Noticed our dog JJ had a spot on his hind leg and had him checked out at the vets who said it was nothing to worry about but the spot started getting bigger and he started licking the spot. We immediately took him back to the vets and demanded they do a biopsy and we found out it was a cancerous tumour, they immediacy operated the very next day and thankfully caught it early so he made a full recovery, he is 10 now and living his best life.

My dokter refused to pull my bulldog girl her theet that broke he said her theet would collap. Fall apart. She tot cancer in her mouth. She was almost 14. Verry old for a bulldog but she could have become so much older if he did what i asked

I just had to put my dog down due to lymphoma and had cancer in multiple organs. He had several signs of distress:
- When we would go to our local pet store, instead of heading for the toy section like he normally would do (to pick out a toy), he went to the grooming/ear medicine section. I didn't notice it at the time, but when I look back on it it breaks my heart that he might have been trying to tell us something.
- He stopped wanting to go on walks. This was the first major clue that told us something was wrong and made us take him to the vet for an x-ray. It's how we found out he had multiple tumors.
- His breathing rate changed: look for a rapid rate of 30+ breaths per minute. Anything around 35-40 breaths per minute is considered extreme distress and they're not getting enough oxygen to their brain/organs. He stopped breathing from his diaphragm and started doing "belly breathing" exclusively. It was an effort for him to take a breath.
- He wouldn't lay down. He needed to always sit up because his lungs weren't getting enough oxygen. When he laid down, the weight of his body would compress his chest cavity and prevent him from taking a full breath. He would sit up near constantly and would fall asleep in that position, meaning he'd always start to fall over and then wake up and repeat. We would have to physically position him on his back, or prop him up against pillows so he could get a little bit of sleep.
- When he was sitting up, he'd position his paws outwardly. This was also an attempt to expand his chest cavity.
This was enough for us to know his quality of life was poor so we had to make the heart-breaking decision to euthanize. We did a home euthanization, which I recommend over taking your dog to the vet. We were able to give him a nice last day and because he knew the vet, he was happy to see her in our home. That means he wasn't scared during the final injection and he went out peacefully and in as much comfort as we could provide (in front of our fireplace and Christmas tree) instead of in a sterile clinic setting that may have upset him.
Dogs do not give many visible signs of distress. Remember that they are animals and used to living in the wild for thousands of years before humans, so they've developed survival traits. This means they don't let anyone know that they're suffering because if they did, other animals might attack them or shun them. They tend to suffer in silence and it's so sad.
A final sign of distress that we never witnessed but our vet told us about is that the dog will "nest" in blankets or pillows or go outside and start to bury itself. I thought that was so sad to hear, but its a survival mechanism. You'll rarely hear whimpering.
His name was Winston, he was a Boston Terrier and was only 9 years old. He was a good boy and it still makes me choke up when I talk about him.

Thank you for all of the condolences. Having to euthanize your pet is one of the hardest days to go through. But most of us pet owners will have to go through it because you don't want your pet to suffer and die "naturally" at the hands of old age or disease because it's a slow progression of ever-increasing discomfort and distress for the animal. We, as loving parents, must step in to end their suffering. It's a terrible responsibility we all take on when we open our homes and hearts to them.

If you can afford it, I highly recommend an xray of your dog's torso. It's about 300-400 but it can tell you so much important information. The xray I got came too late--my doggy was riddled with cancer.

My dog does scoot…and he licks some parts of his body pretty often. I was always a little bothered but I thought it was nothing to worry about. Will definitely talk to the vet.

Our dog used to get "floppy head" where the hair on the top of their head got limp when they were ill. Eating grass means your dog has something wrong with their stomach - they know it makes them throw up.

My dog limped every now and then for no apparent reason and even had a couple of balance issues. I think it was him trying to tell us that he needed help. Eventually he stopped playing and his appetite went. He just looked very ‘hang-dog’ and sad. Turns out he was bleeding internally (his tummy was swollen) and had to have his spleen removed as well as a blood transfusion due to being anaemic. 😢
He had liver cancer and we put him to sleep before it got any worse. 💗

I don't even know if there is a vet where I live, and I would have to go for a very loonggg trip to see one, I've had my dog for 7-8 months and my dog does alot of those things.. 😕
Please make the effort. You don't want your buddy to suffer and they rely exclusively on you to make it happen.

My lab shed tears when I tried to clean his infected ears. He made moaning and whining sound hours before I knew I have to put him down bc of cancer. He passed away 4 years ago. Miss you Max.
Dry food....that is horrible for dogs..because all.nutrients are burned....dehydrates dogs..this is why they drink water all the time...if you love your dog....cook homemade dog food. Its super easy. And get vitamins for your dog too.
Had a couple of cocker spaniels that had problems with their anal glands. Worst smell ever when the vet drained them.. 😢

ALSO: understand what is 'normal' behavior for your pet and their breed. Ex: Huskies HATE having paws touched, and that's normal for them. Not necessarily an injury flag.
The paws are an area where the dog licks to self soothe and de-stress. I think all dogs don't like when you touch their paws.
