My mom grew up in a family with little to no money and shared the house with a lot of siblings. Her father would buy m&ms, separate them by color, put each color in a fancy jar, and label it properly with their respective "medical properties", such as "Painkillers" for red ones and "Sleep pills" for blue ones. I grew up listening my mom insist on how effective those "pills" were, and laughing at her. Now, decades later, Mr. Huberman teaches me on the effects of color, labels and beliefs on placebo, and I find myself thinking: "My grandpa was a true genius. Made medicine out of sugar, and healed his family despite having little to no money at all." - Thank you Andrew! You make me humbler every day.

    Hi Andrew
I was a heavy drinker and addicted to seroquel. Since watching your podcasts I haven't touched any in 3 months. Amazing don't even feel like it. A big Thank you to you my life is really changing. I can't thank you enough

    • @McCarthy1776

I don't even know why they prescribe that demonic drugs. I can't see how anyone can actually function on seroquel.
I had severe insomnia and no sleep meds were working. And the doc gave me a moderate dose of seroquel and I always set 5 alarms for work in the morning. I slept through all 5. I woke up and saw sunlight after sleeping 13 hours and said "oh shit" and called my boss and told him what happened. Then I rushed getting ready, heart pounding, ran outside. Ran down the stairs adrenaline rush and everything. Got in my truck turned it on. And then the next thing I remember is waking up with someone knocking on my window still in the parking lot. I went from a full on sprint, with adrenaline pumping, terrified of getting fired to passed out cold asleep after already sleeping 13 hours. Then slept another 6 hours in my truck with it running.

Sorry for my English, I had severe Anhedonia after I quit my job. The job caused my mental breakdown and I had no other option but to resign. I couldn't sleep at night and it worsened my mental state. The ability to not fall asleep is like torture. You feel like screaming and going mad. It caused me to become paranoid and I thought I was becoming schizophrenic. I had no feeling or any emotions. It's like my soul died inside. No feeling, no pleasure. Only thing i felt was extreme agitation and that's when I decided to put on my running shoes and I ran 5km. It didn't really improve my mood but i consistently jogged every day and I gradually got my feeling back. I believe the sun exposure played a massive part in my healing. First thing every morning i went to the beach and swam in cold water. That brought me back to life. Why? Because it fixed my sleep. I believe the most important thing when depressed is to fix your sleep and daily sunlight, cold exposure, cardio exercises like running, hiking or breathing exercises does improve your sleep rapidly and that's the road to recovery right there. I highly recommend Wim Hof ,David Goggins, Alan Watts and Dr Hubberman if you feel paranoid or depressed.

Good for you, glad you’re doing better! I heard people say that when you’re feeling mentally numb, do things that will force you to feel things externally. So like you said, cold water exposure, sunlight exposure, running and activities that will connect the mind to the body. I think a lot of people don’t do this because we’re told when you’re stressed you’re dealing with mental problems.
Of course, the mental work needs to be done but can’t forget how much physical work matters too

My sister in law has MS and has just had it confirmed that she has moved to the progressive form of the disease. It's so hard to see her feel so hopeless (and my brother). I have tried to research but as a lay person it is so difficult to know which is the trust worthy information. We are in the uk and although we are so lucky to have the NHS they can't offer or recommend the wide range of treatments that are available privately and around the world. it would be beyond amazing if you felt that an episode on this condition might be of interest to more of your audience.
I completely understand you must get inundated with requests, but I'm feeling a little useless too so thought it was worth a try.
    Thank you

Beliefs, expectations, mindset.... I heard the word subconscious mentioned once. Core beliefs passed thru centuries and from our environment can be deeply rooted, and yet can be discovered and modified, eliminated or replaced with something positive. What are the limits of the mind? Meditation, mindfulness, affirmations... Possibilities are many and great. Thanks for the video. All the best.

00:28 💊 Placebo, nocebo, and belief effects influence biology and psychology independently of physical or chemical properties of treatments.
01:23 🧠 Neural circuits in the brain modulate biological functions such as heart rate and blood pressure in response to expectations.
02:33 🩺 Placebo, nocebo, and belief effects can be harnessed as unique treatments for various diseases alongside traditional approaches.
07:29 🔬 Placebo effects are distinct from nocebo effects and belief effects, each with unique impacts on symptoms and performance.
09:26 🧠 The prefrontal cortex plays a key role in placebo, nocebo, and belief effects by modulating neural circuits that control physiological functions.
13:49 🧪 Placebo, nocebo, and belief effects rely on information and experiences shaping expectations, leading to physiological changes in the brain and body.
19:52 💡 Expectation strength varies across individuals and impacts the magnitude of placebo effects, highlighting the importance of placebo controls in clinical trials.
20:06 🧠 The placebo effect measures the expectation of a drug's effects in a trial, illustrating the impact of belief on outcomes.
21:30 🩸 Placebo effects show high specificity based on what individuals believe about a treatment, even impacting hormone levels.
23:31 💉 A placebo injection, even of saline, can lead to hormone changes based on prior knowledge or expectation of treatment.
31:48 🛎 Classical conditioning demonstrates how unrelated stimuli, like a bell, can trigger physiological responses like insulin release.
34:36 💊 Expectations about treatment quality, packaging, and color significantly impact the placebo effect.
39:15 🏥 The placebo effect is stronger with more invasive or complex treatments, showing the brain's association of complexity with larger outcomes.
40:37 🩸 Expectations, not just psychological, have real biological effects through specific brain circuitry.
41:06 🩸 Placebo effects have limitations, such as in cancer treatment, where they alleviate symptoms but do not shrink or eliminate tumors.
45:00 🎩 Placebo effects, while powerful, are specific and cannot completely eliminate conditions like asthma or cancer.
49:09 💡 Belief systems significantly shape how drugs, supplements, and behavioral protocols affect physiology and brain function.
53:01 🧠 Placebo effects scale with the degree of expectation one has, influencing outcomes even with the same dosage of a substance.
57:01 🍔 Beliefs about the calorie content and indulgence of food impact hormonal responses, affecting feelings of satiety and hunger regulation.
01:01:02 🏋‍♂ Beliefs and mindsets can also impact exercise outcomes, suggesting a significant interplay between psychology and physiology.
01:02:39 🏥 Simply believing that daily activities, like work, mimic exercise can lead to improvements in health metrics such as blood pressure and body weight.
01:05:23 🧠 While thoughts from the prefrontal cortex may not directly impact muscle growth, they can affect basic bodily functions like stress response through neural pathways.
01:06:06 🐀 A study on rats demonstrates a pathway from the prefrontal cortex to the hypothalamus, controlling stress responses, which has implications for understanding psychosomatic effects in humans.
01:10:06 💡 The placebo effect, influenced by genetics like the CT Gene, varies among individuals, showing different levels of response to placebo conditions.
01:12:21 🧬 Genetic variations, such as the CT Gene, correlate with differences in placebo response, indicating a biological basis for individual susceptibility to the placebo effect.

Hey I’ve got some really great news to share with you, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on a cross and resurrected on the third day so you may all have eternal life. If you believe and repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Him as you would a parachute jumping off a plane at 25000 feet up in the air, He will give you eternal life in heaven as a free gift and I promise you, He will change your life forever as He did mine. He is the ONLY way to heaven and He loves you all. Please think deeply about this with urgency because this is your eternal life and soul, you don’t know when you could die, meaning you could die at any moment, so please consider this with all your heart. If anyone tells you that Jesus isn’t the only way, they are lying to you and they don’t care about your future.

Greetings! German teacher with MS here. I love your content, and I'm able to use so much of your teaching into professional development sessions for teachers. My last presentation integrated your research /analysis of neuroplasticity and mindset effects. Life-changing information for students and teachers alike, and I always direct my audience to you and Dr. Crum.
You mentioned you had never seen The Matrix. Um... You absolutely have to see this movie -- for a lot of reasons -- but its dive into mindset effects goes along with everything you've been saying. "The mind makes it real" is one of my favorite moments of the movie, and there are so many moments that speak to the power of the mind and of belief systems. It's worth a deep dive on its own. I promise.

I work as a medical interpreter in Australia. Years ago I had a patient who came to ED due to heart issues and high blood pressure. He was going to undergo an emergency open heart surgery. He was so nervous about dying on surgery table that his blood pressure couldn’t be controlled by medicine through the drip very 15 minutes. His daughters came to see him before the surgery, they told him to pray as their family believes in God. The two daughters held his hands and prayed for a few minutes, his blood pressure came down and stabilised. Today’s podcast clearly explained why and how belief can have placebo effect.

This is the BEST Andrew! It is the acknowledgement of the Science of ENERGY before the Science of MATTER. Reality is created with ENERGY. We wield energy with our MIND. Energy is contagious, the more powerful energy, the contagion. Disconnecting from the cage of thoughts (law of man and its common "sense" - i.e. FEAR) FREES the mind to be in CONTROL instead of the AUTOMATION that's been conditioned.

If anyone tells you that Jesus isn’t the only way, they are lying to you and they don’t care about your future

@@JORMUNGANDReyeS Totally, fear is the emotion that engages the imagination. It is based on assumed beliefs and their projection in the hippocampus (as Dr. Huberman so skillfully pointed out). Problem is they cloud our connection to the power of now. When it comes to true freedom, the only one we really have is what we choose to think, and even that can be a struggle.
BTW, Yes, I should’ve taken out the word “brothers” As this was a quote from Philippians 4:8, ESV. But it’s the same concept as Zen in Buddhism, or the watercourse in Taoist practices, which naturally applies to all humans regardless of sex :-)

In Short: Belief can literally change your brain...
Notes: This is an outlier huberman podcast, as it is concise and to the point. I kind of enjoyed this style for a niche podcast like this--when these are 2+ hours it can be a bit too much. A nice mention of a handful of past podcasts (Lembke and Ali Krumb) who talk a bit about mindset and belief, and with some nice mentioning of a handful of studies. There was a little mechanism throughout, but not really necessary to just reiterate the point that placebo, which is just believing something will happen, actually causes physiological and neurological changes to happen. This idea kind of blows my mind, and having an entire podcast where that is just stated a dozen or so times, as it is here, was really nice and well done. A good niche podcast!

Only words suffice to make us fascinated by all this information. I can only imagine taking the narration of the most popular episodes of the Huberman podcast as a backbone to create a series of documentaries about how humans works. Adding images and animations in a minimalistic way, prioritizing the original narration over flashy HD scenes and useless special effects stuff. That could be very popular. We have this impression that everything has been done but we never get enough of this kind of quality documentaries like they used to make.

I used tDCS for a few years with great results (depression/addiction) and later read a paper that suggested tDCS itself WAS generating the placebo response. This fascinated me because if you can deliberately facilitate the placebo effect the limitations could just be material? i.e. You can reverse depression but not repair a broken bone.
I am also amazed at how many people think the placebo effect is so common that the positive results of taking something like Vit D or any new supplement "may just be placebo" as if it is MORE likely to be the case when the double blind studies show that only a small percentage of people show clinical results when given a placebo.

I used to play music at work for people with Parkinson's - they can dance and forget all about it with a song they like. I taught a 15 year old boy with severe autism how to play a video game, and win every time. His dad was sure he just bashed the keyboard without purpose - so far he'd trashed every computer. Then I covered all the keys except for the arrow key. Immediately he realised the connection between the key and the screen. Bit by bit I uncovered more keys and he practically taught himself to play. Another time, I hooked up a camera to a wall-sized screen and let him take photos of himself. He was so happy to see himself on screen after each shot. They were the happiest photos his father had ever seen of him. Then I cared for a man in my street with BGDD. After three years, he lost all movement and speech. But I could make him laugh even when he couldn't talk anymore. I knew when he needed toileting and could hoist him out of bed alone (four nurses at the hospital couldn't do it - his whole bed used to be wet). I have so many stories from 20 years experience but I'm nobody you've ever heard of

Surprised that you didn't include the research on placebo/sham surgery. Fascinating & surprising work has been published for over a decade on the success of sham knee surgery. And at least 6 years of published research on success in sham spinal surgery.
The brain is powerful & capable of so very much

I haven't done any research on my own, beyond listening to this podcast. However, as a young 22 year old male with schizoaffective d/o, I've found that I have this weird mental ability, "mind over matter." It has worked very similarly as the placebo affect, however it's very delicate, and the moment I consciously or subconsciously discover any doubt, the trick loses all effect. I'm primitive with the ability, I can convince myself right now that if I chug a water bottle, it doesn't hydrate me and actually dehydrates me, but if I sip or drink it slowly, it hydrates me. However, I'm a cigarette smoker, and I've encountered a weird problem with my habit. I've had my share of personal issues, been on and off working hourly jobs, when I've worked a full day and make it to the end of a shift, I'm more likely to enjoy one cigarette fully. But when I haven't been working, or haven't done anything productive throughout the day, I'm way more likely to find myself chain smoking, as one cigarette gives me way less of that "relief" feeling. I've found myself in a carrot and stick lifestyle, where I know that if I don't accomplish anything during my day, and stay in bed enjoying videogames or shows, I'll end up paying the consequence later in the day when I have no dopamine to work off of. So, I've found myself, unemployed, starting each day off by asking, "what can I do today, even if it's just research into my mental and physical conditions." But then, I end up in the same place, whether I'm working a job or just knocking out some self-made to-do list, feeling like it's too much to handle, and even if I wanted to pause, break it up, slow myself down, I can't, because I'm too far in. Being human is complicated, man.

@@jackm.1628 the one I’m thinking of is “Understand and Improve Memory” - which I’m *fairly* sure addresses spacing effects, etc. He also has at least two other episodes on learning, though one is much more focused on motor learning… but many of the same principles apply. I can’t recall him talking about mind maps, but (as a long-time mind-mapper) I would also like to see him go down that rabbit hole.

"Exploring the Robust Link between Hypnosis and Placebo Effects:
One paramount inquiry arises: Can we discern a sturdy correlation between the effects of hypnosis and the placebo effect?
Additionally, a pivotal aspect yet to be fully elucidated pertains to the strategic alteration of mindset or belief systems to optimize the benefits of the placebo effect. Mere acknowledgment of non-established scientific effects without thorough research may inadvertently reinforce uncertainty rather than maximise the desired outcomes.
Thus, how can we methodically adjust our mindset, within the realms of scientific inquiry, to achieve the most favourable outcomes?
I would like to conclude my comment by conveying my heartfelt appreciation for the remarkable dedication you have shown towards advancing public education. Your invaluable efforts are truly commendable and deeply cherished

I love your work - please consider interviewing Dr Stephen Porges. His work on Polyvagal Theory helped me understand my daughters Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (including POTS and a whole host of other symptoms). She recovered once we found people who knew how to work with this - it wasn't the medical system.... Dr Porges describes the nervous system as the intervening variable, often not considered in science and medicine. I am sure it would be a great episode.

Hey Huberman, I just wanted to express how much I love your videos. Since day one, I've been a fan and have watched every single episode.
I've got a suggestion for a topic that I think would be super helpful and interesting for many of us: emotional stability. After all, it's something we all struggle with at times. Why do we feel all over the place sometimes, and more importantly, what can we do about it? It would be amazing to have a science-based view of it and methods to improve ourselves.
Thank you for the awesome work, and I'm looking forward to whatever you've got coming up next." 🇧🇷❤
