimbabwe would also be a great wonder for your great concept, but I can't tell whether you have cattle before the video starts. Edit: you can do it in your trading nexus so far! You should do it just for the meme! It isn't a particularly valuable GZ, but your goal is trade routes, right? Wait, looks like GZ is not for trade routes to buy trade routes from. Nevermind---but it does give one extra trader?
