The movie couldn't be used to summarize her character arc bc it requires multiple movies. Its purpose was to fill in the gap to make her arc more complete. Can't criticize the movie for what it is.
This was a really good dive and cool way to look at her character. Since she hasnt had her own movie, her growth has been in little pieces over many movies. By pulling all of these clips together, you really see how much growth Natasha had. Thanks for a great video.
I always felt Winter Soldier was as much a Black Widow movie as a Captain America movie, even though they didn't call it out as such. There was tremendous character development for her in the movie.
That’s because they planned on doing a solo movie early on but the Marvel execs were afraid that a female hero movie wouldn’t succeed until Wonder Woman saw the success it did. This should’ve came out after Civil War
I never forgot Loki's lines in Avengers when him and Natasha were talking. At the time I thought he was saying she was Drakov's daughter though. Just like on Vormir the Red Skull said she's the daughter of Ivan, but since they spoke on her mother during Black Widow and how she died I wonder what happened to her father?
I was heart broken in Endgame when Nat died, but after watching Black Widow it really did give her sacrifice more meaning and brought a little closure to us fans.
I can’t stop thinking about how good her character progression could’ve been if Black Widow came out after civil war. When I was watching infinity war, I kept wondering why I felt such a disconnect with her character, and it never occurred to me how much time actually passed between her being on the run to her fighting against thanos. There was so much growth that happens in Black Widow, and her arc never felt as complex as the rest of the avengers coming into the Infinity war/endgame storyline. I’m glad she got her time to shine as one of the OG avengers, but it feels too late. Her story ended with endgame, and I think it was a big risk to push the movie back so far and to not have this progression happen before her death.
Blame Ike Perlmutter. He was head of Marvel Studios until 2015, and wouldn't let women or POC lead films get greenlit. If it ever feels like the MCU is playing catchup on woman/POC representation, they literally are doing exactly that.
For people who get to the MCU late, they will get the privilege of seeing all the movies in proper order and get a better viewing experience than us OG fans who watched the movies in the order they were released.
It feels like a slap in the face that they released it a few years after endgame. But I don't think it's too late for it to solidify her character arc. I see it more as a reward. Showing who she truly was in those final two installments of the infinity saga. In a way, it's like the giant funeral Tony received in Endgame. This was like a swan song for her showing just how much of a true hero she was underneath. You don't have to like it, but just try to appreciate that it's finally here and it works if you let it.
I think MCU never did justice to the black widow as a character and Scarlett as an actress, how it is possible that Yelena's character takes all the credit of the movie just for being fun. Natasha never was a comedic character she always were more dark and mysterious one. It's unfair people expectations to be a comedian and a funny fiction movie.
@@fabioladantes8479 Right now the MCU cares more about the MCU then any individual character. So if one character has to get screwed or sacrificed to make the MCU more successful it will be. In point of fact, Nat did hesitate, if only for a moment, before releasing all the Hydra/Shield files. I think Scarlett Johansson played that scene very well and that hesitation let the audience know there were things in her past she didn't want revealed. But she only hesitated for a moment because she was willing to pay the price to do what she thought was right.

this is a generous reading of MCU natasha that wouldn't be possible without each film retconning & cherrypicking something about the previous films. that being said, with the cinematic universe to date, it's a well-reasoned and compelling examination of her character that fills in a lot of what directors chose not to connect
I feel like if you took the Black Widow solo film stuff out of this video by Ryan, it would be the exact same thing. That’s a testament to how great of a character she was in the MCU leading up to her solo film, and how pointless the solo film ended up being. I got nothing more about her character from this solo film. Her arc was already well-established. She was already fully-realized, hence why her death in Endgame hit so hard. A character like Wanda still had an origin story to be explored, while characters like Bucky and Sam had new angles to explore in light of Steve’s death. Black Widow though? No. If they did a very interesting, creative series on her like with what they did with Loki, then fine, but a solo film this late is just so pointless. Hell, they could’ve made this into a Disney+ version of The Americans and I would’ve been happier than what we got in this solo film.
@@KevinWidesouls Well we got more Natasha, got see a little bit of how she became the Black Widow and most important of all, we got an introduction to her sister Yelena which is just AWESOME!!!! and on top of that we get to see even more of Yelena in future Marvel shows/films which is AWESOME!!!.
@@KevinWidesouls The reason this video was made was because of the solo film. It literally brought it all home. Had the film not highlighted the importance of her character her characterisation would’ve gone over the majority of the people’s heads and the significance of her death would’ve been forever overshadowed by Tony’s. We actually get details on her origin and what happened with her and Hawkeye and made me appreciate her relationship with Cap that much more. This film was necessary to complete her arc and show her significance within the MCU and the Avengers.
I really loved this analysis. I didn't expect to like Black Widow's movie but I actually really liked it. I think it reminded a lot of people of how sad but heroic and as you said, beautiful her sacrifice was in Endgame.
i enjoyed the movie very much. AND I liked the Taskmaster "twist". I think people who are complaining about it might be under the impression or wished that this movie had to establish and develop the character more, but this wasn't a Taskmaster movie, it only presents an origin, and the possibilities are open from here on out. I think they made the right call. The movie was clearly more focused on introducing Yelena and on what Ryan said in this video, and did a great job at that. I also want to see more of the Red Guardian!
This was still a Natasha movie. It wasn't a Yelena movie. The writing of Yelena and casting of Florence Pugh actually worked really well. I, too, would love to see some Soviet Super Soldiers, if not a movie, there's always a show, or even What If?
I am sure Nat's whole family got snapped. Because after everything that happened and the fact that Nat hasn't seen any of them since she left them at the end of the BW movie, I believe she would have gone to be with them rather than moping around the Avengers Compound. Also, when you watch every one of her scenes in Endgame, now knowing she lost all the Avengers family AND her Russian family to the snap, her emotion and her lines of desperation to bring back everyone are so much more raw.
Now seeing clips of her attire after Civil War, Yalena giving her a kickass multipocket jacket that stuck with her for some time is a great way to show consistancy on a minor level🔥🙌🏾💯it makes you sit there like ohh so thats where she got it, thats cool
These videos are your best quality and honestly the main reason I follow your channel. You're the best one around for these analyses, keep it up.. and thank you!
Well done sir. This was a beautiful tribute to Natasha. Without superpowers, she was the realest out of the bunch. Probably the mist griping character arch. Shame her standalone movie came after her sacrifice…
I def think it should have came out sooner during that timeline. It explains so much and really would have made people understand her actions and progression more in the other movies.
Ryan, I just wanted to thank content creators like yourself. You take the time to appreciate a lot of the minor nuances, storyline arcs, call backs and homages. It’s channels and videos like this that make me grateful to be a fan. Thanks again
This review of BW actually brought me to tears. Bravo! 👏🏻♥️ After several re-watches of the Marvel movies, Natasha has become my favorite character. She hung in with gods and superheroes with no "super powers" except her mind and her badass moves. Her sacrifice in End Game was tragic, heartbreaking, and beautiful.
just watched Black Widow on Disney +....didn't have high expectations and especially during the early character intros but OMG...that middle to end blew the movie off the screen. It was FABULOUS and I thought ScarJo absolutely ate up the scenes like never before. Bravo on the film and bravo on this breakdown !
Right. Like what was the point other than sex appeal in the beginning and then you give us this great story. Come on Marvel hire people who actually want characters to shine
.... and then they opened a way for her to come back through the multiverse if necessary.. Don't count her out. We were upset about Gomorrah as well and look how that turned out. Time travel and multiple universes open all possibilities. Overall, Marvel plans at least 10 to 15 years in advance. Just think about how long ago they introduced Adam Warlock being made in GOTG part 1 and we have not seen any of him... Things will come when they come with Marvel. Their writers have the storyboard that extends for at least a century lmao!
This was incredibly well done, I’ve heard lots of conversations about her character being all over the place though out the MCU. This summed it all up perfectly though and gave me a new appreciation for her character. 🙏
Wow. This is the best story telling or narration of Black Widow's history in the MCU. It makes more sense now. Thank you for explaining and detailing all of this. I'm glad I watched this. So on point.
“She can make the ultimate choice” Can she tho? Cause if Barton had jumped it would’ve caused a Nexus event and the TVA would’ve personally pushed Nat to her death 😂
What's always impressed me with the MCU was the depth and humanity (even with robots, trees, and raccoons) of it's characters. That was certainly the case with Black Widow.
Thank you, I teared up a bit. The MCU has overall been mind-blowingly well done in their character arcs over so many different movies/shows with so many characters. Please do videos like this for all the mans characters after their story has “concluded.” Tony Stark arc is also very profound in his progression and deserves a video like this.
@@MasterOrona fym go down swinging? would you rather have seen her die by the hands of ebony maw or some shit? she had a great character arc, and her death was both heartbreaking and noble, which is exactly what you would want out of any major character's death. she got her redemption, she got what she wanted, and she died for a cause, which was her ENTIRE PURPOSE.
I gotta thank you. You said you had a new appreciation for Black Widow. I have to say that I now have a better appreciation for her character after watching this! Not that I didn't like her before, but this brought her story in the MCU to a whole new level. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!

It's weird, I understand the character, Scarlett is great a great actress and her story arc is well developed. I just can't associate with her or care about the character, no matter how much I try. I seem to be more invested in Nebula and want to see more of her in upcoming MCU productions.
@Cruzn2Space Lol, calm down. No need to get emotional on it... all the characters relate to different fans and there is something for everyone. You'll understand when you get older, don't worry about it.
I think it would’ve been much more compelling for Taskmaster to hate Nat and not be mind controlled, so that the consequences for her actions weren’t easily fixed with those vials
You never know, in another Timeline perhaps it was Barton that made the sacrifice and Natasha was forced to watch him fall. Maybe they can both win by bringing Natasha over from that Timeline.

I really loved this analysis. I didn't expect to like Black Widow's movie but I actually really liked it. I think it reminded a lot of people of how sad but heroic and as you said, beautiful her sacrifice was in Endgame.
Might be your best video yet. Beautiful character analysis.
Oh my.. very good analysis.. enlighten her whole arc.. RIP Natasha Romanoff, long live Black Widows
Wow, beautiful masterclass on Natasha’s character development.
...I think Black Widow is my favorite character now. That was a damn good video.
This video make me love Black Widow even more. She was so important to the MCU we all love. thanks, Ryan!
THIS is what should have played before the movie, rather than the 25 minutes of trailers and commercials. Brilliantly done. Your best work so far.
i enjoyed the movie very much.
Omg this video moved me , it got me tears what an amazing way to give justice to blackwidow's whole journey ❤️
Did Yelena also get snapped? If so this would be even more heartbreaking when you watch Natasha in Endgame.
Now seeing clips of her attire after Civil War, Yalena giving her a kickass multipocket jacket that stuck with her for some time is a great way to show consistancy on a minor level🔥🙌🏾💯it makes you sit there like ohh so thats where she got it, thats cool
best analysis of the character's journey I've seen.
Man I’m tearing up! Amazing video
You did a wonderful job putting this together. Of course I’d love to see videos of every character.
This is the best video of Black Widow's character explaining everything.
These videos are your best quality and honestly the main reason I follow your channel. You're the best one around for these analyses, keep it up.. and thank you!
Thank you for making this. You made me appreciate the movie a lot more.
Well done sir. This was a beautiful tribute to Natasha. Without superpowers, she was the realest out of the bunch. Probably the mist griping character arch. Shame her standalone movie came after her sacrifice…
Really good breakdown “Black Widow” gave me all the feels too…..
Her journey came in full circle.. Quite emotional watching this
I def think it should have came out sooner during that timeline. It explains so much and really would have made people understand her actions and progression more in the other movies.
Great summary of Black Widow over 11 years. And, you have pieced everything together so well. Love from Singapore
The tribute Nat deserves. Why am I crying? 😭
As Singapores biggest number 1 die hard black widow fan I am beyond appreciative of this video. Still breaks my heart to hear that whistle back
Best video essay. Great analysis! Definitely dropped a tear or two 😭🤧
this is THE tribute natasha romanoff deserved. marvel could never. you are amazing thank you!!!!
I would love a breakdown of Loki done like this!
Ryan,
I just wanted to thank content creators like yourself. You take the time to appreciate a lot of the minor nuances, storyline arcs, call backs and homages. It’s channels and videos like this that make me grateful to be a fan. Thanks again
17:32 I don't think I can see this pose again without laughing.
This narrative on Natasha in the MCU is a gem... you clearly are one of the best narrators our there. 🙏🏿
Ryan - sometimes you drive me crazy when you begin speculating but I love, love this breakdown of Natasha's arc.
And I got a little teary to boot.
Ant Man reference: He’s kinda good at this.
I know right!
Rocket said that not ant man
And actually the quote is "he's really good at this" lol
just watched Black Widow on Disney +....didn't have high expectations and especially during the early character intros but OMG...that middle to end blew the movie off the screen. It was FABULOUS and I thought ScarJo absolutely ate up the scenes like never before. Bravo on the film and bravo on this breakdown !
Glorious purpose. Everyone has one or is trying to find one.
2:47 The editing of the flashback scene in Black Widow with the narration by Loki in The Avengers was very well done.
"She became ... one of the most human and compelling characters of the MCU"
... and then they killed her.
She died for a cause she believed in, pretty noble end I believe.
@@OroraMonroe
She’s not coming back lmao
This was incredibly well done, I’ve heard lots of conversations about her character being all over the place though out the MCU. This summed it all up perfectly though and gave me a new appreciation for her character. 🙏
What a great video this is such a well-made video on black widows MCU legacy
Excellent video. Natasha’s story runs through the whole Infinity Saga, and she’s like the heart & soul under all the action & CGI.
F9 : "It's All For Family"
BW : " Hold My Beer"
Wow. This is the best story telling or narration of Black Widow's history in the MCU. It makes more sense now. Thank you for explaining and detailing all of this. I'm glad I watched this. So on point.
I love Natashas whole story in the MCU.
Maaan you really give a comprehensive and a much deeper analysis of Natasha as a character in the MCU and I LOVE IT!!!!
She will forever be looked at differently in every film from now on.
She dead
god, I am literally crying while watching this video. thank you for understanding this role in such an extraordinary way.
“She can make the ultimate choice”
Can she tho? Cause if Barton had jumped it would’ve caused a Nexus event and the TVA would’ve personally pushed Nat to her death 😂
No, they'd take Clint and reset the timeline. No need to murder natasha
LOL
14+ mln timelines erased by TVA?
okay this is funny, caught me off guard haha
Maybe thats how tva got all those soul stones
your character breakdowns give the movies a new layer of complexity and beauty, cant wait to watch more like this
Nat would be at home in Fast and Furious. The number of times family was mentioned in BW convinced me of that.
You are such a good analyst. I love your work. The way you explain everything feels better.
What's always impressed me with the MCU was the depth and humanity (even with robots, trees, and raccoons) of it's characters. That was certainly the case with Black Widow.
💯
Thank you, I teared up a bit. The MCU has overall been mind-blowingly well done in their character arcs over so many different movies/shows with so many characters.
Please do videos like this for all the mans characters after their story has “concluded.” Tony Stark arc is also very profound in his progression and deserves a video like this.
If I were in the Marvel writing room;
“So then Natasha lets go and dies”
“That is a shit plan”
Lol.
She died for a cause she believed in, which is her entire arc, how is that shit?
@@chase.was.h3r3 just because she probably won’t return and she deserved better. Like to go down swinging, or even a proper funeral on screen.
[OffTopic] if this new taskmaster gives up being a taskmaster...
i feel like val is gonna take inspiration from this project and makes their own taskmaster with a random former shield agent, thus making a new plot
(sorry just another brainfart, can't help it)
I never knew I how much I needed this analysis of a character
It's weird, I understand the character, Scarlett is great a great actress and her story arc is well developed. I just can't associate with her or care about the character, no matter how much I try. I seem to be more invested in Nebula and want to see more of her in upcoming MCU productions.
I mean Nebula is objectively more relatable than Natasha
I'm the opposite, I understand nebula is a good character but I can't find myself to care about her whereas black widow I'm heavily invested
tf is nebula? u mean yelena?
@@saraa4203 yeah nebula gamoras sister
@Cruzn2Space Lol, calm down. No need to get emotional on it... all the characters relate to different fans and there is something for everyone. You'll understand when you get older, don't worry about it.
Man this was a beautiful analysis of Black Widow, I teared up a little towards the end.
Natasha was the unspoken stronghold of the avengers. Rest in Paradise, Black Widow.
This is a fantastic breakdown of Natasha's character development arc. It might be my favorite Black Widow video of all-time. Well done Ryan!
I think it would’ve been much more compelling for Taskmaster to hate Nat and not be mind controlled, so that the consequences for her actions weren’t easily fixed with those vials
I agree.
I genuinely wanted her to use the vial, and it to not work.
This was an exceptional presentation on Natasha Romanoff. Very in-depth and insightful. I would love to see further characters get this treatment.
Well, if scarlet johansson is ready to play the role again, we can do a phone call to TVA.
You never know, in another Timeline perhaps it was Barton that made the sacrifice and Natasha was forced to watch him fall. Maybe they can both win by bringing Natasha over from that Timeline.
I fully agree with what many people are saying. This is a fantastic analysis of the character of Black Widow. I think that every MCU fan should watch this video. Fantastic job!!
The memorial Natasha deserved
This was amazing to watch. Gave me a new appreciation for Natasha.
