This era was incredible and the stuff in 50’s in the karakoum and Himalayan. Blows my mind what these guys could do. How far they pushed themselves and the boundaries of the sport
How these guys can do this is unbelievable , they have some balls ! i brick myself watching them , i would freeze at the first 20 ft Brilliant !
I read that Don had drunk a full bottle of whiskey the night before this!
Just to be clear, the Americans tried the nw ridge. The British tried the west ridge. They are not the same!!!
Is a tight rope not cheating???
Old gold line and steel carabiners
I used to belay like that, and used goldline rope for leading. I never used rocks for chocks, but did sling stuff.
I'm 66, and watching an old fat man struggling in those old EBs makes me want to get back on some rock...
I couldn’t get my Anglo Saxon ultra wide feet into PAs nor FEBs. I moved to motorsports.
Reading the comments I would ask the question "why is guiding huge numbers on the highest peaks with Oxygen, sherpas fixing ropes and huge teams acceptable morally in a sport that at its heart is supposed to embody risk. They used to call that adventure.
These comments alone are just great. People who met them, used their gear, climbed their routes, living history
Climbing went from hard men climbing serious and committing routes to teen boys and girls competition sport climbing and bouldering.
Anything north-facing & high up in't Lakes outside of a long dry spell in summer is always going to be 'mackerel'
Best known as the "dangle and whack twins" from all the pins they placed on incredible first ascents. Our heroes!
thanks man... I have the cd but it's tucked away. appreciate you!
That look at 4:35 has me dying!
@ Mt. Everest, Incorrect, the German language in the movie correctly reflects the way German was spoken in the 50ies; I certainly do not know whether that was by design or mistake in this movie. I also have to put Horst Engards post in perspective. You are correct by today's standards but in the 50ies "conquering" the highest peaks was still a matter of national pride. Most German mountaineers were still massively influenced by Nazi doctrine. To be first, i.e. better than others, the whole idea of suffering, heroic self sacrifice for the group, the idea of one leader, a dictator in the literal sense of the word, glory for the nation... That was largely the mindset these people still had. After all, the regime had perished less than 10 years before and Nazis had been huge supporters of German alpinism, their influence was still everywhere in society in general and in mountaineering in particular. Now to be very clear: I am certainly in total disagreement with such philosophies. Any serious alpinist will subscribe to the mantra "To summit is optional, getting down is mandatory", which also tells my feelings about the madness on Everest today, those rich idiots who climb it merely for the photo on top and the countries who prostitute "their" mountains for greed.

Der Vogelhändler: Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tirol
Fantastic and loads of respect to both of you guys. Magic climbing with the original means of keeping yourselves safe and equipment.
A good combo. Some long and leight weighted leader climbs first secured by some heavier really strong guy. The leader is not quite as strong but knows a lot about knots and finding good anchors an tying ladders and gadgeds to overcome the weight difference and securing the climb for the belayer.
Máximum respect for this legends❤
Dieses " es muss gelingen" war und ist der falsche Ansatz ! Auch dass von Anfang an Uneinigkeit herrschte , so es wirklich so war , ist ein Unding. In einer Gruppe muss jeder gehört und akzeptiert werden.
The police man torturing poor people it is very dishearting and painful to see he is using power to torture people what a negative seen
"its 14 stone reasonable!! " ha ha legend....you know its proper old school and classic when its starts with the pair of em riding around the lakes on a motorbike and no helmets.. just brilliant.
so much faith in the hip belay
An unpretentious example of winging it.
According to his sums, it was 580 porters, but they said 500.
Why are they beating the men??!
Neat to see Brian Hall when he was young.
Man looks like John Lennon.
How does 5 pounds a day (😂) equal 10,000??!
"im on me way"
Take in!
Totally amazing film of 2 absolute stars... climbing in days. " Best phone rescue services...."
Brilliant stuff. Don & Joe were only just being overtaken by the new generation of climbers when I started out but they were, and still are revered as legends. Even back then we were in awe of the sheer balls required to do some of their first ascents. Christ, I couldn't follow most of them a decade later. There's so many Whillans stories but my favourite is when he was climbing the Etive slabs - notorious for their lack of protection. Whillans got so far and realising he was heading for a very unpleasant, sandpapering slide, chose to turn around and RUN down the slab! What a man.
I'm going to have to say it: They don't make 'em like that anymore.
Excellent documentary,climbing legends everywhere
You know what the difference between English climbers of that time and USSR climbers??? USSR climbers was 18-27age and England climbers 45+.....you know why?, because only 1 percentage in USSR takes narcotics, and other Europeans and britishes young persons was hippie, they change climbing to narcos live!. That's why old school was climbing on the greasy rocks
"Take in" 😂
Not knowing anything about climbing or safety like nowadays imagine having to guess everything to what would work and bodging everything to not die or be serious injured is what make people legends and pioneers of the sport just insane to really think of it .
Thanks
I’m shocked any of the pre-modern British climbers survived more than a few years. They’d say it’s poor form to fall and they’re right! Very skilled indeed! 😂 No wonder they love using two ropes, Thank You for posting this!
Likes sind gekauft! 👎👎👎
Danke
Dabke
Watching this Movie. Dankeschön fürs tip
It maybe special Intimidating "movie"😂 for USSR climbers))). As if: look! We have fat uncles without equipment, they climb a multipitch)))) in USSR some of guy's look from Everest and just want to give hands for all climbers who coming up at the same time)
