  • The electricity minister wants to relook at the targets set for decommissioning old coal-fired power plants. So with cabinet having met to look at this, what are the best options going forward? Hartmut Winkler, professor of physics and energy at UJ speaks to #eNCA Courtesy #DStv403

Imagine if you ran a company where the staff only work 50 or 60% of the time - and only produce 50 or 60% of the products they were employed to make. And on top of that they demand a full salary at the end of the month - and when the company runs out of money - they demand a pay increase. That's Eskom for you - and we are the people paying their salaries.

Is it really that difficult to implement feed-in and/or net-metering? Surely the excess being generated by residential and business rooftop solar installs can make a significant cumulative dent in the shortfall during daytime at least, and reduce the economic impact on businesses? We'd still have loadshedding through the night, but that's at least better than the status quo... Perhaps government could look at pumped storage (using the daytime excess power to pump water into hydro dams for use at night) to supplement evening production as well?

South Africa having perfect conditions for solar and wind turbines, I can tell you that we would be in a much better space right now if the R1 billion rand that is apparently stolen from Eskom every month due to corruption was instead invested into renewable power generation.

Solar won't fix the problem. South Africa's peak electricity demand is about 6 to 7 pm WHEN THE SUN IS NOT SHINING!
At a peak earlier this week all of the PV (solar panels) were producing a total of 67MW. That is just over 1% of the nameplate capacity.
Even if all the solar panels in the world were added to the SA grid it would not keep the lights on.
By June it will be dark at peak power time and the solar panels will produce zero.
So, fine, install solar panels - as much as you want. But you have a choice: go "green" or have electricity. You can't have both.
