I’m in Z5a, WI and I need to start a small rock garden for some hens n chicks that keep getting grown over. I have sand and a difficult time getting rid of a sedum called stonecrop or was sold as ‘Steppables’. They were here when we moved in along with purple morning glories and both are ridiculous to get rid of. I found the description of stonecrop and it did say it ‘Loves’ sandy soil-Ugh! One little snippet and it takes off. The plaintan hosta can be added to the list.
So be careful with those tiny sedums as they remind me of what I’m battling in the lawn. And I believe the lawnmower is helping spread it around.
It’s strange how flowers I’ve had for years all of a sudden are taking over. The astilbe is one of them and now I know why my FIL kept rocks around it and I’m sure clipped it back. The oak tree is supplying more shade and they are loving it. The Columbine also, but I’m sure that is easier to dig up than astilbe. Oh well, it should be a great show this July 4th! 😅
Was successful in foxgloves this year and I think they really like location and will reseed. Not sure how one got in flower garden next to veg garden, but may have to watch that as they are poisonous. The hollyhocks I never remembered rust and a friend in NJ is having an awful time and now I seen it on one of mine. This weather is like a rain forest.
We are in swealtering heat and humidity and surprised you are cool. And the mosquitoes arrived to make up for drought last year. They are really bad. 😂😂I just heard you say the mosquitoes are bad, but love all the rain-I’m So with you on that!
Nice tour, thank you! A lot of fun colors!

We've had a few sweltering days here too but then it rains and cools down again. Who wouldn't want an upper midwest winter and a south Louisiana summer? The best of both worlds! 🤣 All my astilbe and ligularia are living their best lives this year for sure. They really suffered from the drought for 3 years so I'm happy about it. I'm ready for a stretch of drier weather, though.
For the veg garden foxglove, as long as you don't eat the plant itself and keep the seeds out of any food you should be ok. I love how readily they reseed for me.
You're probably right about your lawnmower spreading bits of sedum around. The rooting groundcover varieties I have are Angelina and Six-Sided Sedum, neither of which have been a problem for me. They are also very shallow-rooted and are easy to dig up if I don't want them somewhere.
Thanks for watching! Hope your garden keeps growing well!

@@laurelrosegardens6454 tried to get some gardening in as things need staked before storms tomorrow and it poured 🙄-monsoon -like a rain forest. They say 2-5” more tomorrow. Here we go with mildew and fungus.

I like your creative solution for keeping the kitties away! So smart! Everything is looking so great! Question about your smoke tree/bush: how old is that beauty? I've been contemplating getting one for my front garden space & yours is sooo breathtaking! :D

I'm not exactly sure how long ago the previous owners put in the shrubs up front but they were all fully mature 7 years ago when we moved in. So probably at least 12 to 15 years old now? The smokebush gets super leggy and looks Dr. Seuss-ish if I don't trim it hard every spring but it sure is beautiful when it is kept in shape. And I love the multi-trunk form of it as well. Very architectural. It encroaches on the roof if I don't trim it, so give it lots of space if you put one in near any structures! 😊

I just found your channel, your garden is lovely!
I’m especially interested in shade gardening with hostas. Have you done a video where you name all of your hostas? Yours look so healthy and beautiful!

Thank you! I have named many of them in previous videos but haven't done a specific hosta garden tour. That's a good idea for a video! I'll have to dig out the tags for the ones I can't remember. 😊 We've had tons of rain this year so they are all looking really nice right now. It's fun to see how glorious they can be when they get abundant mousture! I should probably bait for slugs soon before they get all chewed up.

@@laurelrosegardens6454 A very wet and cool season here, too . I'm in SW Washington state. And have been baiting for slugs as well. Thank you for your channel and for sharing your lovely garden.😊
