The Pawns A.I and behavior does change depending on their inclinations and their quest/enemy knowledge. I was able to do a pacifist run where my pawn did all of the work and i just provided buffs and heals. Even with a maxed out optimal pawn the A.I is definitely still weird at times. I've seen pawns jump of cliffs and completely disregard the exequy spell, which is an instant kill spell that is highly telegraphed by a giant red circle. The system is far from perfect and i hope it's fully refined in Dragons Dogma 2.

Bought this game 2 years ago on sale and put it off till this past week. Boy I have been sleeping on this game. The beginning was definitely slow but I got through it and man it’s a blast.
The game just expands after you get to the main city. The gear is fun and you pick up items that make you want to switch vocations. Vocations are dope and I’ve only played fighter and mystic knight. Honestly a 10/10 in my book even after it’s a decade old title. The world is full of mystery and the monster variety is really cool. I love the combat and mystic knight is awesome. Parrying a hit and blasting enemies with a lightning shield is awesome. Honestly it’s a game that if you put more time the better and better it gets.

Black Cat is a bit shady store you will find with a lot of cool things. Just started my new playthrough a week ago and I didn't remember either. The fun starts at level 50 believe me! :)

I'm replaying it now as well. Already watched the show. What I noticed in this game is that there are huge areas that are utilized very poorly. The first 80 percent of the missions take place pretty close. Then the game switches up and then it's like NOW YOU HAVE TO RUN EVERY WHERREEEEE.

Damn i havent seen your videos in awhile.. I was coming to your page to suggest you try this game knowing that the second one was coming out!! No one knows about this game, i always suggest it to people and most havent heard about it.. Its a sleeper. I just started it again last night going full sorcerer on this playthrough.
I think its like a 9/10 especially for when it came out.. The pawn system is cool and the story is very light. I think a little more than souls where they tell you NOTHING, but not huge story wise imo.. Big fan of single player rpg's and this one was very decent and very replayable.. One of maybe 5 games i can think of that had some replayability. Keep up the good work. You have a good growing channel brother!!

This game for someone completely new is def a slow grind to get going. Its different from souls in the aspect it’s not meant to be a grindy game it’s about gear, gear massively upgrades your stats and your augments /abilities need to be fine tuned on higher difficulties or areas. If you still love it after 10 hours I think you’ll be good but you also may find yourself hitting a wall.

@@Renfail I beg to differ, dark souls combat is less or a reaction game and more a rhythm game where you learn the patterns of the enemy and react accordingly. In fact, the souls games gravely punish mindlessly pressing buttons repeatedly (spamming). It is an action game, I understand its not your cup of tea but its not a spammy game.

You have low level pawns(recruited ones). You need to trade in rook and the other one, they don't level up like your main pawn. Always trade them in for new ones after a few levels. Find ones with abilities that mesh with your playstyle, since you can search by ability and level etc. Your pawns mimic your behaviors over time, that's how they learn and become much more viable in combat. For instance if you tell them to come too often they may become more passive in combat situations and instead stay close to the arisen. Combat will improve as you gain augments and skills, transferring augments you've gained from one class to another that you've levelled is a real nice feature for building your character for instance. Also the Netflix show sucks and butchers the story irreparably, doubt it'll be worth your time, but that's just my opinion. Have a pleasant day my dude.

    • @Renfail
      @Renfail  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Huh, nowhere is it explained that you are expected to trade our your pawns every few levels in-game.

@@Renfaila a fun fact, internally the game was known as BBS RPG because the lead was so enamored by early BBS that he wanted to figure out how to put one in a game. so i guess youre supposed to be regularly checking people's postings. you're right it could be communicated better though. the game picks up a lot once you realize though, and it also keeps your party ever changing to keep things fresh.

  • @theslay66
    @theslay66 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Well, you got through the initial jankiness, and the most boring part of the game. It only gets better from there.
As for online pawns, you should definitively use them. However, it's true that some can be completely useless, or even detrimental to your party. But ther's two things :
    - Usefullness of a pawn is entirely predicated on their knowledge, their equipement, and most importantly their inclinaisons. You can check equipement and inclinaisons of any pawn you want to hire, and even search for specific pawns with specifics skills. Look online to know how inclinations work and what you want, it's key to create a balanced party. Some low-level pawns with very godd equipement can be found, and can trivialize early game.
    - It's free. Only pawns with a higher level than yours actually cost you anything to rent. If they're at your level or under, it's free. So there's no reason to not do it, and you're even more or less forced to do it regulary as rented pawns don't level up with you.
    Have fun !

I agree with your thoughts on the game. Pople are praising this game to the moon but after playing it for a lot of hours over 40h I can easily state that the game is not bad but nothing else. Hopefully dragons dogma 2 will fix the issues the first game has. There are some cool ideas in this game and climbing the monsters is fun but that does not make the game good in my eyes. I am going to be complaining about a game that is over 10 years old and was supposed to be scrapped by the studio and apparently got released before the devs could create what they wanted so please understand that I criticize because I looked into how it was developed and I get why it is a niche favorite.
Few examples of cool and annoying implementations:
I really like that lantern can be put out in water. But when you get dry why does the character no longer lit it back again?
Keeping at lantern. It is really cool that you have to stock up on oil but why is there no auto fill option?
Lantern again. Why does the character not put away or at least comment to put away the light when the morning comes?
The companions are cool an all but the game would be so much better if they had their own stories and you could talk with them. Maybe they could have personal vendetta against the enemy you are fighting etc.
When NPCs die they never come back which is really cool. I like when games do that. But why is that not explained? I would watch out for the escorted NPC more if I knew that in the first place. (In my playthrough a which was killed and I could not finish quests with her. It felt really cool and really disappointing at the same time since I did not know that killing an escort npc would block quests from being completed).
Actually almost nothing in the game is explained. You have to literally play the game multiple times to know anything.
It is hard to know which vocation is good or you want to play and it is hard to figure out which skills are even worth picking up.
I started the game by playing a tank It was boring I switched to warrior which was better but still not very fun. Mage was also not very interesting to play. The most fun vocation is strider/assassin/archer. I will still have to try magic archer but the problem is the classes are not equally fun to play.
If the AI was better and there were more combo options for cooperating with your team the game would be so much better.
Biggest drawback is lackluster RPG elements like more dialogue more interesting stories of NPCs etc.
World does not really react much to your achivements It feels like NPCs are just exposition statues left for the player.
Crafting is pretty bad. I collected lots of stuff to get disappointed that I could not craft many useful things with them later on.
Weight system could be removed and It would not make the game worse.
The game can be very easiy since at any time I can pause and drink or eat stuff from my inventory like in zelda and Bethesda titles. You just have to stock up with consumables like grass and give them all to the character with most carry weight and you are immortal all of a sudden. Of course someone can say just do not do that and to those people I can only say: I have a brain and I like a challenge but if the system is there to exploit why not? If it was not there like in dark souls games then that is a different story.
Parts that are good about the game:
    Climbing the monsters.
    Grabbing enemies and companions.
    Monster variaty.
    Lots of classes to play.
Lost of skills to use (even if a lot of them are useless).
Story if pretty interesting after final reveal but I also am not a fan of chosen one stories.
Having to actually use the consumables.
AI for the most part does it's job which from programming staindpoint is really amazing.
The teleport system is an interesting way to travel (this one is a positive and negative since if you play for the first time you need to learn where is it worth to put the crystal in order to be efficient). Teleporting can be overused to farm bosses ( I played with DLC and unlimited teleportation stones).
Status effects that can impede your progress which makes the game feel more dangerous.
If you read till the end of my comments thank you for your time and I am kind of sorry I made someone do that. :) have a good day if you had fun playing the game it is a good thing.
