    You people that do these DIY projects have given me confidence to work on my own stuff. I subscribe to TH-cam University lol. I have saved myself many dollars in the past few months in lawn equipment repair and maintenance by applying simple techniques for problem solving I learned from you and others. Thank you for what you do Ben.

    Good to know the Merc went to a new owner for the next phase of it's life. I hope he'll take it from a driver back to former glory whilst driving it around. Old cars need to be seen to be appreciated!

    I've been fascinated by your videos and watching you in action. You are a craftsman, a talent that few professional mechanics possess. I may not completely agree with everything you do but after working with other mechanics for 47 years (and counting) I've learned that no two mechanics will approach a job the same way; and either way is actually correct because the end goal is achieved. Thanks for posting.

    I don't know if you are aware, but you can take the old radiator to a radiator shop and have it re-cored back to like a new one. The only change would be the part that holds water and mount it back just like you took it out. I know it is available in Garland , suburban Dallas, so with you being in Texas you most likely have it too.

    I hope the new buyer will go ahead and leave the original engine in the car. It looks like to me that you have sorted out most of the issues with it and for the amount of driving that he's probably going to be doing with the car there's no reason to get wild and crazy putting a whole different Block in it. He'd be much better off saving his money for new interior and a new windshield, ha!

    • @stephengent9974

      I guess it depends on what his aim is. Keep the period look with modern convenience and reliability from a newer engine, plus ease of getting parts, or try to stay stock as possible. I think I would want better brakes, better trans, more power and reliability, plus the period look. Each to their own

    Glad to see you're not ending this series on an unlucky number! It's great to see one last video, and that you found a buyer that's a fan of the channel. Be sure to remind him not to drive the car on salty roads, there's a good reason there aren't many rust-free ones in Indiana anymore! Also, be sure to say hi to your chickens for me, I always love to see me some babies.

    I guess there are not to many radiator shops out there anymore that can re core a damaged radiator. My older brother went to school with a kid who's dad run a radiator shop and would unsolder the tanks and replace damaged core tubes and fins. He would if the core was rotted rebuild the entire radiator using the original top and bottom tanks and their still in business after about 70 years.

    Goodbye old drivetrain. Sad -in a way, but Hopefully, if this car sits the same and essentially starts,steers stops well with the new-fangled modern gear then it does make the car more practical/reliable (I SUPPOSE...) Still, Very much enjoyed this series.

    What engine is in your Merc is it the 383 or a 430, My uncle had a 1958 Turnpike cruser with a 430 super marauder he always bragged about how it would leave every thing on the road in his dust!

    Did you keep the old radiator so it can be recored?

  • @OldCarAlley
    @OldCarAlley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have never had luck fitting aftermarket radiators into older cars, and often just have the radiator recored, so they fit correctly and look better. It's usually around the same cost... sometimes cheaper. Was it the camera angle, or did the original carburetor have a piece broken out of the throttle body? If that was a missing chunk, it will cause a vacuum leak. Engine sounded much better. I hope the new owner keeps the original drivetrain in it, thats part of the coolness of that era car. Newer engines are everywhere and just plain boring! I see people that build nice street rods are going back the the era of cool old school "older engines".
    Did you ever replace the worn out control arm bushings? It would drive much better with new ones. Guess thats a job for the new owner, If you didn't replace them.
    Looking forward to seeing the Olds running.
    Have you done any more to your 56 Cadillac?

    • @TheCorvetteBen
      @TheCorvetteBen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was quoted $500 for a record. "Copper is expensive" was the reason I got. This rad was $200.

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WOOOOW thats a big difference. It cost me $500 to have the radiator recored for the Catalina... and I paid $125 for it used, so yea I had $625 into a radiator, so $200 is a super deal!
