  • Noted Philadelphia doctor Henry McKee Minton founded the Sigma Pi Phi fraternity in 1904 as part of a lifetime of public service.
Minton was born in Columbia, South Carolina, on December 25, 1871, and spent his early years in the midst of the Reconstruction era following the Civil War as his parents worked integrally with other African Americans to rebuild democracy in the state and nation. They left in 1877, when U.S. President Hayes withdrew U.S. Army troops, but the family's house still stands in Columbia.
The goals and ideals of Reconstruction continued to influence Minton, and his story has much to tell us today.
Reconstruction and the Legacy of Henry M. Minton is a documentary project of the Center for Civil Rights History and Research and Sigma Pi Phi.
