I love all your videos that help me so much when I sew. Why haven’t anyone ever come up with a way to distinguish between needles.
When you do change to the different needles, it’s a good idea to put a note on your machine what needle you have in the machine. I put some masking tape with the size written on it on the side of my machine.

4:50 ah yes, that's my machine. I have a 30+ yr old machine and the manual actually pairs the needle foot and feed for a lot of common application. It's really wonderful to have and is the start of me trying to learn how a sewing machine works.
My Hubby spoils me rotten! A few years back I mentioned that I needed to get some more bobbins. In a couple of days I received a box of 100! I make a lot of quilts and also quilt on sheep skin and goat skin. So believe it or not I have filled probably more than half of them. To quilt the leather for a purse I will fill 12 bobbins....more for free motion quilting. You need a lot of bobbins!!!! Well! I do!
Your videos are such a treasure🥰 and then I spend another at least half an hour going through the comments which is a pot of gold on its own😊. That loop turner, what I would give to have had one in the past few weeks. I made 7 tops with looooong spaghetti straps and it was such an effort turning them out😞. I managed to find a very old mannequin and have to say that made a huge difference. One of the dresses I made has a turned top in front and I just could not get it to fit properly (the problem of making for the young market and trying to fit on a 58 year old "chest"😂). But once I had the mannequin, I could step back and pin to my heart's content, until I could get it to fit properly.

A cuticle pusher actually works really well for smaller corners.
I used one when I was turning a spaghetti strap and my pin fell out half way. Had to get the fabric back out to start again without damaging it. Managed to do it with tweezers and a wooden cuticle remover.
Oh, a bias tape maker tutorial would be awesome too lol

This is so funny: I've been sewing for about 42 years now (I'm in what you discribe as skill level 3). So I'm now the "owner" (most of it I inherited from beloved & departed Mom) of a serious upgraded dressmaker's toolkit. Which ofcourse includes all kinds of different sewing machine needles as well. But here in Holland we talk about them in the big round nummers like nr. 80 as being the "universal" needle thickness (which you call a nr.12). Ofcourse I had seen that it said 70/10 on the little Schemtz containers, but never knew that "Downunder" and in other (probably English speaking?) Countries you use the lower numbers like nr. 10 and nr. 12.

I was surprised that you didn’t include a hem gauge, I would actually put that in the basics kit. Being petite, I do a ton of hemming, both by hand and machine, and using a hem gauge really speeds up the work. I also like steel rulers in a couple of lengths, for not-on-the body measurements, because of their high accuracy.

Glass topped pins so you can iron over them (unlike plastic topped pins or clips) and find them (unlike plain metal pins).

I’m late to the game, but I always reach for my clapper, my chalk sharpener, my Hera marker, my snips, and… a long piece of twill tape that I’ve stitched fishing weights to. I pin it to my circle skirts when I’m hanging before hemming :)
I got a dress form this summer and I've finally been able to graduate from commercial patterns to self drafted patterns! I've gotten so much use out of it in the past few months, and it was definitely a worthwhile investment! A video on how to pad it out would be so helpful - mine fits my waist and bust, but the hips are about 4 inches too small! I really want to pad it out but don't want to spend the money on pre-made padding.

laughing is my machine came with SO MANY FEET! Thankfully my MIL is a fabulous seamstress and showed me "These came for a reason!"

Just started watching your channel and loving it! Binge watching now! Can you please do a video demonstrating the different feet - zipper foot, overlap foot etc. Would be so helpful to me as I don't really switch out the feet except to do a button or a normal zipper. I have been sewing for years but on a small scale. Would love to try new things.
My husband got me a dressmaking mannequin for our anniversary earlier this year. I agree: definitely a game changer. And mine is also called Dolly!

Thank You !!!/:) For explaining the wonderful world of upgrading dress making tools. I bough a bias tape tool about a year ago and it is indeed a game changer. Buying yards and yards of bias tape and settling for a 'close enough' matching color was frustrating and expensive. Now I cut strips and make my own bias as I am watching a show on TV...EASY-PEASY ! My next step up is the dress form. I have seen them for about $50-$100 USD around the holidays and this year I am going to purchase one.

the pressing ham! I can't find one. In high school ours was egg shaped. I walked around looking for an "ironing egg" got no where. Thank you for your videos. I just make doll clothes. I have the skills I learned in high school. Im 57 now.... just recently started my sewing hobby again. The tiny sleeves are hard. Sewing on a curve is hard.... And I'm getting thread bunching messes, but I'm going to be sure to start with a long tail and hold on to them... I'm hoping that will solve it...

I have learned so much watching your videos I took home economics in junior high and that was the only " schooling " I recieved in sewing. I did however learn alot doing things by hand modifying clothes to fit me well. The one thing I never got though was bias straight grain and cross grain until your video. In 5 minutes I understood and could apply it. In last 2 years I have purchased two vintage singers I love and am now becoming reacquainted with sewing not just mending which is most of what I have done until now. I will be joining your sewing club next week. I truly enjoy how you teach and look forward to learning to become more than a beginner. As for mending lol it's often more than just on mondays. My teenage daughter is very hard on clothes

I use a knitting needle for poking/turning out corners.

My first game-changing upgrade was buying a rotary cutter + cutting board. After investing in those I was much more looking forward to starting all of my projects.

That Purple Thing, for keeping fabric from buckling the wrong way under my serger blades and to thread strips thru casings
Tronex Micro Flush Cutter, a jewelry tool and also an amazing little cutter for trimming threads and opening buttonholes
Wonder Clips, I bought a pack of the Jumbo and LOVE them. No more poking my fingers with pins. These are like binder clips only they're made of plastic. They hold well and release without any marks on the fabric.

My favorite for turning out corners is a wood paper folder, they are only a few dollars, are very smoothly sanded, and have the perfect, slightly blunted, sharpness on the point - they make a crisp corner, but never poke through it. I was taught to use the point of embroidery scissors, but they can pierce through corners. I often use the paper folder just to sharpen up corners on vintage pillowcases, etc., before I iron them.

I would also include books (not sure if there were mentioned in your basics video). Some are really fantastic, Nicole Vasbinder has a couple of great one on stitches (both machine and hand) and another on using your machine (including all the feet!) The one on stitches explains what some of fancier stitches on the machine are used for and how to use them. So different to the main sewing books I have come across. I love having a variety through, as not all techniques are the same. I will often look at 3 books and pick the version of the technique that I think will work the best on the project I am working on.
Yes I totally agree! I also collect vintage sewing and pattern making books! There is never only one way to anything in sewing and I am so happy to hear that you look at them all and then decide what works best for you!

Dress forms can be expensive & duct tape forms can ruin pins . If anyone wants to make your own from your body, start with the duct tape form, use the duct tape form as a pattern, next materials are mesh screening, metal coat hangers, old flyers & stuffing, bend hangers to shoulders , around neck & all key points around your body, stitch into mesh screening in the same measurement, cover with fabric & you have a you to work from. I also seen a video where someone used expanding spray foam in their duct tape form to make a dress form so there are many options without spending a mint , the way I done mine cost about $35 canadian. Making a new cover for mine to match small sewing space, gonna be smart that 1st time around, I'll put velcro into back of cover so if I wish to recover again it'll be easier to do so & store for if I choose to reuse again in the future
My dressform’s name is Dolly too! Lol and I do that awkward head pressed against bust to adjust the height too.

You definitely could, I've never made one though. But I do plan on making a video on how to pad out your mannequin!
Too bad there is no way to make one smaller. I recent illness has caused much weight loss, now need a smaller manequin. And they are not cheap.
I used a muslin covered tightly rolled up hand cotton towel for years. It wotked great. Was gifted a ham shaped one, and small rectangle one.

We made pincushions in school on the 3rd grade - with elastic, of course (and used them for the rest of the textile work classes until 6th grade). Practical, but that bracelet is much more stylish.

usually you'll find TH-cam videos on the brand machine you bought. Different feet will be shown there too.They are great and very detailed too
Most machine brand websites or YT usually have videos on the machines different feet.

I have a vintage collapsible sleeve ironing board, I find it so helpful :)

Evelyn, I have a 1950s style iron (thrift shopping) that I use with a damp press cloth when working with linen and the seams on wools. It is very heavy and tames those fibers better than modern steam irons because of the weight + heat. Linen seems to wait for the modern iron to pass to throw up those wrinkles again.
Try Daiso Japanese varsity shops they sell plastic bobbins in small plastic cases ...12 in the box for $2.85 ! 😍. And some boxes have thread on their plastic bobbins for the same price ❤️
I finally broke down and bought a ham and a sausage lol Stuffing socks to make a sausage gets old really fast lol
I've never seen a "floor ruler" before,, what would it be called ,if different in another country,?? I looked on Ebay and Amazon and they showed me tile rulers,,lol

My favourite tool is a desktop sewing caddy that keeps everything ordered and in the right place. It's definitely not an essential, but it's the best $2 I ever spent at an op shop.
I would love to see a tutorial on how to pad a sewing form to make it into my shape. That would be fabulous!

Can you do a video on hem tape? It's pretty overwhelming trying to figure out fusible VS non fusible, horsehair (like huh???) VS cotton, stabilizing??? the widths and washable VS non washable... Let's just say I have many UFOs because I cannot seem to get the right tape! 😭 #halllllp

I have vintage ones! But you can find them new
Elaine J when buying pinking shearers work them for a couple of minutes, ask to use a piece of scrap if you can. I have a pair that I bought without this and they are so stiff, even after oiling and waxing, that my hand gets tired quickly.

I have just found your channel, and I love it. Great tips! Since I don't (yet) own a mannequin, I use a ruler that is a modified version of the one in your video: mine has a little pump with a reservoir full of powdered chalk. When I want to mark a hem on a garment that I am wearing (and don't have anyone to help), I just ajust the hight of the chalk and press the pum an "voilà!", a nice little white mark. Do this all around the skirt or watherver. I love it. Another trick I use is that I tie one of those little cisors on a string near my sewing machine. They then never get lost and I can snip those little threads as I work. Love your wrist pin cushion and pressing hand , got to make myself some of those! Also, I imagine, the pressing hand could also help when handsewing: just pin the fabric on it and pull with the other hand to sew much faster.
You should consider making yourself a chatelaine to hold your most useful tools! A ribbon that holds tools around your neck or waist! I put mine on as soon as I walk into my sewing room! Then I always have a pincushion, snips, measuring tape, and a spool of basting thread is always right on me! There are some cute patterns online for them!
