  • Attack Helicopters
The attack helicopters are force multipliers for infantry. They have two primary roles: first, to provide direct and accurate close air support for ground troops; and second, the anti-tank role to destroy enemy’s armor. This helps in clearing enemies’ tanks, armoured fighting vehicles and overwhelming number of ground forces. In today’s video we are going to discuss about the existing & future armed helicopters of Indian Armed force. The objective behind making this video is to give you a complete idea of India’s attack helicopters capabilities.
    Mi-17 Upgrade
The IAF reportedly operates over 220 Mi-17 series helicopters that form the backbone of its vertical lift component which are extensively used for tactical missions such as troops transport, assault, special operations, ferrying and air dropping supplies in high altitude areas, search and rescue and disaster management.
Under the Mi-17 upgrade project, 86 helicopters will be modified, which includes 54 Mi-17 and 32 Mi-17 1V variants. The upgrade is aimed to facilitate Mi-17 helicopters with state-of-the-art and advanced electronic warfare and surveillance equipment. The New systems will include Smart MFDs, satnav suite, EW suite, MAWS, RWR, IFF, Wx radar, SDR, CMDS etc.
Indian air force is also upgrading its 4 squadron of Mi-17 helicopter for dedicated for light attack role. These helicopters are going to be armed with ATGMs and rockets. They will be integrated with the Spike NLOS with a range of 25km which will give the helicopters a massive stand-off range against tanks.
    One Squadron upgrade of Mi-35
As per latest report from the Hindu, the single squadron of Mi-35 attack helicopters in the Indian Air Force (IAF) are undergoing a complete overhaul in Russia which will extend these helicopter lifespan by six years keeping them in service beyond this decade. The overhaul is being done in two batches. The first batch is currently in Russia and once they are done, the second batch would be sent. The entire overhaul should be completed by mid-2023.
    81 ALH WSI Rudra
Rudra is the Weaponised version of the Advanced Light Helicopter (Dhruv) designed and developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). It is a multi-role helicopter of 5.8 Ton class powered by two Shakti Engines. The Rudra features integrated sensors, weapons and an electronic warfare suite. It has an Integrated Defensive Aids Suite (IDAS) from Saab AB. The electronic warfare suite is fully integrated into the glass cockpit. Rudra is armed with a French Nexter 20 mm turret gun, Belgian 70 mm rockets, and MBDA air-to-air missile and air-to-ground missiles, such as the Helina anti-tank missile. Along with 2 crew the helicopter can carry 12-14 passengers. Army and air force currently operates 75 and 16 ALH Rudra respectively.
    114+65 LCH Prachand
Indian Air Force has requirement of 65 LCH and army has requirement of 114 of them. On 30th March 2022, the Cabinet committee on security chaired by PM Narendra Modi has given approval for procurement of 15 LCH - light combat Helicopter limited series production or LSP. On 3rd October, IAF has raised its 1st squadron of LCH at Jodhpur. Indian Army has raised its 1st squadron in Bengaluru on 1st of June which will be moved to Missamari Air base. The Indian Army has three Army Aviation brigades in Missamari, Leh and Jodhpur.
    22+6 Apache AH-64E
Apache AH-64 is the most lethal helicopter in the world. It is literally a flying tank. The Indian ministry of defence had sanctioned the procurement of 39 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters from the U.S. IAF procured 22 Apache in September 2015. India and the US signed another contract for the acquisition of six Apaches for the Indian Army during US President Donald Trump’s visit to New Delhi. There has been delay in the deliveries of these due to the COVID pandemic and are now scheduled to begin deliveries in early 2024.

      Exactly
Luh, lah tech already developed. So mass production possible. Tejus mk1a tech also fully developed. So transfer tata. So hal tata both produced tejus mk1a. At least 200 no. At least squiredron deficiency makeup. This is very urgent need to make up sqiredron.

Feels like a waste of money to upgrade those Mi35s and Mi17s to armed roles.
Better to buy more Apaches and LCH since they will serve for a long time and are obviously much more advanced.
Chinook are needed too, for obvious reasons. We are lacking in heavy lift department.
Also, why aren't the attack helicopters transferred to AAC instead of the IAF? Attack helicopters obviously exist to supplement the army and provide ground attack and support, hence AAC should have them instead of IAF. US does the same.

You clearly haven't seen how powerful & versatile Russian helicopters are don't you
BJP is a Western stooge & has drunk their propaganda
Look up Ka-52, Ka-50 black shark, Mi-28 Havoc
They have thicker armor & even have pilot ejection seats (Apache doesn't)
      & more weapons
BTW, upgrading saves time & cost than buying
USA upgraded black hawks with weapon carrying capabilities so yeah not a waste

Let me tell you something without a longbow radar like on the apache most of these attack helicopters are just giant flying targets for cheap manpads. With an overhead radar you can detect and destroy armed divisions out of range of short range anti air and manpad missiles, given we have long range anti tank missiles ourself

    • @IndianDefenseAnalysis

You can’t mount longbow in every helo. They are heavy and reduces the flight altitude and payload capacity.

With all the forces combined we need a fleet of Attack Helicopters:
A)96 AH64D/E(64 AW AH1 purchased from Royal Airforce & upgraded)
    48 for Army & 48 for IAF
    B)96 Mi28 replacing all older Mi17SH,Mi24 & Mi35 from service.(48 for Army & 48 for IAF)
C)120 IMRH Armed(48 for Army,36 for IAF,36 for Navy LHD)
D)48 Ka52K(For Navy Deck Based Operations)
E)240 ALH Rudra(120 for Army,72 for IAF,48 for Navy/Coast Gaurds) for Scout Role
    F)180 LCH(120 for Army & 60 for IAF)

Disagree with Mi 28 and Ka52k. We don't really need armed choppers for navy bte.
Apaches and LCH are enough to replace our Hinds, and the Mi17s can be replaced with Chinook and later IMRH. We need more of these.

How survivable are our helicopters vs manpads, and anti aircraft SAMS in general?25% of the Kamov Ka-52 was shot down in Ukraine war. Need the ability to install DIRCM(infrared laser) to burn out heat seeking missiles that try to shoot down choppers. Also install Electronic warfare suites on Prachand, and air to air mistrals so can take out drones and enemy choppers with ease. Strong need to protect choppers with electronic jammers. Great news that the Mi-17 has Spike NLOS with a range of 25km Should be able to blow up enemy vehicles out of range of manpads! One Squadron upgrade of Mi-35 and 28 Apache don't make sense. Smarter to standardize on the Prachand. Apache cost $155 million each, prachand cost 32 million. Can buy 5 for one Apache!
