    Flew on this plane several times when it was owned by Morton Norwich. No purple interior at the time. Flew into a dirt strip at a salt operation in the Brazilian jungle as well as well as another plant on Grand Inagua in the Bahamas. Plane also flew into East Hampton Airport on Long Island. It was one of the first jets to fly into EH (1973-74) and the town lengthened the runway so it could take off with a full load of fuel and fly to Chicago without stopping at Suffolk Airforce base. In the video, you indicate that Morton sold it to EP in 1976. Morton must have purchased another JetStar as they had one flying in 1981.

    I know this comment is a bit late and I hope whoever made and edited this video is still reading comments. I just want to say how really great this whole video is - it's a breath of fresh air (regarding editing) compared to so many other horrible videos out there that are so hyped up and over-edited that they are actually stressful to watch. This video shined for me, not just for the extremely interesting content, but it was so natural and relaxing to watch. No silly music added in to distract the viewer, no hard cut editing-out of the natural pauses between sentences when speaking and no stupid video effects, zooms and cuts. All smooth and natural. Maybe you didn't know it would turn out so natural but that's how it ended up. I was right there with you listening to the tour guide - the only thing missing were the musty smells of 1970s fabrics, velour and wood. Thank you.

    This was one of Lockheed's few ventures into the civilian realm, and so they just "naturally" made everything mil-style and to milspec. If you surmised this resulted in a craft with an excellent safety record, you would be correct. (Same with the L-1011...) e.g. even though The JetStar was never intended to be supersonic, the Engineers thought "in a dive, you never know..." so notice there is no hinged "elevator" control surface, but rather the entire horizontal "stabilator" moves as one piece, as seen on their F-104 and other military jets. This eliminates deadly "flutter" and thus improves control at trans-sonic speeds. Elvis knew, and now you do too! 🤔 _sideburns_

    The fact that EPE/ Graceland let it out of their possession after Elvis died and never acquired it back shows that it wasnt of much or any importance to Elvis. As you see when visiting Graceland, everything that really has importance or relevance to Elvis' legacy is there on Display. Also considering this was purchased in late 76 I would say there is a good chance that Elvis never even flew in it. It's well known that the Lisa Marie was his pride and joy and that's the plane he flew in when he traveled. So basically this plane here was at most used by some of the crew for his last one or two tours. So honestly in my eyes the signed paperwork is the most valuable part of the auction, assuming it is included. Because let's face it the plane could never fly again so its basically a lawn ornament that the King probably only stepped foot in when he bought it if then.

The majority of items that have come up for sell has been things that Elvis and/or the family gifted to people and those people have at one time or another sold them. Even the auction that Graceland itself holds each year only consists of items from other sellers. They do not sell or offer anything owned by estate and the Graceland archives. All of that is owned by Lisa Marie and she has stated several numerous times that she will never sell her dads belongings or property and that it will be in their family forever.

Pretty unique aircraft, had a huge aft equipment bay ,had a Garrett apu pretty easy to access and change getting in and out of the hell hole through the opening was not the easiest. what put these aircraft out of service was corrosion especially fuel tank,planks etc. At one time they had a re-engined version with GE CF34's never came about do to all the corrosion issues. Amazing piece of history, it needs to be restored and preserved. I doubt it'll be airworthy unless somebody really does a complete teardown and rebuild right down to the nuts and bolts - along with rigorous testing. Too much time sitting on the ground and under the sun without protection has pretty much killed the airworthiness out of it. If it had been grounded for about a year or two maybe, then it might have flown again - but that time has LONG passed. To quote Indy: "It belongs in a museum!"

    Early jetstars were a compromise in engineering. Four engines were needed to get the performance required from the large airframe. The turbojets were very thirsty and required wing slipper tanks to fuel them. The flight deck was extremely noisy due to the windshield design and the airplane was very expensive to operate. In the 70s there was a redesign including Garrett 731 engines that improved efficiency but the aircraft was still expensive to operate. Later there was an airworthiness directive regarding the wing spars requiring the removal of the Wings causing a lot of the airframes to be grounded. I expect this one will never fly again.

    • @aircates
      @aircates ปีที่แล้ว

      Wing spar issues are what ground a lot of these old A/C. Beech 18 is another beautiful aircraft (though not in the same class as this) that suffers from spar issues. I think this is also a problem with Aero Commander 500 series A/C. They were simply not designed to be flying 60 or more years after the fact. Some designs fair better than others, though.

I imagine it was still owned by the Elvis enterprise, though if not whomever did own it may have attempted to charter it out. I am leary of planes that sit in the sun till hired. Know of at least one crashed on a Las Vegas run with props that just ran out of time. You really need to know what you are about chartering planes.

    I might be showing my age here a bit, but SO MUCH of that plane reminds me of stuff in my house growing up in the 80s. My parents couldn't exactly afford new things at first, so a LOT of their furniture and appliances were given to them by others. That microwave for instance looks a lot like the one we had when i was a kid, my dad had a chair with upholstery on like those in that plane and that CRT TV brings back LOTS of memories...lol. I REALLY hope that whoever buys that plane restores back to its ORIGINAL glory as it was when Elvis had it.

    Pretty unusual to see a plane with square windows, which I know was the reason behind the British de Havilland Comet crash in the 60’s due to metal fatigue.

    • @pajamatime5750
      @pajamatime5750 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Those took place even earlier in the 50’s, but yeah, metal fatigue is what causes them to “explode”! Pretty wild

    • @peterduxbury927
      @peterduxbury927 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I wouldn't fly in it! The British Government cycled pressure tests in a huge bath - in order to determine the reasons for the Comet(s) Breakup at altitude. Square windows was the direct cause. EP's Plane would probably never get another Airworthiness Certificate - if restored.

    • @loganbaileysfunwithtrains606
      @loganbaileysfunwithtrains606 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are rounded edge not fully square, I also think the pressure cycle of this aircraft is not as great as a Comet, and it’s a different generation of aircraft, newer technology and with lessons learned by the Comet disasters, even Boeing said had the Comets not started exploding they would’ve made the windows on the 707 square

    • @MIK33EY
      @MIK33EY ปีที่แล้ว

      @@loganbaileysfunwithtrains606 The Comet windows were also rounded in the corners - I just checked Goggle images. It was the rounded corners that caused the metal fatigue during cabin pressurisation cycles. That’s why we have round windows now as the stresses applied are equal all around the window edges. As for ceiling height, I can’t imagine it wouldn’t be too much different to commercial airliners of the age and the technology would be of the same sophistication to pass FAA rules of the period.
