    When shopping for that upgrade machine find out about how often you need to take it in and have it tuned up. I bought a Pfaff in 2003. My workhorse machine bought in 1983 had blown its foot peddle and I was in the middle of a project. The old Pfaff Hobbymatic was oilable and cleanable by me. The new machine was largely sealed. New machine needed yearly tuneups at over $100, and they weren’t kidding! After the first tuneup I gave this expensive machine to a friend and bought a new foot peddle for my old machine. After a year she gave that machine away too.

    I got interested in vintage machines because I first bought a $100 us machine lasted one project. Bought a more expensive machine from a big box store loved it till it quite working about 6 months. Gave up and discovered vintage and have never looked back. Glad I didn't get discouraged and found what worked for me. As people get to sewing they will know other people and have that " what machine do you use conversation.

    I've had my sewing machine for about 13 years now and I never knew what that funny long foot was for. Now that I need it - boing - it's a 1-step button hole foot. Tried it the other night with some linen and it was so easy...

    I've been sewing since I was 9. I asked my parents for a machine that did zig zag for Christmas that year. I had it for 10 years, sold it and got (as a present) one with more things - a buttonhole maker. About 15 years later, sold that one and bought a more deluxe one. Still have it! It traveled to all the places I lived for the past 30 years. I finally got myself another (no didn't sell the one before). Love it but I think I love that next to the last best. I have enjoyed your videos and yes, I subscribed. Keep up the good work!

    I was looking for those tips when looking for my machine and even though my area sewing store was closed and the Wal-Mart store didn't have any machines at the time I found one from an online store which I thought fitted my needs and purchased it even though it was not the one I was looking for. I ended up getting a Singer 2277 machine which seem to be great with the stitches I need or may need in the future and so far satisfied with it.

    Some really great tips! I agree that vintage machines are usually heftier. I sew on a Singer 1959 Slant-o-matic and it's like a tank! Sews beautifully too. And you can often get vintage machines for less money than the newer ones made with lots of plastic parts.

    I love vintage sewing machines. Especially if they have all metal gears. Just keep in mind that if you do choose a vintage machine that is computerized, your machine will last as long as the computer board. Almost impossible to replace this. Look for a fully mechanical vintage machine (no circuit board) that also has all metal gears. This is advice if you don't plan on replacing your machine for awhile. Also, some vintage machines with plastic or nylon gears may be very difficult to find to replace if they break.

    I just brought a Brothers Project Runway with sewing and quilt computerized stitching, computerized 4 different button holes, stabilized button feature, automatic threader for $89 on sale which the regular price is $150-200. I understand your statement in the sewing machine handling and how it sews, because my bedroom curtains look store brought and I just started two weeks ago. Now, I am going to make a vintage 1930 gown and I am going to make myself vintage clothing after the gown. I had a Singer cost $99 for a week and returned it because it was shaking when I got up to speed and did not have what the Brother Project Runway offered for $10 less; smaller in size and very light, no threader, nor measurements on the sewing plate. great video

    So right about the weight of the machine. My first electric machine (€80 from the supermarket) has just died (after 16 years) because an essential but plastic part broke. I'm making do with a vintage Singer treadle machine until I can afford a really good one. It's a step up from the hand wound machine I started on though!

Thank You, very helpful and straightforward, AMAZING VIDEO.

    If buying new make sure an in store lesson is included and that the advice you get in store is useful. I actually paid slightly more for my Janome Decor Excel 5018 as the dealer was really helpful and understood what I was planning on sewing. I even took a day off work so I could go to lots of stores before buying. That was almost 20 years ago now.

    Thank you, for all of the practical and useful advice you give in all of your videos, this video tops them all with solid advice on what to look for in a sewing machine, I’ve sewn for many years and totally agree that all of the fancy stitches are not necessary, (I haven’t used any of them). I found this video at the perfect time because I was wondering what the perfect sewing machine would have for stitches and came up with, straight stitch, reverse, zigzag, and a button hole maker ( my mother’s machine has a one step button hole maker and it’s fantastic! ), then I wondered if I missed anything, it’s nice to know from a professional that it is that simple. I'm so glad you have pointed out the real musts in a sewing machine. Like another commenter I have also switched out my sewing machine to an older model. It is a beautiful old Bernina and was my grandmothers I think from the 1960s. It's heavy, has 6 different stitch patterns that I use occasionally for stretch sewing or a blind hem and a good button hole function. It replaced a fancy stitch electronic machine that was always going out of kilter so the fancy stitches were useless anyway, too bad, but I'm so happy with my old model. Thanks for your great videos.

      I’ll never forgive myself that when I was a teenager I inherited my aunts old singer and I never appreciated it, I gave it away to someone who would use it not realising that at one point in the future I would do anything to have that machine back to use. It’s probably worth a lot of money now too, but that’s not even the point.
      Now I’m going to have to start my journey on some cheap crappy machine when I could’ve been using a beautiful piece of family history.

    • @diannemh2250
      @diannemh2250 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Natasha___. there are plenty of vintage Singer machines around, and they are generally fairly cheap! Not the same as having one handed down through the family, but you could find the same model. Plus there are really easy to service & repair yourself - lots of tips on TH-cam etc!

    My grandma was a professional sewist (Alta costura we say in Spanish, in Cuba at least) she always had singer sewing machine until she got years later an industrial one but she never stopped using her old singers- she taught me how to sew, she was only pressing against patterns she favored measurements because “no woman has the same measurements” she often said - however I am not good as she was so I will work with patterns for now- back in my native country was very difficult to find fabrics and good sewing machines and the necessary tools to start so after a few garments I quit :(
    Fast forward- I came to the US almost 30 years ago and the desire to start sewing my own clothing has always been in the back of my mind. About 9 years ago my daughter gifted me a singer for Christmas and I loved it but other than mending clothings I haven’t used for creating garments; until now ;) I want to start and your channel, Evelyn, and the pattern scout channel are great resources! I’m actually considering to sign up to your vintage sewing school- how long does it take from start to finish? Thank you Evelyn!

I keep looking for a good old second hand one hopefully I’ll find the one.I go myself a second hand over locker for $30 had it serviced it’s a singer great machine.To bad your not in Melbourne I would’ve love to do your classes.

      Yes that sounds like the 'cheap machines!' As for brands, all the name brands are good really, if you're going an older one, just look for one that is well maintained and is nice to sew with! I do have my Brother and I love it to bits! If you're wanting to know how to alter and refashion clothes I can help you with my online course if your interested?

      Thaks for watching! Most are very standard. Some of the more basic modern machines have predetermined stitches, and they are fine for all your sewing as a beginner, and intermediate really! As long as it is a nice stitch and you learn what they actually all are, it's fine!

    I think my main complaint about my beginner machine, a Bernina Bernette 35 is that it cannot handle thick layers well. My next machine must have a higher presser foot. I really would like to have cute stitches too, because adding those cute details not found in store bought clothes and accessories is part of the motivation for sewing. Maybe that could eventually mean getting a machine that sews but also does simple embroidery.

      Check out free motion embroidery. All you need is a feed dog cover and an embroidery hoop, maybe a darning foot, and you’re ready to go. There are some amazing free motion stuff using only the straight stitch and zig zag stitch. I found this channel that does amazing work that you can take inspiration from. I think her channel is called M Embroidery? I’d have to check my subscription list. She is an amazing machine embroidery artist.
      You can also wind multiple threads in different colours on your bobbin, then sew the fabric wrong side up using the straight stitch. The right side of the fabric with the bobbin threads will have the effect of wider stitches (more rope like) with colour variation.

    I have a Bernina QE150. I have loved it, but the threading mechanism has gone out three times in the last two years. It weighs a ton so it throws my back out to take it to have it fixed. I'm ready to give up on it and just use my little light Brother that I got to travel with, but I can't open it to clean it.You bring up a good point about the weight stabilizing the machine when you sew fast. Just not sure which way to go. Any thoughts?

    My first machine was an old flatbed machine, with straight and zigzag stitching only. It cost $25, and I made heaps of costumes, and even some men's shirts on it. The button holes were a chore, but doable. I used that for four years, until I got married, and then had access to my wife's Janome, which was a free arm machine. Bliss

    If I buy a new sewing machine, I will certainly care about the transport system (maybe a double transport machine). Moreover, the sewing speed is hard to control with my "oldie". About electronic machines, I am rather untrusty...🤔🤔🙄🙄 too much eletronics in my life already...😁 One step buttonhole would be excellent, if I can get all this in one machine only 😉😊

    Question: I have vintage knee peddle Singer Sewing machine. I have some attachments but I do not know what they do at all. All I know is that it does a straight stitch but not a zig-zag stitch. My mom has always told me that because it doesn't do a zig-zag stitch i can't work with any fabrics that have any stretch to them at all which has for years intimidated me from attempting to sew. Is this true? Can I still sew garments with just having a straight stitch even if they have a little bit of stretch or give to them?

    • @Evelyn__Wood
      @Evelyn__Wood  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is a common cause for confusion! To try and make this simple, if you use your straight sewer on KNIT fabrics ( there's knit which are super stretchy, and woven which are not stretchy) the stitch itself has no stretch and the threads will break. You need special machines, or at least zig zag capability to have the stretch required for knit fabric. A WOVEN fabric with a bit of stretch, like cotton sateen for example, you can sew with a straight stitch and the threads won't break. Just do a practice stitch on the fabric you want to use, and stretch the seam all around and see if it breaks! Test everything! x

    • @Evelyn__Wood
      @Evelyn__Wood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great! Though I'm not sure what you mean.... you sew all your seams with a straight stitch, then you 'finish the seams' in the method you like, such as a zig zag, overlock, felled seam, turn and stitch.... you substitute the zig zag seam finish for something else that you can do!
