After 10 years of 20W being engraved in my brain I was surprised that I didn't have a meltdown sooner. I can't wait to try it up in the flight levels. Thanks a lot Das! 😀
Raul, awesome video. Reminds me of when we I was a kid and we moved from flying the Archer II to the Turbo Arrow III with my Dad. KGCC (Gillette, WY) to KMYL (McCall, ID) over the Tetons instead of around them. The only bad thing I remember was no fuel/bathroom stops in the Arrow! I also remember taking off with all of us from JackPot NV in the summer once and I recall Dad running the numbers several times. I know it isn't extremely high there, but the DA had to be close to 10,000 in the summer heat. Mom, Dad, my sister and me with baggage. We had to be close to gross.
Hi Russell, sounds like me when I flew around the Tetons in the Cherokee Six. But you are right, now I can fly over them. The turbo can make a huge go/no go difference. But your dad was extremely wise to run those numbers several times. The turbo arrow is a pretty awesome airplane! It sounds like you guys had a lot of memories in it! Hi Scott! It was a bit of a transition from the Cherokee Six but I took my time with 10 dual and 10 solo just to be on the safe and comfortable side and that helped tremendously. The Cherokee Six will slaughter the Saratoga on useful load but the Saratoga is a performer for sure. It's a great airplane! 😀
Hi buddy 😀 Having a turbo makes a great difference. It’s been a wonderful experience for sure my friend. I want to do my first flight up in the flight levels but I wanted to try the oxygen system and the endurance first before flying up there. Have you guys been flying around lately?
I sure envy you my friend! I haven't been able to fly since April for various reasons. I went out this morning early (8:30AM) just to do some touch and goes..... My airport, KAVQ, was sooo busy, I turned around and went home. The pattern was full of students, and three or four more airplanes were getting ready to go up, (training) right next to me.... I need to go some place... Unfortunately, we're leaving for Oshkosk in about a week and a half.. Driving.....
Man, that sounds like how Centennial gets very often. But I may have started to notice a slight decrease in normal activity probably due to fuel prices. The good news here is that we have three runways been used simultaneously so that helps a lot with keeping up with the flow. There have been times that if I don't get out early enough I turn back around like you did. This is why I love to practice at those remote airports. Have fun at Osh my friend! 😀
200kts on 55% power? What GPH were you seeing? That's impressive. Also, really nice that your Oxy is plumbed into the aircraft. Call signs can get fun. Now and then, ATC thinks my old carrier acquired Decathlons - oops!
No, no, I wish my friend. 😀 That was over 200 mph on 65% power. On that setting I'll normally burn between 16-18 gph depending on outside temperatures. The oxygen is extremely convenient to have and with the valve regulator that I bought I can set the oxygen levels to what I need and not waste extra unused oxygen. All along I was doing a great job on call signs but for some reason on this flight I got all mixed up. 😀
Nice flight, I have exactly the same plane (same year), you're 200mph with a nice tailwind, probably going to be more pain on the way back. I have GAMIs and at 11,000 I lean to 13.5gph (WOT, 2300rpm), get a nice 150kts TAS with cool CHTs
A beauty about a turbo is taking advantage of a wider range of wind levels. On my way back I was doing around 180 mph. It wasn't too bad. Your numbers sound just right. So far I have clocked 152kts @ 65% TAS at 10,000, 154 @ 11,000 and at 17,500 I was doing 162kts @ 65% and 174kts @ 75%. But at 65% I burn between 16-18 depending on outside temperatures. So far 17.5 is as far as I have tried her but looking forward to the flight levels soon. 13.5gph is incredible and very well worth the investment. I've been looking into getting GAMIs so we'll see how soon I can get that done. Thanks Sherif!
@@FlyingDirty oh absolutely the best investment, they pay off very quickly with today's fuel prices, you must a good engine monitor though to properly lean. It's gentler on the engine and much less emissions and lead for the same distance. I emailed you my engine data for one of the long flights, that can help you make some decisions.
Do you use the landing gear override on takeoff? I have had issues with the gear safety system not letting me bring the wheels up so I've been setting the override during run up and then removing it at cruise.
I’ve not had any issues myself. Once I takeoff I quickly accelerate to near VLO and retract the gear prior to VLO. After takeoff the gear should not retract if the speed is below 93 kts (depending on the adjustment). So I retract mine upon reaching between 95-100 kts. I’ve used the override only for doing short field takeoffs with 25 degrees of flaps when climbing at slower speeds. But if you are at 100 kts and your gear doesn’t retract then it’s more than likely the gear speed adjustment.
While training in multiple aircraft I would get in the habit of just looking at the placard for the first hour or so of flying so I wouldn't mix up the N#'s
Hi buddy! That was pretty natural when training and when I was also going from aircraft to aircraft. But it’s a whole different story when you’ve been flying the same aircraft for a decade and have the call sign imprinted in your brain and suddenly fly a different one.
Fantastic flight! This is the dream, flying the states with my fam. One question, now that you've had the long-haul in the Saratoga will you fly it more than the Cherokee 6?
Hi AJ, that’s a great question. Since I mostly fly alone or with my son and I would prefer to get to the destination faster I would say yes for for flying the Saratoga more. But for local and family trips it will have to be the Cherokee Six. It will be extremely challenging to get all 4 plus fuel and luggage in the Saratoga. Thanks buddy 😀
