Some people seem confused here. His point is that you can get really good prints even on an inexpensive machine. Bambu is great, I love my Bambu printers. But what they offer is ease of use and convenience. You can get great prints on even cheap printers with a bit of tuning.

My point is that it's a "cheap shot" to compare the Ender to a P1S using a ridiculous test cube as the "equalizer" and basically "gaslighting" the amazing ability (comparatively) of the P1S when looking at the complete performance envelope. It's just not an honest presentation of the value of the P1S if the only real talking point is the difference in cost. There's a reason they're so cheap. It comes across as a feeble marketing push to get rid of inventory.

I'm a strong supporter of starting out with a printer "kit". The Ender 3 is a nice balance of price, ease of assembly, and relatively easy start-up. There's the advantage of it having one of the biggest communities, if not the biggest community using it; there's always someone you can ask questions of.
It's a great tinkerer's platform, a good learning platform, and a good place to start before diving into a more expensive platform.

Unless I didn't catch it Chuck, you missed (for me) a major selling point of the Ender 3. It's completely open source. You can go to Creality for spares but you don't have to. I've been running my (almost) stock E3 for over 4 years. I print on a cheap Garulite surface with Aquanet and it seems like it's never going to wear out. I bought a $12 third party all metal extruder that has worked perfectly over the years and that's pretty much it. I can't count the spools of filament that have been through this printer. There's a lot of printer manufacturers out there that neglect their old machines but the E3 has a wealth of spares and support the world over. You could build an E3 yourself without a single Creality part in the build. It's a great design.

I started out on and Ender 3 Pro 3 years ago. Solid printer, learned a lot about printing. Printed over 20Kgs of Prints over that time. Over the holiday last year I upgraded to a P1S and haven't looked back. I have over 700 hours of prints on it now without any issues.
It's a nice next level upgrade.

I almost bought a P1P. had it in my cart. Then I started thinking of closed parts and firmware on the bamboo. I decided to pick up used creality machines and give them the TH3D parts and firmware upgrade. My original Ender 3 Pro I bought as a refurb unit 4 years ago is still pumping out ABS parts for our business sitting it its plywood box.

Hi Chuck - well... it is not just the slicer. I would safely state that the whole experience of taking a Bambu out of the box, open Bambu Slicer - and doing nothing at all - they will get immediate excellent results. A 1st time new-to-3D-printing users very often won't assemble and adjust an Ender 3 properly: the bed will be wobbly, eccentric nuts will be too tight or too wobbly... Not to mention bedleveling. My biggest concern about printers that do "everything" is that people will learn less - a lot less - and that's sad. About learning, we agree: there is a LOT to learn from an Ender, as a first machine. EDIT: I need to point out that in some countries, like Brazil, there are HUGE 3D Printing communities, but they CANNOT afford much more than an Ender 3... so, it will continue to sell A LOT. In this sense, there are better machines to buy if you are on a budget: an ELEGOO Neptune 4 gives so much more than an Ender 3, and it is only a little bit more expensive. There are plenty of better options for people on a budget. PS: love your channel, I like you a lot 😀

@@FilamentFridayDon’t worry Chuck, you’ve been doing such a valuable teachings on YT. I think there is a Bambu “cult” growing, as if no other printers are worth anything - which is silly. My critic to this video is related to one of the first sentences you said in this video: “it’s all in software, in the slicer”. And that I don’t agree. A P1S comes completely adjusted out of the box… and if you buy an Ender 3 kit, you could get a decent printer but only if you really know all the steps to completely adjust it properly - mechanically speaking, even before you tackle slicing settings.
Bambus are excellent products, it is not just fluffiness - there is actual value and quality there.
Lastly, lots of Bambu owners are behaving in a hateful way… they’ve been shaming anyone that didn’t or couldn’t buy a Bambu - as it was a stupid decision to buy anything else. This has to stop. Even more when their justification is “you don’t need to learn and master - Bambu has it all figured out”. Cheering ignorance is the worst.

As someone who started 3d printing when the Anet A6 first released, way before the ender 3, the Anet only worked for 3-4 prints and then I couldn't make it work anymore. I upgraded to Ender 3 later and finally I could print something, but truth is, I've spent way too many hours just trying to make it work, unclogging the hotend, changing failing PSU, motherboard, drivers, extruder gears etc, the ratio was one successful large print // one part failure // one complete re-calibration. The Bambu lab is garantie to work for many, many prints without hassle and will give unmatched quality prints out of the box, saving you a lot of time and money in the end.

I agree you can get really good prints with the ender 3 however you also have to factor in the build quality and amount of faff that comes with it. For me I had a warped bed that was a nightmare to level. This was actually coupled with the uprights not being cut level so even getting the frame square was difficult. I can't even count the number of times I had to reassemble the ender 3. My thoughts are if you are interested in tinkering with the machine a lot (which is fun to begin with) the ender is great and cheap but if you want to jump in and just get printing then other more expensive options are probably better if you can afford.

I started on an Ender3 back in 2018 and it carried me through until I bought my first Prusa. The Ender3 was a great printer as it taught me pretty much everything on troubleshooting a printer. The Prusa (ended up buying 2) was my work horse printers until I got my P1P, the corexy platform changed everything for me. I saved some money and sold my Prusas to get 2 P1S.

One thing I have noticed is there is a HUGE amount of "brag factor" in 3d printing. Far too often I hear people say, or see them write, about what is the "best" printer for nothing more than "I'm better than you because I have this thing" and very little actual reasons on why it is truly better. Better is subjective. Just like with cars there is no perfect solution. A 25 year old honda civic with worn shocks could actually be a better choice for commuting in stop and go traffic than a $300000 lambo. It all depends on your needs. You can bang a nail in just effectively with a rock you find for free in your garden than a $100 name branded hammer. Most people just won't be impressed with you not spending money. I'm also amazed that so many people will spend so much on a printer and they only ever seem to print benchys. They don't really seem to do anything with their printers other than brag about "Look how fast I can print this thing".

I actually built my first and second 3D printer, and there was a lot of things I learned from building and tweaking them. That was what I wanted though, and I went into it knowing at the time 3D printing at home was a tinker's thing. I think that is a consideration however too, if you don't want to tinker and you just want it to work the Bambu printers will do that, but you are going to pay the premium for it. I do however agree, if you are willing to put a little tinker time into them the Creality and clones can make some really good prints. I would just say temper the expectation of what time you are going to need to put into it in the tuning time.
All of that above said, tinkering and figuring it out will bring with it a lot of learning. The 3D printing community will help a lot too in the journey. I'd almost compare it to Apple vs Android.

I bought an ender 3...then a refurb enter 3, then a Voxelab Aquillo.... I didn't understand how much I learned dealing with those three essentially same printers. All three vary by different things, but everything I learned from one has applied to the others.
I put myself on the Prusa XL waiting list early, so early that by the time it was ready to roll out 2 years later, I was almost to the point of cancelling just because I was tired of waiting. The few little issues i've had (almost entirely filament or stupid user based), have all been diagnosed based on what I learned on the $500 spent on those original 3 printers. $500 spent used to learn to utilized a $2500 printer down the road. The choice of schools to use that as a low cost entry point is a good one.

I followed Chuck's tips and with his help I was able to tweak my Ender to produce "good" prints. But then I became obsessed in getting the "perfect print". Now granted I learned a lot and had a lot of fun tweaking and upgrading the Ender. But I rarely used it for projects, it was always calibration prints. I've printed hundreds of calibration test models but only about 4-5 actual models. A couple of cases for my MisterFPGA board, the Buck Rogers Starfighter and some other knick-knacks.

There are a few differences between the Ender3 and the Ender Pro. The wider Y axis extrusion is one major difference. The Pro also comes with a magnetic bed and a removable flexible print surface. The non-Pro has the same print surface glued to the bed. Also the Pro always came with the 32 bit board, the non-pro originally had and 8 bit board, but Creality stopped shipping those 8 bit boards as soon as they could make enough 32 bit boards (the parts shortage during the pandemic doomed the 8 bit board). Finally, the Pro came with a UL approved Meanwell power supply, the non-pro unit came with a cheaper supply Chinese made unit. Creality would latter have its own power supplies certified by UL, and then they stopped buying them from Meanwell. I think the extruder units in the Pro well a little better made, with heat set inserts in the plastic, and better injection molded parts. My Ender 3 Pro hasn't had a failure of the extruder, many Ender 3 owners have replaced their plastic extruders with metal ones.
I've upgraded mine to an E3D Revo CR hot end, and have added a WhamBamm flex metal build surface with PEX (whambam's own PEI formula). I'll probably add a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W and run klipper on it. I will pan on moving the electronics and power supply under the printer by raising it up using skirts from the Voron Switchwire Ender 3 conversion. I also might mod it to use the Voron Stealth burner toolhead, and replace the extruder with a Voron M4 dual gear drive unit. I will keep the V wheels, they work fine for this printer.
I did buy a basket case Ender 3 Pro off Ebay for under $80, and I'm converting that to a Voron switchwire. It will serve as a test bed for klipper. My current Ender 3 Pro is printing the parts for the Switchwire conversion. I moved that printer into a closet and put a cardboard box around it to act as an enclosure. It now prints ABS perfectly, with no warping, and no layer separation. Stock software and stock Prusa slicer settings (using Voron recommended settings for layers, walls, and infill).

My field is computers and programming rather than 3D printers, but it's basically the same. To learn programming, a 10-year-old computer is just as good as a modern one. The original idea of the Raspberry Pi project was to create a cheap platform for students to learn programming. The first Pi didn't have anywhere near the power of the PCs of the time, but it was enough to learn the basics of programming and the GPIO pins were a great way to tinker with hardware.

I watch this when it came out and was shocked with the vitriol of some comments. I do 3d printing for fun starting off with an Ender-3 Pro and still run a newer version. When I got started the $200 was a big deal and it might be for someone starting today. I think the point of video is that it may not be as slick as more expensive printer, but for someone just interested in trying 3D printing or doesn't have the money an Ender-3 is not a bad thing. This is of course if you know the issues you can be facing but even then there is a lot of people will to help if you ask. The profiles are a big help and will make a difference on a stock Ender. I am even using them on a CR-10s pro V2.
If someone has the money for a $600 printer, hey go for it. Not everyone does. Even now that I can pull together $600 if I wanted, I would really be looking at getting a couple newer version Ender-3s. I've printed TPU on my Ender 3 V2, even with a Bowden setup (just reduced the speed down to 20mm/sec), so it's not the impossible task that many would have you believe. I have a direct drive now, so now I can go a bit faster (I think I do 40mm/sec). I don't have any other printers to compare it to, but it will certainly work. I can't imagine that the v3 would have done anything to mess up the ability to print TPU.

Use of use, convenience, and speed would all be very useful for a small high school environment. I don't really want the students mucking about with the height and tuning themselves as more likely to put it out than tune it right. In that case is P1S a better option?

    • @ChrisTietjen_00

P1S is way better for high school students. They'll get the idea of what's possible and will potentially see it as a part of their future. Without the speed, auto leveling and general precision of the P1S the 3d printing future looks pretty lame. The Ender 3 is too far back in the 3d printer timeline. I'd even go so far as to say the "bed slinger" format is hitting the twilight.

I'm very happy because I can print in my shed in winter, easily remove the parts from the pei bed, swap out filaments quickly, print tpu material, and overall super reliable. I improved my print speeds significantly using custom cura profiles. I might add a ceramic hotend to allow greater print speeds by extruding out more filament faster and without heating difficulties.

4+ years rocking an Ender 3 Pro, the only "upgrade" I really recommend is a 12V 80mm PC fan for the heatsink and maybe a 5015 12V blower fan for layer cooling, the original 40mm fans are really bad. I also use the "Petsfang" cooler with direct drive conversion.
I remember a problem with the fan on the printer board, like you need to switch the port to keep it always on.

My journey with the Ender 3 printers has been a series of transformative upgrades. Initially, addressing the weak fan was crucial for maintaining optimal cooling during long prints. Next, recognizing the limitations of the default magnetic bed sheet, I upgraded to a textured PEI surface for more reliable adhesion. Swapping the Bowden tube for an all-metal hot end eliminated worries about potential breakdowns, ensuring consistent performance over time. Transitioning to a direct drive setup with a printable bracket further enhanced print quality and reliability. Upgrading to the SKR Mini motherboard provided a significant boost in functionality and control. Lastly, constructing an enclosure helped create a stable printing environment for consistent results.
These modifications have made my Ender 3 printers indispensable assets to my business over the past four years. Previously, printing ABS was a challenge due to unreliable extrusion, but discovering the bambu printer changed everything. Now, with the bambu printer, my 4 unit Ender 3 printers have become redundant, as one bambu-equipped printer can handle all my printing needs efficiently.
Addressing the weak fan and upgrading various components have truly unlocked the full potential of the Ender 3. I'm incredibly grateful for the reliability and versatility these upgrades have brought to my business. In fact, I'm in the process of purchasing another printer to further expand my operations. Yea youtube does make it seem like Bambu printers are plug and play. But looking at their reddit communities it isn't. You'll still run into conflicting slicer settings, incorrect tension, temp, retraction, etc. Keep in mind the people that are speed running benchys out-of-the-box are likely just using the custom-tuned benchy gcode that comes shipped (afaik) or on their software suite. I agree with CHEP, the printer is the "dumb" part, the software/slicer is the smart one.
I think your CR-20 can have comparable performance with less than 50usd worth of upgrades and maybe 1 or 2 hours of work :) Take a look into what Klipper firmware has done for bed slingers. Heck, an Ender 3 holds the WR for the fastest benchy. CNC kitchen still uses an ender 3 for demonstrating print quality and speed (cht nozzles)
If you got the money, sure go for bambu's mid-high range options. But don't expect minimal intervention.

Hyper fast mode is silly on my Microswiss all metal extruder ender 3. I just did a wood print with hyper fast mode with fuzzy skin enabled fully expecting it to clog and nope just went along and spit out a great model. The wood and fuzzy skin hid the thiiiick layer lines

Eh, this is too simple of a test. I have a heavily tuned and modified Ender 3 Pro. But my workhorse is the P1P in a WhamBam hotbox. I haven't had a single failure on the P1P with over 100+ prints in multiple materials including CF Nylon.

Don't think cali cubes quite cut it for testing anymore tbh, as soon as you move into more complicated prints the print time on ender 3's become ridiculous in comparison, if you have an ender 3 you can still use it yes, but going to buy one now new makes no sense at all, then buying used if it's your first printer is going to be a tough time of problem solving.
Given you can get into a core xy printer now for 300 or less, printing around 3-5 times faster, I don't see the ender series lasting that much longer.
Enders in general can be a pit of lost time, fixing and maintaining, a lot of people are just done with that now.

Thanks for showing the E3 V3 SE, I ruined my print bed on my second print. The filament stuck so well it destroyed the sticker. I mean, I have metal showing.
    So what did I do?
Grabbed my spare Biqu B1 Springsteel Sheet and plonked it down and just started printing.
I have a video of the results on my 2nd channel. Because I decided to live stream a over 50 year old building a new 3D printer.
Also, about the Ender 3 Pro. A good printer. But if the buyer just wants to print stuff for cosplay and so, they don't need to know the bare bones of the machine. I watched a novice take 7 hours to build her E3 Pro on a live stream. SMH, how could someone sell her that machine when she just wanted to print stuff. And I could continue. It made me angry that they decided for her that she needed to know the basics, while the E3 V3 SE is a 20 minute build, dropped stuff...

I've been using a heavily modified ender 3 pro for about 4 years now. Yes, it prints decently, but it was not trivial to get there. Many hours spent tinkering, tuning, messing with settings, trying out different mods to make it a more reliable printer, etc. I'm about done with all that. I want the designing and actual printing to be my focus with this hobby, not the tinkering/tuning of the printer. Buying today I'd get a bambu A1 mini, only because the full size A1 is on recall. If the full size A1 is available, that's what I'd go for.
I'm not saying it's either the printing as the hobby or the tuning as the hobby; it's very much both. But I want it to be more like 90% designing/printing, 10% tuning, rather than the 60% designing/printing, 40% tuning it's been with my ender. When it prints good, it's very good. But it wasn't very reliable until I did all the mods I did. Even now, things occasionally get out of whack, and fixing issues is mostly easy, but the bambu printers
Once you factor in all the features the bambu printers offer, they're a pretty good value, even against a $200 ender 3. A closer comparison would be the A1 at $399, but since it's on recall (and being handled excellently by bambu btw, imagine a creality recall ;-) ), the A1 mini for $299 is a great printer for those who want to dip their toes into the hobby of 3d printing without picking up a side hobby of working on the printer. You may spend under $200 on an ender 3, but you will spend several times that in your own time and effort to get it printing good prints and more importantly, reliably.
Good comparison, you just have to keep in mind there's more than one mindset when it comes to this amazing hobby.

I have been recommending Bambulab printers to the non-tech savvy who wants a printer that works and the Ender 3 if they want another hobby. But I'll admit that I've been guilty for neglecting of not recommending Prusa Printers and newer/kitted Ender 3s that have autobed leveling preinstalled to those same group of people.

I would agree he chose the most mid tier printer they offer to a cheap printer. A Bambu A1 Mini or A1 or even the Anycubic are almost at the same price point and is very beginner friendly. Plus no bed leveling required as these printers have auto bed leveling and thats including that the A1 Mini has a Camera, Wifi Capability, and a touch screen. Plus, for some bucks more you can get the AMS which you cant do multicolor on the ender without something like the palette.
    Very biased.

Multicolor on an Ender is possible with far cheaper options than the Palette or an AMS. The cheapest kit I'm aware of is the 3D Chameleon which right now is $179

I started off 3 years ago with CHEP videos watched everything under the sun relating to Ender 3. And learned to much to list. I just purchased my 2nd X1C I need the best of the best for home printing for my business I still run my Ender neos “for now” but I’ll keep my Enders still. Im swaying past creality and going towards Bambu now. The extra money is worth the price for near perfection for FDM and getting items printed out faster for business. Creality starting to lose relevance now just Bambu price point is what holding creality in the game right now

You can absolutely try out with a cheap Ender 3 to see if you like 3D printing before you buy a good printer like P1S. A slight downside is that the answer to the question is much more likely to be a resounding "NO!" with the Ender 3.
I started with an even worse printer than Ender 3, and still have my upgraded Ender 3 around. But I knew I signed up for a 3D printer building hobby, prepared to tinker with it instead of printing. If the ambition had been to get actual printing done, it would have been thrown in the trash after a few months.

    • @NWGR
      @NWGR 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That's exactly how it was for me. I nearly swore off the hobby until better printers were available cheaper because of my ender 3 experience. But I did persevere and have it printing decently now, but doing it again, bambu all the way.
