Tell Austin to look into taking Glucosamine and Chondroitin for his knees. I blew out my left knee at age 38, had an ACL reconstruction at 39. Unbeknownst to me, they left in a 1" x 1/2" piece of bone that lodged under my knee. Due to moving out of state before my therapy was done, it was never caught. For 7 years I hobbled, putting all my weight (250lbs) onto my right leg, which destroyed my right knee. I had meniscal tears in both knees and they finally found and removed the bone from my kneecap. But by then I was walking bone on bone, no cartilage left to speak of and my joints always felt loose and ready to tear. I started taking Glucosamine & chondroitin and about a month later I realized the pain was much better. I have religiously taken it since. I am now 63 and no knee problems. (I stopped taking once, early on, thinking I was healed and didn't need it anymore, within two weeks my joints started grinding.)
I take the Wal-Mart Spring Valley Triple Strength brand.

You need to find a nicer bike trail to start your bike camping adventures. Dont plan on 20 mile days in mountain trails. Dont make your trips into bikeathons. Your push to meet deadlines ruins the relaxation of trail biking. Take backpacker tents and freeze dried food to just add hot water. Jerky and other foods with salt. Freeze your water bottles half full and add water as you drink them down, you will always have cold water to drink. You need to take saddle bags so your stuff doesnt shift. Why not let the kids help plan the trails. You are micro managing everything, planning is half the fun. Ive biked the mountains, its supposed to be fun. Stop what you are doing. Let the kids plan the next trip.

It is not unusual for newbies to long hikes/biking to underestimate their water/electrolyte needs and that can get you into big trouble in a hurry. That, in combination with heatstroke, has killed people who thought they were very fit and could just muscle their way through a bad situation. Of course, when your body gets really stressed like that, it is also difficult to think straight and make wise decisions, so then everything just snowballs. So, lessons learned. Work up to the 100 miles by taking shorter trips and gaining real life experience on the trails and above all, stay safe.

I don’t know if you use some form of filtration for your water, When you were on your biking trip. But you should definitely do that next time even if you think the water is safe and looks like a good source, it can sometimes not be just around the corner or upstream. There could be a dead deer or a dead animal in the water. Sending Pathogens down the water to consume. Use a life straw or boil the water or some form of carbon filtration. it would make it safer so no one accidentally gets sick. I don’t know if that’s what happened to Josiah because Of course I’m not a fortuneteller. But I could possibly bet that’s exactly what happened an he consumed a foreign pathogen his stomach didn’t like.. we are filled with microbiology and we can look at our body as one big anaerobic source for these microbes to live in and thrive in. And when you put a bacteria in you that it doesn’t like it gets very upset. Just throwing a little FYI out there hope you guys are a little extra safer next time. Don’t want to see anybody falling ill,Much love ❤️

@@geokando2000 I got stomach Gardia once my self and it was horrific. Was sick for a week in extreme pain and extremely ill. But then it destroyed the probiotics in my stomach an took me about 2 years of upset stomachs on a daily. And I had to tend for my stomach by drinking probiotics, kombucha, and yogurt to rebuild those probiotics in my body and in my stomach, so it could once process and digest food properly. So only speaking from a little bit of experience definitely was not a good time. I don’t think Josiah got Gardia, but there are many many different types of bacteria out there That can cause your digestive system and immune system to get very upset. But with just a little bit of know how and precaution you commonly can avoid most of these.

That thirst you had-multiply by about at least 10, and that’s what it feels like having super high blood sugar and/or before diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and/or ketoacidosis. Except even when you get water the thirst is not quenched. I’ve had type 1 for 31 years and I’m not walking around with high blood sugar currently BUT it’d be rare for you to see me anywhere ever, without water. That thirst really gets into your mind, especially if you don’t have anything that will quench it. What can I say, I’ve been warped and changed through the years lol. This bike packing trip really brought back some memories for me of fun times in my youth. Nice job y’all.

Just a polite FYI - Movie Theaters do not make their money off the movies - the film company takes anywhere from 95% - 99% of the ticket price. The remainder of the ticket price covers the cost of Box Office equipment, personnel, posters, and mylars. Everything else - payroll, utility bills (which run in the thousands every month), building maintenance, taxes, etc comes from the money they make at the consession stand.

For example, when you order popcorn, do not put on salt and order it without butter and order non carbinated drinks that are offered. I cannot begin to tell you how many people on a daily basis pe3ople would go to the concession stand order a large popcorn with extra butter, at least one candy bar, and then order a large diet soda (so they could get the free refill) and say they were getting the diet drink because they were on a diet - and yes, once the movies have started the concession employees (mostly high school and college students, did laugh at them and the new employees would be in shock even though theye were warend during training about such orders.

Even hardworking and prepared [whether homesteaders or not] people don't these day in particular. It would be more humble [and wiser] as things get tough economically not to so freely publicize your customized pantry and large food stock. Sorry, but making ice in ice trays and you have to twist and pop them out is so horrible a task? Do you realize how many people in the world would be so excited to be able to make ice. Talk about a 1st world attitude and perspective. Goodness. Yes, be thankful for your ice maker, but be reasonable and have so thoughtfulness in your comments. You and your boys did great. Being uncomfortable and knowing you will be okay is a great teaching point.
If I may, a few recommendations. Use a camelback drinking system. Use life straws to filter water or boil first. Bring Celtic sea salt and add to water. Never use drink mixes in a camel back. They mold.
Dehydrated meal packs with saddle bags on the bike. Carry more and your backpack with a camel back is extra space.
Do not use distance as the only measurement. Use time and or distance. Plan deliberate hydration stops. A camelback is 1.5-2 liters each. Plenty of water with Celtic salt brine added.
Plan deliberate stops where everyone gets plenty of rest and resupply.
You continue to inspire many as a father, husband and provider.
If the first plan fails, Good. Reevaluate and try again.

You should drink liquids that are close to your core temperature. Drinking iced drinks is not good for you period. I would think you would've read that in all your health research. 😬

Snacks into the movies are the only way to go. Hate it but the options at the theaters are pure garbage.
Justin should watch some videos on AT thru hikers to learn how to pack food and pack for the biking trip. They do it for 4 plus months and have the system down.

Justin has a revelation: he has a high maintenance mindset. Ice water electrolyte drink is a high maintenance luxury not readily available on a remote wilderness mountain top. Do some more survival training, learn how to meet your bodily needs with your wits, be secure that you can survive with very little help. And then find ways to add the luxuries of your desire with the least amount of effort. What you desire for comfort and treat yourself. I’m proud that you are heading back so soon to finish what you started. 👍😁
