It's almost midnight on the 31st of December 2023 and I am 71 years old and this song will be played when I have gone but not to early this is my song to be played when my coffin disappears. Anyway no more morbid stuff to all everywhere have a great New Year and as we say in Scotland " Lang may your lum reek "
I’m sitting watching this some 50 years after I first bought the album, The Impossible Dream’ and it simultaneously brings a smile to my face, a lump in my throat and tear to my eye.
True, Alex was the equivalent of Frank Zappa and the Allman Brothers Band in originality. And he could quote Brecht! NEXT!!! I played that at my fathers funeral.
They couldn't be pigeonholed by the music industry. SAHB never fitted into any one music genre. The powers that be are always wary of artists that can't be conveniently labelled
Your comment brings to mind a good book, How the Scots Invented the Modern World. No mention of Alex Harvey changing the world, but it gives you good reasons to wave the Saltire from Ben Nevis or Arthur's Seat or wherever you happen to be. First heard this on Cleveland radio about 1974, and have always loved that guitar solo at 3:10 - wish it was longer. I still have it on vinyl.
I wholeheartedly agree! I was born a little late to appreciate his and the band’s talent but if I’d born earlier I surely would! Makes me cry every time I here this tune ! See my comment
Pure, unadulterated, perfection... in EVERY way. Lyrically, sonically, vocally, drummingly... sorry I quite forgot my grammar there. And the guitar. Zal, like all great guitarists had his own unmistakeable sound. RIP Alex, you were wonderful.
Th. Schramm
A great rock star oh so poorly underrated and forgotten in the rock world a true rock and roller but sadly unrecognised and should be in the rocknroll hall of fame! I've always loved his music I even named my son Alex after this great man
I have heard hundreds and hundreds of thousands of songs in my 26 years. When I was a boy my father played this album for me when I was 4 years old and Anthem is the ultimate reward and Alex's magnum opus. Alex Harvey is one of the few I would ever dare say is one of my idols. If you can understand the beauty and importance of this song then your life will forever be enriched by his message and his music. Although it's true, I'm worried now, I wont be worried long. Thank you Dad and thank you Alex.
Well written my friend. I was still at school when I heard the live album, I was completely blown away by it, and, seeing them perform in the legendary Christmas shows still lives with me . I’ve seen many bands in my almost 60 years… from Queen to nirvana ,and, that gig has remained vivid .
I have to say, my first impression on sahb was "what the hell is that" but for some reason i found myself listening more and more, and I am completely sold. Sensational is the right word
The most unsung rock artists of the 70s this man was fantastic and one of the true greats and so forgotten? A true legend and I love him because I named my boy after him !
When something bad happens in my life. I listen to this song and remember " Although it's true i'am worried now i won't be worried long." .... And i feel everything bad start to go away. It really is that quick....... RIP Alex. Your music was way before it's time. Great man, great band.
Beautiful. As a Scot, this tune breaks my heart. My mammy loved it, my grannie too. I saw Alex live in the 70's and pass this music on to my kids here in Sofia. Forever Scotland, forever SAHB.
I discovered them just a while ago, and it is a pity that quite no-one knows this great band! better late then ever!! such great songs and great charisma! thank you Alex!
Came from my neck of the woods ,my brother was a fan and I also ! He was a one off ,great band Alex was unique ! Wish he lived longer ,amazing 😪 taken too soon 💔
I saw SAHB when they were just Tear Gas way back in the late 60's early 70's before they hooked up with Alex we saw them at the Buckhaven miners welfare in Fife Scotland.
Being a Nazareth fan, I once went from Italy to Dumferline at the pub near the Church...there were lots of posters of Nazareth and SAHB. This Song Is One of their best tunes.
To have seen him perform live always left me with a sense of awe, to be able to hold an audience in the palm of your hand. Amazing and indeed Sensational.
This video always makes me sad especially the pictures of the newspapers saying Alex died he was a great and very talented man and thanks to him I have very happy memories of me and my dad dancing around the front room and singing to his songs when I was a child
I love the guitar solo in this song. What a tragically misunderstood band. There is something to be said for unique!Saw them mid seventies, opening for Jethro Full. Never forgot them! Great band!!!
I’m English but been going to Scotland since 1978, I love the country and the people, this is going to be played at my funeral, sometimes it’s in my head all day, amazing, original band that never got the recognition they deserved. Great to see Zal still going strong.
Ich liebe dieses Lied, seit ich es zum ersten Mal gehört habe, vor ungefähr 30 Jahren. Habe es oft gehört seitdem und das ich es wiederentdeckt habe ist wunderbar!! 🌼 Love and Peace to all of You!! ❣️
Such an underrated awesome artist and band,,,they were in a different class that's why many just didn't get them,,,Alex you're the best for me and I've seen some awesome bands but if I could I would see Sahb again ,,,bless you all ❤❤❤❤😊😊
II was born a tad too late to appreciate Alex but this song and the footage that accompanies it really set the mood for the greatness of the man and his career! I’ve loved his music now for 25 years or so and it still sounds wonderful albeit a bit melancholic! God bless you man wherever you are!
Well. Fuck. They were a great band. I'm gutted that I'm too young to have seen them live.He had this knack of being able to make you hear the story within lyrics - just look at the Delilah cover.Completely underrated band and artist. I'll forever listen guys, thank you for the tunes. RIP ALEX
I introduced him to my kids in the 90`s , which they were blown away by re their never-to-be-repeated UNIQUENESS .... akin to Bowie, among others who passionately Blaze their own trail ,,,, XXXXXX
widgeasha He introduced him to sahb back then ya dick...he obviously didn't take his kids to see them live!! most of the music I love is either before I was born or when I would've been too young to appreciate. I did go to see SAHB in early 90s in Inverness with Maggie Bell on vocals (taggart theme?) still brilliant but hardly anyone else turned up it was SAF (sad as fuck)
THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND!! 👏 BEST BAND EVER AND PERFORMANCE..I've seen their Video when I was a kid back in the Philippines, The performance is totally different from other band..It's very intertain..it looks like you're watching theatrical..AWESOME!!
The band I truly regret not seeing live. Alex was a one off. A composer, and rock star, who's stage theatrics and delivery set the scene for each song. This particular track is a fave, from fade in to fade out. Stunning guitar, great percussion underpinning the track, and the sublime Vicky Silva on backing vocals. This track has depth and presence, and I love it as much today, as when I first heard it on the vinyl LP that my brother in law made sure was part of my musical education. Thanks Stuart.
Thanks to the Burns Howff in Glasgow I/we saw the SAHB play live and on such a very small raised corner stage, They were superb. Pints went down, cigarettes smoked, music played, fighting paused, the drama played out and an unforgettable night was had by all. Carpe Diem!
This great artist is so unrecognised as a great rock and roll pioneer and so punk well before punk happened and believe me I'm as punk as they come this man is the grandaddy of British punk!
my son is 13 years old and i've only just realised that i named him after this man. this song to me is one of the most beautiful ever written. damn this band were sensational. Update..... whilst driving along boring my boy senseless with my musical taste one day he said to me " i don't hate all of your music dad, i like that one with the bagpipes at the end" My life is complete :)
Alex Harvey was like your favourite uncle who was also a bad-ass pirate, school teacher, and super hero. Saw the SAHB twice, and saw Anthem performed once. Those soaring vocals by Vicky daSilva, then the pipe band marching on stage was the ultimate surprise !
Had a good friend who passed away a while ago and we were discussing whether to play the tomahawk kid or anthem first or last. Love the old sensational to bits.
My brother texted me earlier tonight and recommended Alex Harvey Band, and specifically this song. I'm in my 60's and have never heard of this band before. Why do I get the feeling I have missed out on something utterly awesome?

Well said. It's faultless in my book. Zal's playing is other worldly.
Makes me proud.

Had the privilege and the pleasure of seeing him and the band live in the Appolo Glasgow in 1975 fabulous live performance.
Great video! Such a beautiful song, SAHB is criminally underrated.
Not for me !
He is still in my Top Five !!
Going to add this to list of songs to play at my homegoing service! Scotland's gift to the bloody world!
Saw them in Guildford a few times probably 73/74 brilliant and theatrical. Once seen never forgotten.
