And a really great way to make interesting props for Halloween, also making forms for vacuum forming.
One can use it to make designs and make interesting custom silicone facial appliques.
This opens up more interesting possibilities for cosplay and props.

  • @AntonGudenus
    @AntonGudenus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

There is a very important distinction between passive photogrammetry (calculating the 3D mesh from video or photos while the scanner itself doesn't emit any light; Meshroom uses this system), structured light systems (face-id and the like) and time of flight systems (LIDAR).
Passive photogrammetry (or videogrammetry) has no real range limitations (you could 3D scan a mountain using photogrammetry), it very much relies on a well calibrated camera, needs either multiple photos from different angles while the subject doesn't move and greatly benefits from uniform lighting. It also needs quite the amount of processing power and RAM for large projects as the 3d model gets calculated by image matching alone.
Structured light systems on the other hand have a strong range limitation, as the projected mesh/points need to be clearly visible, in focus and well spaced. These systems work best with little to no light except for the scanner itself. They need a clearly calibrated projector and camera and can calculate basic 3D information from a single angle and need a lot less processing power.
TOF systems scan the object with laser beam to measure how long time it needs to get reflected. They have a minimum and maximum range and generally are rather expensive. The big advantage is that they are able to output a highly accurate point-cloud without any post processing.
So maybe you should try the full body scan in a dark room again, as unintuitive as that sounds.

One advantage of EM3D over Trnio is that EM3D scans are automatically to scale, whereas photogrammetry has to be resized. So, you'll probably want to start with EM3D, so you have a model to scale the Trnio scan to.

Benni, thanks for making such an easily viewable, easy to follow intro video that covers all important points - and shows the value of two methods eg infrared vs photogrammetry. i am not good at three-d modelling and was trying to stich together a "front" and "back" image of a product i need to make for a film - your video has helped me see the light - this is so cool. I will now set up my DSLR and put my real-world object on a turn-table dais and lock off my camera with a tripod - I'll film video and then just have Adobe whatever turn my video into an image sequence for meshroom - bravo! thanks so much from Toronto, Canada! I will buy your book!

If you have an old xbox kinect or kinect one kicking around in a box somewhere those can be used for 3d scanning too, there is free software and paid for them to do this.
I set my original kinect on a tripod, turned about in front of it and the model+texture for my head is good enough to use for an avatar in vrchat, doing a self full body scan was beyond this method, should work if you have someone else to move the kinect around tho.

This is really cool. I live in the US, and I make gun holsters as a hobby. I do need 3d molds of various types of handguns tho. And those could be quite expensive. I have a 3d printer, and if I can make a 3d scan of my actual handguns, I could maybe try to make it into an stl file and 3d print it. That way it'll also be cheaper. For my specific handguns they also don't make molds. So I would have to have someone custom make them for me. I'll see if this works. Great video!

I also tried a bunch of different methods. I bought a fancy new Iphone with LIDAR thinking it would help here, but it turns out the that front facing camera is actually much better at details than the lidar (that is more for room distance scanning). This was an unpleasant surprise since I paid so much for the new phone =(. In the end, I surprisingly had the best results using meshroom with no fancy sensors!! For my project, I wanted to create the sewing patterns for a chair where I had hand shaped upholstery foam. It was nice being able to UV unwarp and try a bunch of different patterns out!

This is super helpful, but only to people who have an iPhone unfortunately, i cannot find an alternative on the Android system for the scanning version, sure taking pictures and putting them into a pc program would be an option, but not into your phone, there is no good alternative for that either. I just think it would have been nice to mention, that is really only an option if you have an iPhone and that there is no alternative for android phone users

if you are relay interested in doing you scans at home i recommend one of the newer iPad. they have the same camera as the iPhone only that ists front facing and can do all that better

Hi. to merge the meshes use a program called cloudcompare.
it has point cloud stitching and matching tools. there are tutorials to import and make a few clicks and it will try and auto align.

For 3D scan of my own head, I might apply a bald cap first, so I don't have any big lumps where my hair is. But another good feature of having a life sized 3D print of your head made is cost- no disrespect to traditional special FX makeup artists who do life casting, but it's very costly to get a traditional life cast made. A skilled artist who knows what they're doing and can do lifecasting safely is worth every penny, but may be well beyond the means of a lot of cosplayers. I've been quoted over $1000 CDN for a lifecast, and $200-something for a 3D print.

I have been in 3d printing for 8 years. and I can tell you the best tool for 3d printing that you can use, is the Xbox connect. look into it and you will be so happy, is so simple just scan and you will see the 3d on your program don't forget to delete the background then transfer the image to cura then slice and print, and your all done. it works just like the 7.000 $ scanners
