There is absolutely no question that this commercial was aired before 1997; It was probably 1975 or 1976, - at the very latest. I am a bassoonist and the man who is featured on this video was one of my greatest teachers, Jack Marsh, who was a Hollywood studio musician. He played in countless movies and commercials over many decades. I began studying with him in late 1975 or very early 1976 and remember hearing this commercial at the time I first began lessons with him. Although I graduated from high school in 1976, I continued to study with him as he was an incredible musician.
@@kevinfranck6520 Think he made a typo and hit "1997" instead of "1977." He meant this commercial came out before 1977 so the date is off by a year or two.
Produced by Kurtz and Friends. According to Martha Sigall who painted on these it took weeks because everything was moving. Inkers included Maria Alvarez, and Marsha Sinclair.
An animatic of this ad was on display at the old California Museum of Science and Industry back in the day. The beginning played on a continuous loop. CSB over.
I remember this when I was in high school. You notice oil companies no longer advertise. 40 years ago attorneys, liquor companies and pharmicutals didn't advertise. 40 years from now? I'll be dead.
Hi Guys, I think this was 1976 and I think my Dad Lee wrote it when he was working for BBDO in San Francisco. I'm pretty sure he got a Clio for this spot.
OMG I remember this commercial like it was yesterday! Had no idea it was from the 1970's. Wow. Still a timely message today and was obviously from the gas shortage era now that I think about it. Thanks for posting!
I'm pretty sure this is 1975/1976 when this aired. There were others that followed, in a series of chevron commercials ...but this one was the first one that was made. I was in the 7th and 8th grade when my Dad and Mom made this. 1977 my parents were not together any more...so I know it is not 1977.
@@darintomack5404 did your father work at the studio or from his home. There were several animators that sent their work in. Like Dale Case. Most the time I never saw animators other than a handful at the studio back then. But i did love going to the studio back in those days...
@@TakKurtz my dad was a film editor, and the few times I went in with him, I would have been 9 or younger. So, I don’t know exactly where we went. Just knew that he worked for Kurtz & Friends.

This aired during Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid. I had no idea the fossil fuel industry was attempting to brainwash me to be a pro oil adult.

Funny, it says right in the title 1977

This reminded me of the "Mr. DNA" sequence in Jurassic Park." I looked it up, and it was animated by the same person, Bob Kurtz.
Holy shit, never expected to see you here. I was just binging some Prehistoric commercials because of that one tweet you made recently.
@@Killerwhale-kp2fm Haha, hi!
Good memories! I love this commercial, one of my favorites animation of all times!
I feel the same way, which is why I searched for it and was glad I found it. Do you remember the Levi's Haw Haw commercial?

This ad made me sad as a kid.

Was there during my tour visit. Great memories there gone...shucks

Classic dad, tricking a whole generation into thinking oil comes from dinosaurs. Greatest dad joke ever!
Is this why so many people think oil came mostly from dinosaurs?

I tend to agree. I remember watching it when I was in college, and I graduated in 1976.
I think my dad may have worked for your dad for a number of years and during this period.

Looks like an alternate version of the Mr DNA scene from Jurassic Park
