  • It has been a while since I posted. I was busy prepping and helping to organize the WAS in person conference in Calgary.
Just sharing my typical winter prep. I have been doing a lot traveling/hiking this summer which has affected my beekeeping. Most are at weight. I did add some fondant which I typically don't do.
Colonies are all wrapped up here to reduce activity. 1st part of the video, me adding top insulation was done mid September. Second part was done 2 days ago. They are now ready for winter. I will fill in the gaps inside the mini-enclosure with styrofoam. Unlike the prairies we don't get much snow here. If I did get enough snow to cover the colonies I wouldn't bother with the enclosure as the snow quincey provides all the required protection. We do get the extreme cold so I compensate extra insulation/protection.
I will purchase a couple of CO2 sensors. I think I have found one that will work. I will carve out a cavity in the fondant, so I can get the level just above the cluster. My hypothesis is that the heating events in winter is actually the cluster loosening to release heat and CO2. It typically happens when it is below -30C.
