Will it Run? Episode 19: 1957 Plymouth Plaza! Part 1 of 3

  • Hey, we're back!
    Welcome back to our show about buying junk cars and getting them to run just for the hell of it. The budget is zero, as usual, and the cars just keep getting worse, haha.
    This time we dug up a 1957 Plymouth Plaza 4 door sedan out of a local junkyard and thought we'd see what it would take to get it going for a drive around the yard. This beauty was scrapped in about 1968 after someone presumably couldn't get it to go anymore. It is in terrible condition, but almost everything is just the way it was when it was shut off way back when Nixon took office and the Stones released "Sympathy for the Devil". There were even parking tickets in the glove box and gum wrappers in the ashtray!
    Well, let's see if we can get it to putt around again; she's definitely seen way better days, but maybe it'll come back to life to take Stella for a ride!
    Thanks again to everyone for watching and subscribing! Cheers from all the Agents here at CWMC!
    Well, we kinda blew the budget again... A timing chain and plugs pushed the repair bill close to a hundred bucks! Damn!
    PS: Mr. Lee Perreault, your parking ticket is 47 years overdue...

      If my memory serves me right, christine had the "golden commando" 350 with dual quads. Also rare fact known is that christine had a voiceover in the movie, they actually used a ford mustang 1970 429 scj for her exhaust sound.

    I would do a book style christine on this car since she was a four door in the book. Beautiful looking cars. They aged very well for their looks. Looking forward to if there would be a build on this car. Always been a fan of 50s to early 70s cars. Way better style then these cookie cutter now a days.

    The backfiring through the carb was because it's way out of time. Hear how hard it was to crank? Yep, another symptom of it being out of time. Loosen the distributor and turn it until you can fire it up. Also a bad idea to try to fire it up with a dirty carb and stale gas. Stale gas will stick the valves. Anyway, I really want one of these 230 flathead 6 engines. I've heard one run in person and they are very quiet and smooth. A hell of a lot quieter than the Chevy 235 of the same time. They don't have any rocker arm noise because they're a flathead. Also love how much room there is between the finder wells because most 57 and 58 Plymouths came with the 318 v8 which was wide so when you got a 6, there's a bunch of room because the engine compartment is made for a wide v8. Pretty cool. A 58 Plymouth Plaza Silver Special is my dream car. I'll get one some day. A 318 or a 230, either way I'm happy. I can only dream......

    i often think with all your old parts cars, after they're stripped, just drop a small block in, paint it and sell it just as a cruiser. Like a resto mod type deal, in that you just throw in any old seats and interior, not a period correct full restoration (not that you guys really do that :) , just using junkyard parts. just an easy way to make a buck and get rid of the old parts car shells.

    First big question I'm going to ask you, that car seriously had spark you guys did not touch the distributor at all and it cranks and came to life first try meaning it turned over??
    If all what I just said is true that kind of sucks considering all the problems in the number 5 cylinder.

    • @coldwarmotors
      @coldwarmotors  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      redneckbryon Yeah, it really had spark, but the plug wires were all on backwards and the chain was so sloppy it was never going to start without a bunch of messing around. The carb needed a rebuild too, and even then it just barely starts because of the poor compression in the back couple cylinders...

    It's depressing to imagine that in twenty to forty more years, these classics are going to become "locked". Only remains will be those bought by collectors, restored by rich folk or salvaged and stored on lots like Coldwarmotor's. The sad reality is the rest of us, will have to hope junkyards keep their models for another age or so. I always wanted a 1956 Chrysler Widsor. Interesting looking oldie.

      Hi Florida79If you love Chryslers from 1956, I have to tell you a story.Last year I was cruising in the USA in a 63 Impala, that I bought just for travelling with my with my family in the USA. I love vintage cars, it is my absolute passion. In Oregon I ran into an incredible car parked beside the road: A 1956 New Yorker with a hemi and a nice interior.The car looks clean, nearly rustfree, original paint, a lot of patina and it seems roadworthy. It was and might still be for sale for the sum of 4000$. Unfortunately I did not meet the seller, a man who ran a Jeep Garage and has retired. A while later I could contact him by phone. He told me the car was still for sale. But sadly he did not answer my email. But if you are really interested in the car, I will give you his phone number.I was so temped in buying this vehicle and having it shipped to my home in Switzerland. But I own 5 vintage cars and I cannot afford an other one.
