And the original actually explains some of the origin in the opening sequence of the first season and some details are dropped over time in the series about Mutagen ect, and the origins not ambiguous enough that this theory could hold, least for the original, not sure how butchered the TMNT back story is from 2012 though, so maybe the theory works for it, but TMNT been around for much longer than 2012 XD.
