Here in Colorado, we have lots of sun, over 300 days throughout the year including winter. With the frigid temps we are experiencing right now I added another layer of double bubble. I already added an inner layer insulation above the sugar board. and below the top lid. Thank you for the video. And you're right, looks don't matter! Function is everything.
As far as bee hive winterization goes, functionality over form anytime :) Speaking of which I wrapped up my hives with the insulated hive top/winter feeder based on your design. They're looking promising, good thing too, building those things took quite a bit of time and effort >.
Great video. I love the idea about wrapping bubble wrap around several hives to share body heat. We wrap with two in styrofoam as well. I am in northern BC. Just curious, how cold does it get there during the winter. I just like to know how much colder you get there than we get. Anyways Etienne, always interesting watching. Cheers
Should I plug up my top notch entrance ...just leave the bottom reducer open on small size ? I put in about 6 inches of foam R-5 in a deep box and pluncked that on top of the hive, closed up the bottom board and then wrapped the hives as well with bee cozys. I used to use a hot box and left my bottom board screen open but bees still died so trying something else.
What was the problem with the older sensors? I made my wraps with styrofoam held in place with bubble foil around the outside. I used velcro strips to hold the end of the wraps together, but now it strikes me that maybe that was unnecessary- i could have just taped the ends together and cut the tape if i wanted to take it apart.
No worries, prevent bees from chewing the styrofoam and protect the edges when I pry them out. Most of the pieces are going into there 4 winter so by protecting them I get to re-use them much longer.

Nice! It looks so cozy ☺️ Wind is a challenge in my area, thinking of using plywood or hard foam for a simple windbreak.
You allready have snow. In germany we have had today plus twanny. What a pretty differenz.
yep... just got back from my 1st cross country ski... winters here are like a marathon...
That looks like winter. Ugh

Oh I have so many questions ! :)
Like what?
What do you see in temp traces once you do that? Internal Humidity?
Coming soon, typically takes a 3-4 days for things to stabilize after a major disturbance. I will take readings later this week.
Can you link me a video that better show the set up regarding the screen bottom for winter. Thanks

Doesn't have to look pretty, just get the job done👍you have your sensors on them so you can see some info that way.
what tape do you use?

@@etiennetardif6552 Thanks. Why do you wrap the insulation ?
wind protection, solar gain reduction, create dead air space around colonies. It reduces the rate of cooling. Same reason we wrap a house...
@@etiennetardif6552 sorry. I didn't mean the hives. I get that. Why wrap the insulation you put inside the top box on top of your feeder?
